You NEED to go back and listen to the words carefully. The story is not true, but it is a conglomeration of the events that Jim (pronounced Crow-Chee) Croce witnessed while serving in the military ... on base. In that time, of course, people had no cell phones, and on base, the ONLY phone you could get to was just a few payphones. The problem is hundreds of soldiers trying to call home so the lines were really long and Jim, would hear these men on the phone, but many getting what is the equivalent to a "Dear John" letter, finding you that their wives or girlfriends were with someone else. So, this is why he starts out the song asking for the operator's help. He wants to call them to tell them (his girlfriends/wife and his "best old ex-friend Ray) that he has recovered from the shock of their betrayal, but he realizes that he's just trying to convince himself. Verse #1 Operator, well could you help me place this call? See, the number on the match book is old and faded She's living in L.A. with my best old ex-friend Ray A guy she said she knew well and sometimes hated Ultimately, throughout the song, he realizes this, apologizes to the operator for wasting her time and says goodbye. Such a sad, beautiful but heart-wrenching song. He's got a bunch of great tunes, some funny, some sad, some hopeful/philosophical ... but all pretty dang good. I second the suggestions of Bad, Bad Leroy Brown Don't mess around with Jim Time in a bottle He was one of a slew of tragic losses in the music world, taken way too soon, but not from the effects of personal vices but rather from plane crashes, tour bus accidents, and the like...Big Bopper, Patsy Cline are two others that were lost in such ways. My parents were big fans as teens and my first introduction to him was probably Time in a Bottle when I was in middle school.

Jim’s story was so tragic. He was barely able to enjoy the success that he had worked for. He and Maury Muehleisen (the other guitarist) were both killed in a plane crash. Jim was just 30. His other hits include “Time in a Bottle”, “I Got A Name”, “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” and “I Have To Say I Love You in A Song” plus more. Jim and Maury’s harmonies were beautiful. I’ve always heard his name pronounced Crow-chee. He died in a chartered plane crash at the age of 31, after leaving a show. He left behind a wife and 2-year-old son. For his short time in the industry, he had a host of hits. Somewhere on KZbin, there is a short documentary of his life, that includes an interview with his wife.

His guitarist, Maury Muehleisen, was also killed in the crash. He was just 24. Jim’s son, A.J., is a singer and he’s covered some of his dad’s songs. He sounds a lot like Jim but with a more current style. It’s especially poignant hearing him sing “I’ve Got a Name”. He also did “Time in a Bottle”.

Jim Croce has such a small discography and you can listen in one sitting and I recommend it. Jim Croce (crow-chee) and his guitarist Maury Muelheisen are phenomenal! Jim was actually a backup guitar player and singer for Maury when Maury released his "Gingerbreadd" album in 1970. Maury helped Jim finished some of his songs and then Jim hit it big. Other songs: "Dreamin' Again" is my personal favorite, "Time In A Bottle," "It Doesn't Have to be that Way," "I Got A Name" (album and song released posthumously), and "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song." But you can't go wrong with any Jim Croce song. All of them are good to masterpieces!

I adored Jim Croce and was devastated when I heard on the radio he had died (on my birthday). I was stuck on a road trip with my dad and could not mourn properly. When people do those who would you bring back posts, most say Mercury or MJ or a Beatle or Prince. I always say Jim Croce.

Another great folk rock singer songwriter who we lost so young. This is the music I grew up with. Unique storyteller & ballad singer. He touches your soul. One of my favorite parts is in the third verse when he says "you can keep the dime." And then he sings nothing in the next bar (if that's the right term) -- a spot where he did sing a line in both of the previous verses. To me, that lyricless bar signifies that he is so choked with emotion tat he can't even speak. Genius!

RIP Jim Croce (crow-chee) and I thank him for being one of the guitarists to inspire a 15yo me in 1975 to learn the acoustic guitar. Jim, along with fellow singer songwriters Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Harry Chapin (chay-pin), Janis Ian, and Joni Mitchell, all had very unique and differing styles of finger picking, and strumming techniques. The latter, Ian and Mitchell also were accomplished pianists from the folk music scene. And you're right, there's nothing sweeter than the simplicity of a musician w just their voice and instrument. ❤

You really can't go wrong here. His more popular songs are Time in a Bottle, Bad Bad Leroy Brown and You Don't Mess Around with Jim. Those are fantastic too but the deeper cuts are much better imo. Even DEEPER ones would be Alabama Rain, I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song (actually not that deep lol) and A Good Time Man Like Me.

Pronounce his last name as "CROW-chee." Love Jim's music. I see that many others have gotten in here before this, with a bunch of everyone's favorites that Jim also sang. My favorite has always been "Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown." Next to that, is "Time in a Bottle." It was a terribly sad day when he and Maury were in the plane wreck...sitting here crying. The same thing happened with Keith Green, and his two older children. His wife runs a website, that carries all of his wonderful, wonderful songs, such as, "So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt," and "Oh, Lord, You're Beautiful." Thanks for reacting. Idk if you caught all the lyrics but it's a sad song. His girl took off with his best friend and moved to LA. He's talking to the operator and asking for her help getting a hold of her. He says the number on the matchbook is old and faded. That's how you took down people's numbers a lot bc most people smoked and had them in their pocket. Then he says that he can't see the number that she just gave him. "There's something in my eye. You know happens most every time", Now he crying. Whew. Then he tells the operator to forget it bc there's no one there he really wanted to talk to anyway. Then he tells her that she can keep the dime. Which means he was at a pay phone and he had put a dime in up to that point - but if your call didn't go through, the operator would somehow release your money back. He told her, "thank you for your time, you've been so much more than kind. You can keep the dime". Any song recommended down below is fire! Amazing song writer/singer/guitarist.

Jim was more or less a duo, his other half being Maury Muehleisen. Jim wrote the songs, sang lead, and played second guitar; Maury sang harmony and played lead. They were both killed in a small-plane crash. A great loss to music.

This was the song that inspired me to try to learn guitar. It wasn't until years later that I'd realized it was the sound of two guitars. Their fingerpicking is exquisite and it's a gorgeous arrangement (Maury Muehleisen on the 2nd guitar). I finally learned how to play a comp version of it, but it took a while. I don't grow out my nails, but use my fingertips instead, although I'll play with a thumb pick occasionally - takes getting used to, but it's worth it! Great reaction!

These early 70s songs really surprise me because I was just a little kid and they were always in the background, usually from my Mom's car radio or while she's cleaning house. At the time, I only knew "Operator, would you help me place this call" and would sing along to that part only, everything else after that didn't make any sense to me. I was too young to understand it. As an adult, it's amazing how the lyrics now hit me hard against a melody I knew from childhood and thought was a happy one. It's like having your childhood open up into adulthood and that song came along for the ride 15-20 years later.

Jim Crow-chee is how it's pronounced. Another one gone much too soon. His son is now singing his dad's songs. He was a baby when his dad died. His mother got involved with another man and when AJ was 4, this man beat him so badly, AJ lost his eyesight. I believe he's recovered most of it now. You need to listen to “I Got A Name.” Though it was one of the few songs that he sang that was not written by him, it is his best song, in my view. It was released the day after he and his co-guitarist, died in a tragic plane crash and reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It is one of his most upbeat and timeless classics. and was picked by Quentin Tarantino for the soundtrack for the movie Django Unchained.
