This is one of the great British female singers from the 60's. She had such a beautiful unique voice & covered many genres (blue-eyed soul, pop ,ballads, country, jazz). She had a lot of hits such as "I Only Want To Be With You", "I'll Try Anything", "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "Wishin' & Hopin' ", "The Look Of Love", "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" & many more.

Since you’re wearing a Led Zep t-shirt, you might like to know that John Paul Jones played bass and arranged on Dusty's late 60s London albums on the Phillips label. When Dusty recorded in Memphis for Atlantic she enthusiastically recommended the newly formed Led Zeppelin to the label bosses and they immediately signed them up. She was also influential in bringing the Motown sound to the UK. She loved the black soul sounds coming from Motown and became good friends with Martha Reeves among others. It was her idea to host a BBC Sound of Motown special on Ready, Steady, Go, which was the big UK pop programme in the mid 60s. She brought the Vandellas, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Temptations, Stevie Wonder and others, giving them their first big break in the UK and then Europe. She generously and tirelessly promoted these acts. Fun facts: Dusty did a duet of Mockingbird with Jimi Hendrix on one of her TV shows in the late 60s. Ian Gillan, legendary vocalist of Deep Purple, toured with Dusty in 65 and said she was the greatest female rock/pop vocalist he ever heard - she rocked!

Dusty is one of my all-time fave singers. She really could sing anything: Gospel, Folk, Jazzy material, Pop, R&B. Some favorite songs: No Stranger Am I, I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore. When you can, you should check out her album "Dusty In Memphis"; lots of great tracks there

"Windmills of Your Mind", "The Look of Love", and "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" are examples of her during her 1960s peak. You've heard her with the Pet Shop Boys, and she had one more collaboration (with Richard Carpenter in 1987) called "Something In Your Eyes", which is very reminiscent of some of the Carpenters songs (Richard was the composer, arranger, producer, pianist, and backup singer of the Carpenters before his sister's untimely death in 1983) and Dusty has a wonderful interpretation of the song, which was written for Karen Carpenter, but she died before laying down a vocal track.

Dusty: Jazzy, emotive, lyrical (also sultry but you didn't mention that) - "The Look of Love". Along similar lines to this one - "Tupelo Honey". Powerful - "I Just Don't Know what to Do with Myself" Rock - "Donnez Moi" Just fabulous - "The Windmills of Your Mind". Otherwise - anything you like. There's not a bad one in the bunch and it's a pretty big bunch. I'm looking forward to this.

I have always loved this song. It has such a timeless retro-cool feel to it. Dusty Springfield is definitely a legend, often overshadowed by the other British Invasion artists like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. I wish it were longer but Top 40 radio of the 60s wouldn't play a song longer than 3 minutes and even those at 3 min were testing the radio stations. It wasn't until the 70s and fm radio that stations began to play longer songs, although Top 40 stations held out for a while. "Son of a Preacher Man" has a kind of naughty irreverence about it that is so cool. This song has been in a lot of movies including Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" and he never includes a song unless it really resonates with a feel and mood to his story.

Dusty had a fantastic voice. The Look Of Love - highly recommend for you particularly in reply to what you asked us for from her. She thought it sounded too 'sultry' and was told she sounded perfect and to keep it that way. Pure velvet in that song. Yes, she could sing anything and do it well. You are correct in that she put all the emotion out there in her voice.

Hi, Sal, greetings from Georgia! I've enjoyed going down the rabbit hole of some of your music reaction videos tonight, from the Eurythmics to ending up here at Dusty Springfield. The opening track of her album "Dusty in Memphis" is a favorite of mine, called "Just a Little Lovin'." It basically says that if everybody would "get some" every morning, then the world would be a better place. 😏😈 Also, the ballad is in a waltz time signature, jazzy while soulful, and her voice gets more expressive throughout the song, especially near the end. And, the whole song is only a little over 2 minutes! Give it a listen; you won't regret it.

This is one of my all time favorite songs from the 60's. I've been on a bit of marathon tonight with you after youtube drew my attention to you. There is one thing that you do different than than ANY of the other music reviewers and that you read up a little on the song & artist before listening. I appreciate that SO VERY MUCH!!! Not disappointed yet! Oh and for the length of this song, remember that back then studio's insisted on that 2.5 minute song format!
