One good thing about being 72 is that I listened to big band and amazing artists like Ella because it's what my parents listened to. I saw the start and development of rock, new folk, Motown, metal, reggae, indie, punk, etc.

I grew up on Ella Fitzgerald because my mom played Ella, Harry Belafonte, and Dave Brubeck on the high-fi 33rpm record player (mono). Later in life as an adult I listened carefully and understood why her talent was huge. Johnny Carson had literally hundreds of world class singers on his show in the 30 years he was on. In the mid 1990s Ella Fitzgerald came on his show and sang. She was in her 70s. When he introduced Ella he said that in 25 years on his show, every singer that ever came his show rehearsed during the day before the show that night. He said there are many technicians who must set everything up like sound, lighting, props, etc. while the singer would sing, getting sound levels and camera angles for the show that night. He said that several hours before in the afternoon, while Ella was on the stage practicing, he saw for the first time in his life that when she started singing, everyone stopped what they were doing and just looked at her while she sang, mesmerized by her presence. These were people who were pros in the recording industry and had heard virtually every great singer in the world live. Ella had an effect on them that no one ever had.

I will listen to music from every genre from hip hop to opera and I admire a lot of artists but her voice is so beautiful it just blows my mind. I have a collection of her music and I probably listen to her more than any other artist, her and Sarah Vaughn, another one I consider a National Treasure. Both had incomparable voices and both were loved and respected worldwide for their supreme talent. Give a listen to Sarah Vaughn as well. She had a 4 octave range from bass to soprano and could have sung opera had she chosen to.

Thank goodness you've finally found Ella Fitzgerld. Ella was one of the greatest jazz singers ever. She had a very long career. She began singing with the Chick Webb Band at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem in 1935, and kept singing with bands and as a solo artist until 1990. After that her health declined precipitously due to the ravages of diabetes and she passed away in 1996, at the age of 79. I posted a link to her singing "Moonlight in Vermont" as a duet with Frank Sinatra in another video. Ella reached a turning point in her career where, ok she was a singer for Chick Webb and other swing bands, but swing was going out of style and Ella's struggled to find a style, until she just decided she would be an artist first and follow her muse. She fell in with the bebop movement and developed a style of singing and scatting in the bebop style, which was musically quite technical. She took the notion of using her voice as an instrument and ran with it. Then she flew with it.
