Bon was the ultimate lyricist. He could turn a phrase, and his phrasing and delivery were perfect for AC/DC. The band's success was largely in part to heavy touring in the Bon days, and they were relatively unknown in the States in the mid 70s. Highway to Hell changed everything for them. It was the 1st record done without the Albert's production team, and was a much more polished effort for them. They played a lot of stateside festivals leading up to H2H, lower on the bill than the bigger acts of the days. And they often stole the show. Stripped down, no BS, no costumes....they just went out there and let their music and playing speak for them. Always a favorite for me, is the If You Want Blood live record, released right before H2H. Now there were some studio touch ups done to the recording, as was pretty standard for the live albums of the times, but it pretty much is a greatest hits set of the Bon days. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGHckKaVqtqJkLMsi=baKUNJFmCNkywHrO

I always say this - I grew up in Melbourne Australia as a teenager in the mid 1970’s and saw them so many times live with Bon. Probably 6times, whenever we could see them we would go, mainly at Festival Hall but even one time at Eastland Shopping centre in Ringwood on some promo show. Bon was THE man for me always! His voice, his charisma, his twinkle in his eye that let us girls know to not go backstage as he might have charmed one of us more than we wanted. I was devastated when he died, I was 19, and the thought of never hearing them all together again was terrible. I have never wanted to see them with Brian, for me, I saw the best. My sister has seen both and still prefers Bon! He wrote some great songs, including this one from memory, but I could be wrong. What a legend he will always be!!! Oh, and I have this album in the car at the moment and was blasting this very song this morning, rattling the windows!

Man, AC/DC at the time were incredibly famous in Australia, in fact they were the number one band in the land, no doubt… But as far as the United States were concerned, AC/DC weren’t even on the same level as any band in the states. They really were the biggest band in the world BUT the states just weren’t getting it at the time. It really took the United States 2-3 more years before they actually got what AC/DC were all about. In Australia, we were fricken rocking our minds out already. AC/DC are probably the worlds biggest band, and they are from Australia. I’m telling you that Australia 🇦🇺 has been producing some of the most successful and amazing bands since the 1960’s and you only have to delve deeper into the history of Australian music to discover what has been happening here 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘🦘👏👏👏👏👏👏

THe band was building huge steam with Bon at the helm, bro. Their last album with Bon- Highway To Hell, was very well recieved. So-- when he passed and Brian took oner for 1980's Back In Black, they were already on the verge of becoming huge. Being that bIB was a monster hit album for them, lots more fans got on the wagon at that point. I'm sure alot of them worked their way backwards with their catalog with Bo. My pref has always been the Bon SCott era-- his writing was so tongue in cheek and most always hysterical. If you want younger AC/DC--that would be the 70's era,guy-not the 80's. So--a bit confused by your bequest(?). If you want Brian era material-- watch some of their live concert dvds, where you'll see the immense crowd going crazy. In the meantime...the Bon era will always be the better era as the songs were always humerous lyrically. And I just prefer his voice to Brian's. Rock on, T

Well said. I'll take Bon every day of the week. No slight to Brian, but post Bon wasn't as interesting to me. They've been a great band throughout. The case could probably be made that had Bon lived, he wouldn't have survived world wide superstardom. But when you factor in Back in Black and how great it was, it kind of didn't even matter who was singing. They were gonna kick down the doors no matter what by that point.

I remember when Bon died, Ac/dc were on the cusp of hitting it huge with Highway to Hell album. AC/DC were getting big in the states when Bon died. Highway to hell was selling, then boom, Bon passed away. AC/DC decided to go on with the new Back In Black material that was ORIGINALLY written FOR Bon Scott, cuz when I listen to Back In Black I can hear Bon Scott singing those songs as good as Brian Johnson did. Brian Johnson came at the right time and the right place and no doubt put in his best performance during the Back In Black's production. The rest is history. It was a "Long wat to the Top" for Bon Scott, not so much for Brian Johnson. I still consider Brian Johnson "the new guy". He did a great job on Back In Black, but that should have been Bon's album. Timing is everything. Nothing since Back In Black has come near the quality of High Voltage, Dirty Deeds, Let There Be Rock, Powerage and Highway to Hell IMO.

DEFINITIVE ANSWER! Simply put America was not ready. While they were showing us exactly whothey are we were busy trying to be someone else. Trends and reputaions followed the populus and oftened justified it by demeaning those on other paths. Through the years we have come to appreciate a more of a time honored idealistic view. AC/DC started running the backroads of Australia playing in working class communities with the samee sound you hear at River Plate at which you will see every generation represening the era of AC/DC. How do I know? I was one of those on another path in 75' and a devoted fan of AC/DC . I hear you fans lol...the band started in 72' but wasnt released in the states until later ....AC/DC fans are sticklers for accuracy arent we? This, Angus's body action, anything you want to know about the band can be found through most every true fan like myself.

This album blew up in the states, it just didn't go on to be the 2nd highest selling album ever. I appreciate and enjoy Brian, but for me Bon is the man and the early stuff cannot be beat (as much as there are some amazing, massive bangers later on in their catalog).

When Brian Johnson came on board, I was happy that they could continue, but I missed Bon so much, that I couldn't really listen to them as much as before. My other favourite Bon Scott era songs: 'Let There Be Rock,' 'TNT,' 'High Voltage,' 'Jailbreak,' 'It's A Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'N' Roll).' You gotta understand... when AC/DC first came to America to tour in 1977, no one had heard of them - this misfit band from Australia w/ a crazy guitar player in a suit and shorts. Also, radio was playing disco music in America, while punk rock (later new wave) was dominating the UK and Europe in the late 70's... Even Van Halen could not break the European markets in 1978, despite having a 10 million-selling record in the USA... Rainbow was a band that was huge in Europe, but ignored in America during the disco era... Hard rock and heavy metal music was a grassroots genre that relied on touring because radio and TV would not give them a chance. After moving operations from their native Australia to England in 1977, AC/DC released 'Let there be rock' in Europe... and their touring had paid off there as it charted at #17 in the UK. They were desperate to tour America, so they booked some gigs... and Kiss hired AC/DC as a opening band, which gave them great exposure on tour as a live band. 'Let there be rock' made it to #154 on the US charts. Hoping for a bigger hit, AC/DC released 'Powerage' in 1978... the UK audience felt it lacked the vigor of 'Let there be rock' and it charted at #26... In America, radio stations refused to put 'Powerage' on the air, so AC/DC toured w/ the major bands and it paid off - 'Powerage' sold a quarter million copies in the US (#133 on the charts) without any major promotion. It was the first time that their American label realized that AC/DC had potential to be huge... In 1978, disco was becoming overkill and demand for hard rock music was rising by 1979 as new bands like Judas Priest, Scorpions, Van Halen, and AC/DC were gaining commercial ground. AC/DC were headlining in Europe and recorded their first live album in 1978, "If you want blood - You've got it". In 1979, AC/DC recorded 'Highway to Hell' enlisting a new producer 'Mutt' Lange... they also changed management to an American-based Leber-Krebs management (who handled Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Scorpions) and began touring the US and Europe heavily that year. Radio finally started playing AC/DC singles and 'Highway to Hell' charted at #17 in the US and #8 in the UK... it went gold (half million copies in the US) by the end of '79... The band and record label felt that AC/DC was going to break big on the next album, so Angus and Malcolm Young started working on songs in London in early 1980 as the band was taking a break... Tragically, Bon Scott unexpectedly died soon after and AC/DC's legions of fans from Australia to the USA were shocked. Announcing a new singer Brian Johnson, AC/DC announced early that the band would continue and completed the 'Back in Black' album to be dedicated to the spirit and memory of Bon Scott... The band knew that they couldn't recreate 'Highway to Hell' without Bon Scott, so they decided to take a different route w/ 'Back in Black' in 1980... But there was no guarantee that AC/DC would be received w/ a new vocalist. In the UK, AC/DC fans were eagerly waiting for 'Back in Black' and it went to #1 on the charts in Australia as well... But in the US, the fans were skeptical about an AC/DC without Bon Scott... So, AC/DC booked a huge American tour in 1980 and did all the promo and work needed to make people believe in the band again. Radio scored a hit single 'You shook me all night long' that year and as the tour ended the year... AC/DC's record sales began to climb until 'Back in Black' reached #4 on the US charts and sold 10 million copies going into 1981. The US label had declined to release a Bon Scott AC/DC record from 1976 - 'Dirty deeds done dirt cheap'... but once 'Back in Black' was a hit, the label released 'Dirty deeds done dirt cheap' in '81 and it ended up selling 6 million copies. None of that success would have been possible without the work done by Bon Scott for AC/DC during the 70's.

Think AC/DCs next album with Bon would have been huge , highway to Hell really pushed them into the big league and had Bon lived they would have hit super stardom with Bon . *Why the Bon Scott era didn't translate to the American market in the 1970s:* It's simple. AC/DC was initially signed to a small Australian label named Albert Productions Co from 1974-78. Albert Productions couldn't afford to advertise and promote in the pricier, more competitive US marketplace. AC/DC didn't renew their contract with Albert, and were eventually signed to the larger US label, Atlantic Records, in 1979. Also, Bon Scott's early death was such a headline internationally that it drove Americans unfamiliar with AC/DC to seek them out and learn more about this band. Bon's death in and of itself drove a lot of newfound interest that the Brian Johnson era was able to capitalize on. It wasn't so much that the US market didn't resonate with the Bon Scott era. It was mostly that they didn't know who they were in the first place due to their lack of promotion in the US by their small Australian label who couldn't afford to bankroll them, whereas Atlantic Records later would. 95%+ of AC/DC's 'Highway to Hell' album sales in America occurred after 1980; after 'Back In Black' exploded in America

AC-DC didn’t hit hard here in the states until the Highway To Hell album, Bon Scott’s last album before he died. I went to a huge party towards the end of 78 and the guy throwing that party put the album If You Want Blood on and just let it play over and over the whole night long. That was my invitation to the world of AC-DC. I was high as F… and that album blew me away. I couldn’t get enough of them. The If You Want Blood album was the only live album they recorded with Bon. I can’t tell you why they didn’t hit before the Highway To Hell album. Between Bon’s double entendres, straight out in your face sex lyrics, and snarling, very cool, original sounding voice, Malcom’s howling guitar riffs, the pounding drums and bass, and Angus’ screaming leads, it made no sense to me that they hadn’t taken the whole rock and roll world by storm long before the end of the 70’s. I was a drummer in a lot of local bands and we covered some AC-DC, but never could find a singer that could come close to Bon’s voice. I think I was late to the AC-DC party mostly because I was busy with my own bands. If I hadn’t gone to that party in 78, I may have missed the boat completely. The Bon era is really all I can handle. I was really crushed when Bon died and believe a good majority of the Back In Black album were Bon’s lyrics. After that album it was never even close to me. Thanks for a great reaction to some of the best hard rock from the 70’s!

This is what finally climaxed into them breaking through to being one of the biggest names in rock, dude !!! I'm confessing to be an AC/DC purist with Bon (never cared much for Brian, though i respect the man), but they had to work really hard (think "It's A Long Way To The Top") to get where they got. Bon was probably 75% of what made them keep getting bigger and better, especially because he was chief lyricist, even writing the lyrics to a ton of Back In Black, and when he died, people were completely primed for that album coming out. We wouldn't even be having this thing right now if it weren't for Bon. Most of us huge AC/DC fans and those of us who are die-hard old rock fans weren't even introduced to these guys in the states until the late 70s, and then Bon was gone. You wanna see the best ?! I believe the reason was Angus and Malcom's brother George, was their producer and he was trying to fire Bon for alcohol and drug use. The band as a whole said no. they hired Mutt Lange and fired their brother. Highway to Hell became the American breakout album.
@aaronmcmahon7462 Жыл бұрын
Atlantic records vetoed George and Harry, as they were considered too raw and the label wanted airplay in the US. They pushed Eddie Kramer on the group, and the sessions were disastrous. Eventually a compromise was made and Mutt Lange came on board and he pushed the band to new levels (he also does backing vocals, as he was an accomplished singer and he also helped Bon push his vocals on If You Want Blood).

Because ACDC was just catching on here and in fact pretty much on fire here just before and right at the time of Bons death. Like any band before that they were paying their dues hoping it would catch on BUT you see after his death the music and lyrics were just as great when they returned and Bon had already been with them to lay the ground work so the fire was already kindled and smoldering for Brian when he came on. I believe if they had been 2 different bands, one with Bon and the other with Brian starting at the same time it would have been a neck and neck race. I do like Bons voice better but I also think Brian can't perform Bons songs as well as Bon did and I don't think Bon could have performed Brians as he did. Just my 2 cents. I guess the short answer is ACDC with BOn had already broken through making it much easier for ACDC with Brian.

Pause date during the discussion about wondering why the Bon Scott era wasn't seemingly as impactful in United States compared to the Brian Johnson era. It's not all that complicated. They were a band out of Australia and they worked really really hard and they quickly became popular outside of Australia mostly through Europe but only a very select group of people in the United States knew about them. And in fact when I went to see them in 11th grade for the tour Highway to Hell which this song is from, and they looked pretty much exactly like in this video, I saw them in a small arena in Wichita Kansas, and it was one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen. But the way my friend brought it up to me was, hey man are you going to go see the Cheap Trick show? I liked Cheap Trick and in fact the very first band I was ever in had just formed and we were learning Dream Police by them, but I said, Rick Nielsen is a fantastic guitar player but I've got to pick and choose my shows and so I don't think I will make it. And my friend said yeah but you have to understand, there's this incredible hard-rocking band out of Australia that's popular all across Europe, and they're just starting to hit America. You've got to come see them as the opening band. I have to see them. And so I did, and it is one of the most amazing shows I've ever seen.

I saw Bon in 1988 and AC/DC was a band's band. I saw tons of bands from local bars in the audience. Ten rows from the stage and I met them in 2001!!! Malcolm remembered it!

As a high schooler when Bon passed away this is the ACDC I went through the best years of my life. Brian was a perfect singer to bring. It just works but the 70:s and the early 80's were a gift to those that grew up on ACDC.

Short answer to your question re 70s exposure is that in the USA radio airplay & charts were & are heavily manipulated by major labels with their own agendas. AC/DC essentially refused to roll over, this strategy of maintaining control of their brand paid off in the long run. 🤘☮🕊

The Bon Scott era had a lot of hits. BUT, I think I recognized him as hits because I was living in Germany at the time because my dad was stationed there. AC/DC was pretty big for us back then. I was only 11 years old but rocked all those Bon Scott era albums every night.

I was 13 in '77 saw them with UFO - they were bigger with Bon. MASSIVE. Brian's been there ALOT longer (10x at least) and he covers Bon's songs. Edit to add I'm American, saw themin in Madison WI Cheers

I can answer that for you as I was a teen then. It was because by the time AC/DC hit it big in the U.S., Bon died. Then his death made such big news, people who didn't listen to AC/DC started paying attention to this great band. By the time "Back in Black" came out, AC/DC had a whole bunch of new fans.

They were a big hit in ‘79 when this came out, but still rising. Remember AC DC had only been around for 4 years at that point. Was shocking when Bon Scott died. Nobody knew if they’d be back… but a year later Back in Black came out.

AC/DC fans know that Bon was the shit' but he and the band were Australian which Americans probably thought sounded a lil bit funny. Bruan Johnson was English which probably helped him get the appreciation that Bon didn't get from base. the American fan base.

Anything from the Apollo show will give you young Angus and it is glorious. He is like a caged animal. He is also mesmerizing during the Donnengton show,.

I was 13 in 1979. AC/DC was getting more radio air time. Videos were not yet a thing because MTV wasn't around yet. I think those were the differences between the early days and the later band. I certainly saw them at shows in the early 80s but was weened on early AC/DC playing their records.

Hi.. I'm a tru blu Aussie and I live in Rockingham Western Australia which is 20mins from where Bon Scott lived in Spearwood, and also not far from where they did the song Jailbreak.. they shot the video in the old Fremantle Prison.. the song Highway To Hell by the way is named after the Canning Hwy in Perth which is about 30mins away from me,they called it the Highway To Hell because the band had to travel up and down it to go to gigs.. Bon Scott's resting place is in Karrakatta Cemetery which is in Fremantle where they have a memorial statue of the great man. To answer your question about why they didn't make it big in the States until Back in Black is because AC/DC did tour in the US with The HighwayTo Hell tour but they mainly toured Australia with Bon Scott then England where he passed away.. I'm sure if Bon and AC/DC had of toured the US more while he was alive they would of been a smash. Anyway G'day and goodbye from Perth Western Australia the edge of the world

Engineering, and marketing. This was the first album with a big time studio producer. The sound was really a lot cleaner and their label got behind them because of it.

I saw both in concert. I remember that in the Bon Scott era...it just seemed to be harder to find them on the radio in mid Michigan. I remember buying the cassette of Highway to Hell. Then I could hear them all I wanted. I love both singers but I preferred Bon...just a touch too much. 😍😁

The reason Bon Scott didn't get the attention he deserves was because there was just too many big rock stars during the 1970s and 80s. Back then you had Bee Gees, Bruce Springsteen, Queen, Iron Maiden, Led Zepplin etc... So many legends

Well, Bon Scott was the original singer, but from a different band in Australia and he died. When he was 33 I think so. They needed a singer well. Bon Scott saw Bryan Johnson at a bar and his kit. Areas of the appendix burst. And he told the band if anything ever happened to him go find brian johnson , he would be their new singer
