This IS NOT Metallica at their peak. This was a band that was 3 years removed from losing their heart soul, backbone and principle writer, Cliff Burton, in a bus accident. This is with their replacement bass player, who couldn't hold a candle to the original and while they were being accused by their original audience of selling out and turning their backs on their base to be a Teeny Bopper band. They are playing literally as fast as their middle aged millionare fingers could push them and it sounds sloppy and desperate. Listen to the original recording and check out footage from 84, 85 and 86. These guys were just starting their pop career by this point and this music, for all practical purposes, was behind them. I saw them in 88 at the Monsters of Rock and walked out of their performance because Lars couldn't even keep up with his own band by then. This was pathetic by comparison to the original and they sounded this way from 87 til now and if you didn't see them in both eras, don't even talk to me about it because you have no leg to stand on. You'll just have to trust the people that were there to see both to understand or watch the existing video footage. I completely lost interest in them by 89 and nothing they have done since has drawn me back in.

@@t0talimm0rtalz Of course you're entitled to your opinion, I just hope you got to see them live in the late 80's or very early 90's. My opinion, that I'm entitled to, is that Hardwired is an over-produced attempt to sound like they used to... definitely worked for the lame-stream surface fans. To me, it's equivalent to AC/DC's Razor's Edge... it's lacking that "something" that made them legend.

@@Mike_H76 You’re the type of guy who will complain that Metallica has shifted away from their original sound but then complain about them going back and producing a thrash album such as hardwired. Death magnetic is overlooked and undervalued from metal consumers as well. If you stay up to date on their current live performances, James, Kirk, and even Rob have improved drastically since the late 90’s and early 2000’s performances. The difference between 2015 Hardwired and MOP is 30 years of age, which is a lot. That includes new sounds and appealing to what is listened to today while sticking to their original roots.

I’ve seen Metallica around 15 times in concert since 1986. Their 1989 Justice tour was absolutely the pinnacle of their energy and speed, live. Unfortunately they were also extreme alcoholics and dysfunctional at the same time, believe it or not. The core 3, James, Lars and Kirk still hadn’t gotten past the death of their original bassist, Cliff Burton, in a tour bus accident in 1986. They only took maybe a month or two off before replacing him with Jason Newstead (who is the bassist in this video) and then continued to tour for their 3rd album. So it’s pretty mind blowing that they still could get on stage and blast out this kind of performance. James has said he never played drunk though, the severe drinking was after the show was over into the next morning. How they functioned, let alone played like this, while getting completely hammered every night on tour, I can’t understand. So yes, this is the pinnacle of their live show. I last saw them live in 2009, where I was lucky enough to get to meet the band. Unfortunately I’ve become disabled and due to that and other complications, I likely won’t ever be able to see them live again. However, each and every single time was amazing. The energy they put out is intense and palpable. The energy the crowd sends back is the same. The band and crowd feed off each other to create this intense energy loop between them. I know that’s weird to say, but you have to go to a live show of theirs to understand what I’m talking about, it’s surreal. The energy at the 1989 Justice tour shows though, like the one in this video, were just a massive cut above all the rest. The feeling was near euphoric and I got lost in the show and music for their entire set. The stage show was also incredible, where they blow up a giant statue of a broken Lady Justice (nicknamed “Doris”). The pyrotechnics for the song “One” were also incredible, mimicking the machine gun fire at the beginning of the song. Anyway, sorry for the essay…Metallica has been my number one band since I was 11, in 1984. I’ve stuck with them through all the changes in style, and actually liked most of it. Their first four albums though are just…masterpieces, and their live performances of those albums in 1989 were the best concerts I’d ever seen, to this day.

@clonexx
@clonexx 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeremchapman732 Unfortunately the combo of age and a lack of practice time has seen Lars’ skills decline. He seems to have become lazy when it comes to drums, unlike James who has remained a monster on guitar. It doesn’t really bother me much, he was a nice guy when I met him and treated me well. I still enjoyed all the concerts I went to, including and especially my last one in 2009. Metallica will remain my #1 band for life, regardless of what happens. I’m one of the rare fans I guess that actually likes most of their catalogue and not just albums 1-4 and maybe Magnetic/Hardwired.

The San Diego concert video and mexico city cd are the literal peak as far as I'm concerned. Mexico show is cocaine fast. San Diego is the best I've personally seen but tied with the Seattle show. Seattle is just at the end of the Justice tour and the other two are from the black album tour. After the black album era, their age and lifestyle and everything resulted in somewhat of a shift in tone and sound but since the Binge and Purge era they've remained ridiculously great live.

I'd say just go through the entire Seattle 89 show😅 I'd recommend watch And Justice For All next from this show... And I'd also recommend S&M (1999) as another unique and fantastic performance I'd recommend Bleeding Me or The Outlaw Torn from that show (if you'd like to see the passage of time, then check out S&M2 as well which was performed in 2019) And also check out their performance in Nimes, France in 2009 if you'd like... I'd recommend All Nightmare Long from that show... Much Love & Respect🙏🤘

I was a Metallica fan that was a fan before they were big..... you would have to go to underground clubs just to hear their music... I have been and continue to be a fan as their music has evolved with the changing times... to me that is what makes a great band... absolutely their earlier years were their best ... I have seen them live 15 times ... they are amazing at their best live for sure

This is why Metallica is my favorite band and got me into playing guitar. This concert i've watched thousands of times over 20 years and it never gets old. The thing that Should not be is my favorite from this concert due to Jason's brutal voice. Just all together what a performance.

Glad you did this classic song from a classic concert of theirs. Imho though their 'hardest' song is the last one from Master of Puppets. A little gem called Damage Inc. You should probably do a HD studio version for it

It may indeed their peak. I love their early stuff, was 17 when they first came on the scene. I think 2022 has seen them with renewed energy, playing as well imo as the early days. At 57 now, and they are hands down my favourite rock band still.

I'm curious, have you ever heard the music of Voltaire? I'd love if you'd react to his songs. Some good ones include: - 'The Headless Waltz' - 'The Night' - 'Goodnight Demonslayer' - 'Raised by Bats' There are many more, though; and all so very good.

Metallica were probably at their peak live from 1986 to 1999 - it just depends on what songs and style you’re looking for. S&M is their best concert video imo. It’s the perfect performance and a great mix of songs enhanced by great production.

Definitely in the peak Metallica age here. I think this was '89 and I consider their peak to be from '86 to '92. 'Binge and Purge' is probably one of their last live recordings from the peak times even though that was recorded in '93.
