That is a special song growing up during the war, being from a military family. One day I was talking to this man and Nam came up in the conversation. He said when he came back, he was spit on and had tomatoes thrown at him. It was sad to think about because most of the boots on the ground were drafted. This guy also told me every year he rides his Harley from California to the Wall in DC. He did it because every year there was this old man who stood on an overpass in the middle of the country and saluted the biker vets driving passed.

With this happening during the Vietnam war. Me as a Patriotic American who grew up in the 90s. Any time I see anyone wearing a Vietnam Veteran hat. I walk up, shake there hand, and fight back tears in my eyes. As I thank them for supporting their country in a War our Government forced us to join! So this song 8Th of November has always got to me. And your my very first reaction video im watching of it

Thank you so much, this is the first time I have ever heard anyone actually talk about Remembrance Day, I have heard it mentioned in passing, I respect all soldiers, even those that are not our allies, because they too, are simply humans, with families, just doing their duty.

On the 8th of November 1965, I had just turned 18 and was in Saigon waiting transportation to Bien Hoa and the 173rd. I was immediately rushed to their base where I discovered my MOS was changed and now I was an infantryman, a replacement for one that was killed. Although not trained as an infantryman, and never even seen a M16 (trained with M14) I served my entire tour with them. I will tell you, OJT is a hell of away to learn how to be an Infantryman. Hard to believe it was 58 years ago.

I turned 13 on the 8th of November 1965. Four short years later I was saying goodbye to my boyfriend as he was sent to Vietnam. He did come back and we did marry but he lived years with the horrors and disease from his time there. Sadly he is gone, from disease caused by the chemicals that were sprayed over the countryside.

Those men were treated so badly when they came home. They fought in the war but they still fight. I'm sure it's different for all of them. We have to start treating these Men and Women so much better. Some gave all. To the families who lost their love one's, I can't give you what you want the most. Only my heart felt respect.

Sad thing is, nearly two decades later. Also on the 8th of November. The 173rd Airborne, once again fell under a vicious attack only this time under the guns of the Taliban. It was during the battle, that a Paratrooper became one of the few living recipients of the Medal of Honor. Their legacy lives on even to this day. Thank you to those whom served, and those whom gave the ultimate sacrifice.

My husband was in the 101st Airborne 75th Ranger Regiment in Nam’ on the 8th of November 1965.. Thank God this wasn’t his Regiment. He doesn’t talk much about his time in Nam’. All he will say is he saw more action than he wanted. He did end up wounded in the upper leg . He received a Bronze Star for his heroism & a Purple Heart medal. He was 18 at the time, and while there was a draft back then, he had enlisted . He actually received his draft noticed while he was stationed in South Korea training the tiger division of South Korean Soldiers. His group consisted of 10 Rangers & 12 Green Beret. After the advisory training , the Airborne Army Rangers, the Green Berets & the South Korean Soldiers then went to South Vietnam. They went to South Vietnam to keep the Communist North Vietnamese from taking over. Australia, Turkey, France, South Korea & US fought together. It was a difficult & dangerous War because it was in the jungles of Nam’. Our country was the last to pull out of the war, after 58,500 casualties of our young brave men , President Johnson ordered our military out & the communist ended up taking over South Korea. God Bless every Soldier for all their sacrifices. This was a War that most Americans were against & this being in the hippie generation of “ make love, not war” their homecoming was met with animosity & disapproval by many of the young generation. My husband is now 76 & we have been married for 45 years . He may have snow on the roof top now & is a kind & gentle man, but at one time he was a bad a$$.

When John Rich goes high and Big Kenny goes low at the "Swallows it down with his tears", that line is extremely powerful as it is... but their contrast in pitch gives me chills every time I hear that line or any other line in this song where they do that pitch difference and it's noticeable.

I was there that day & night. There were two hills with a gap in-between. I was in B Coy. 1R.A.R. (Australian) 1 R.A.R. were tasked with the hill on the right. The Americans on the left. B Coy. was tasked to search the gap between the two hills A Coy was on our right & approaching the left hill. The had a major contact & we lost two (bodies not recovered until the late 2010/20. On word of the contact B Coy. was tasked to climb the hill from the rear & come down on the enemy. We got half way up the hill when we were call off. The Americans had walked into a Horseshoe Ambush. Two Companies up one behind. The VC had allowed them to get well inside the Fire Zone. Delta Coy, 1/503d if I remember. It was bad. The din was from the fire fight, day & night was tremendous. We were only 1000 yards away. The Australian Battalion 1 R.A.R. was re-tasked to provide Cordon. on the near side of the hill. The Ambush was on the reverse slope. B Coy took up its position in a Teak Forest. We switched to the American Radio frequency & listened first hand to the battle. Not recommended, but we did anyway. Security went out the window & plain language was used (As it was in the Battle of Long Tan) The Battle took place in a ravine & the Americans were in the bottom of the ravine with the VC in Bunkers higher up & firing down. Visibility in this thick Jungle was only about 10 yards. There was a lot of hand to hand bayonet fighting. The ground was strewn with football sized stones which made getting a foothold difficult & ricochets from rounds flying everywhere. During the night we heard an American call Artillery Fire in on his own position. He asked that only the Kiwi Battery fire. (Kiwi arty. is the best in the world & win the games every year) The Kiwi's had the Italian Howitzer, a high angle Weapon, as opposed to the American Gun. We heard him adjust fire by feet. It saved them. I know, 319 Battery denies this, but it's true. The Kiwi's fired 1000 Rounds that night. A side story. In our position in Cordon 5 Pl B Coy. had a herd of Elephants walk through position. We didn't see them but their footprints were there in the wet sand next morning. Kristofferson was a Chopper Pilot at the battle. This is a very, simple version of the battle. A more descriptive image is in the Book, "First to Fight." by Bob Breen. ISBN 0 04 320218 7. Library of Congress No# 88-71387.

That was the era I grew up in. My husband just missed the draft. He didn't pass the first physical and by the second one the lottery was in effect and his number was 269. The guys I was in college with talked to me of what they lived through and the pain of wounded and lost people. I hurt for them and the way the country turned its back on the Vietnam veterans. I protested the war but never the veterans for I felt the government didn't value them and used them for cannon fodder. This was the first I've heard this. Both my parents were WW2 vets. Thank you.

2 uncles were in Vietnam 1 Soldier, 1 Marine. I was born 2 weeks after this battle. One of my cherished possessions is a picture of 3 veterans. My uncle in the army just about to leave for Vietnam, My Marine uncle just arrived from there. In the middle 2 year old me. A future Navy Corpsman. (My war was Desert Storm). As for the song- the Book We were Soldier's Once and Young & the movie based on the book We Were Soldiers are definitely worth the time.

Thank you for doing this! I knew you would truly appreciate this song and this man's story. Specialist Lawrence Joel despite being shot twice in the leg defied orders to stay low and take cover. He hobbled his way with a make shift crutch and treated his men and the men from another company until his supplies ran out. He then used what make shift materials he could scrounge to treat more wounded, saving 13 lives. Specialist Randy Eickhoff ran ahead of him providing cover fire. He received a Silver Star for his actions and a Purple Heart along with Joel because he was wounded as well. This was one of the most tumultuous eras in American history. The reception that too many Vietnam Veterans received is one of the most appalling events that has ever occurred in this country. It was long before I was born and it has always made me furious and ashamed that any of my countrymen ever acted that way. Yes, there still is much debate about the justification of that war but that nothing to do with the men and women who were sent there. I think it's one of the reasons that we are almost hyper vigilant about thanking them for their service ever since that time. If you ever get to Arlington National Cement among many other memorials there one for Vietnam simply called The Wall. It contains over 58,000 names, including 2,500 that are still listed as MIA/POW. There are also two different statues that go along with it, one of which is dedicated to the nurses who served at aid stations, MUST units and EVAC hospitals. I know I've said it before but in my mind it can never be said enough.... Thank you for your service to your country and by proxy mine.

My grandfather told me one time that the hardest choice he had to make was to shoot a child. Upon examination the child did have a bomb implanted in his body. Cause the VC knew how kind our soldiers were to children. One of my dad's friends won't eat sweets cause of how it brings back memories of how he was being fed fellow POWs.

My husband came home from Vietnam and they were treated like the lowest of the low. The draft was in effect so it was not the choice of everyone that was there. Just today I heard “when were you in county” as he had come across another vet from that era. Thanks to agent orange we have lost so many. 50,000 Names on the Wall by George Jones and More Than a Name on a Wall by the Statler Brothers are excellent choices for Veterans Day aka Remembrance Day.

1st off, Thank you for your service! I know it wasn't here, but you still bravely fought! I hope you & your boys have a very special day!! 2nd. Thank you sooo much for playing this!!! I try to play it every 8th of November! Sometimes I sneak it in through the year. They remind me, that no matter what's going on in my life, that I shouldn't complain bcuz it could be worse! It just blows my mind when they say "He was 19 and green with a new M-16! It breaks my heart 💔!! I commend all of you! My grandpa was in the Navy. I cry everytime I hear this & the video don't help! I believe people need to know what it's like, even just a fraction!! Kris does mostly writing, but also sings. Big & Rich wrote it. I get teared up just knowing that guy gave Big Kenny that hat!! I think I told you b4 That they were known as the music Mafia!! They know about everybody in Country music & many other genres. Their song "Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy" is not just a good song, but the video is great! They know how to do it up right!! They also know how to bring it down and pay tribute to all the men & women who served! I could be wrong, I'll look it up, but I'm thinking one or more of them served. Yep Kris served. I thought that but wasn't sure. Big & Rich...Save a Horse (Official video)...Lost in This Moment...Fake ID (Song from the Footloose remake )...Coming to Your City...Holy Water...etc...🙂

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. The United States Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans-living or dead-but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. My dad was a WWII survivor and helped to coordinate a parade downtown every Nov. 11th where he also MCed. He also spoke at ceremonies held in our town's cemetery for every memorial day for the better part of 50 years.

This was one of the first songs i remember hearing that told a real story of a soldier, and i did a quick scroll through some of your other reactions, ill recomend a band that has a relation with Nightwish, the lead singer Floor is married to a drummer of a certain band called Sabaton, they are a power metal band from Sweden, the song i reccomend is called En livstid i krig Specifically live at Gothenburg, as a soldier i feel like you will appreciate it more then most, they do songs about different wars, battles, and specific soldiers, they also have a history channel that goes through and teaches the history about each song. As a last note, all rememberance type holidays are not about celebrating death, rather about celebrating those that lived and served, so dont feel bad if you ever look forward to one, treat it as a celebration that the great people lived, not a somber day to remind yourself they died. Stay safe brother, i appologize for the long comment.

Appreciate your reaction and appreciate your service! You deserve all the respect also! Thankful for all men and women who served and are currently serving! I cry because the soldiers were just boys barely young men and life at that time had not prepared them for the horrors they would endure. I still have my MIA bracelet from that war even though I wasn't old enough to comprehend what was going on. Thank you Craig!

Vietnam was a very controversial war. Even among the troops, themselves. American public had no ability to separate the war from the warrior. We didn't help by our actions or lack there of. We returned with memories we didn't leave home with. In the late 80s early 90's the tide turned for us. The VA opened street counseling centers. We didn't have to mess with the bureaucracy of the VA. Danny a good friend and wounded veteran himself pushed us to stand in the public eye. We didn't like it, but respected him to no end. He lead us out of the darkness we lived in, to the light of the public eye. We found ourselves being thanked for our service, the public standing between us and the still ignorant anti war people. Now I wear my Vietnam Vet hat all the time. People walk up and say "Thank you for your service." Young kids come up and say it as well. It still seems odd to me sometimes, because I didn't know what to say to that. Finally I came up with something I could live with. "I served because you are special and deserved my time." It sounds a bit over blown, but people seem to like it, so do kids. Even though most were not even born yet, it helps them remember vete4ans serving today are serving for the same reason.

Thank you for your service. Yes, Vietnam might still be controversial but like you said, the soldiers themselves deserve respect. Good song choice to react to.

I graduated high school in 1975, and one of my teachers was a bit "odd." He seemed to have no personality, and didn't have much of a sense of humor. Decades later I happened to see that teacher's obituary -- he'd been a World War II P.O.W., and took part in a "death march" that few U.S. soldiers survived. That taught me that I never know what others have gone through -- especially veterans. Great respect for this video of a veterans who can never forget what he's experienced.
