Yes, Babytonix…but they had come through the Sing-Off…and won. They knew the power of their gifts and how to use them. Smart, clever and very innovative…all their early stuff was outside the box. Without the benefit of a recording studio or contract (phbbbbbttt) they improv acoustics in a closet, bathroom, stairwell, a brick garage or basement…..who needs all the bells and whistles when you have talent…and magic!

Watch their journey through the Sing-Off competition to see exactly how they started out and won that competition to begin their careers.

I watch so many reactors, so forgive me if I've missed something. Have you reacted to their 2011 The Sing Off performances (NBC)? The program does intros and outros where they talk about their formation and journey. And, yes, they were always this good! There are 12 performances available on YT, which include their judges' comments. It might be an interesting trip for you.

You MUST watch their Sing-Off performances, whether you react to them or not. We all enjoy traversing all of the Sing-Off shows with each reactor who discovers them, so we'll hang around for it if you do decide to react. You'll find high school performances by the Trio (Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie), grade school performances, lots of parking garage and stairwell videos, all the SuperFruit shows. They have definitely gotten better--more confidence, better control, more risk-taking, more range. But the talent was always there.

Definitely if you want to see how they started you could check out the sing-off season 3. They got together the day before the audition. Other songs Mad World, Lucky Ones (look for live version, no official video, original), Be My Eyes (original). If you want to branch out-Scott Hoying has two solo videos, Mitch (going by Messer) has solo EP, SuperFruit their Future Friends album. I’m glad you are still doing Pentatonix. My take on this is that they were singing for their lives there. They had just been dropped from Sony after winning the Sing Off and they HAD to get their faces and voice out there. This is their genius result! I believe they did Daft Punk Medley in the same timeframe, where they won a Grammy! They were meant to be IMO. Amazing reaction, as usual.

I always love your reactions to Pentatonics, your utter joy when listening to them is infectious. Like me you are a huge Mitch fan, so I would recommend "MAD WORLD" where you hear Mitch singing in his lower register, which is just as beautiful as his higher range. Or their upgrade of AHA's "Take On Me" where Mitch covers his full range from low to high in each chorus. But to experience Mitch at his most angelic and powerful, it would have to be his solo cover of "Your Power" which doesn't just tug on the heart strings it reaches in, pulls them out and ties them in a ruddy great knot.

You should do their third season of the Sing Off. These are their very first public performances. They were not all together until a couple of days before the Sing Off audition. Although amazing to start with, you can see how they improve throughout the season. The judges are all talented musicians and PTX took their constructive criticism to heart. What they learned and figured out from the show made PTX what they are today. Be sure to select the full performances that include the introduction, the performance, the judge’s’ comments, and, in some cases, the last second PTX reaction. They return for a guest appearance in season four.

I believe this was filmed in the parking garage of their LA apartment building they all lived in / moved to after they won the Sing Off (and then were dropped by the recording contract they won in the contest) I believe this was not produced in a studio, they were really singing in the parking garage for the acoustics. Pentaholics, please correct me if I’m wrong!

The beginning of the journey for PTX is the acapella competition show "the Sing Off". They were on and won season 3 against 15 other groups. You can see the band's improvement from show to show. I recommend the videos from Mr. Duck Bear, they include pre show practice and arranging clips, the stage performance, and judges comments. Some videos have band comments in the outro.

The first is 16-year-old Mitch singing a solo and the second is Scott and Mitch performing an original song duet. Talk about babies with stunning talent…..👏🏻💜 PTX is definitely a match made BY heaven imo.

The first time I saw Pentatonix live was in a small theater in SE Portland. The venue held about 3-400 people. The second time I saw them was at the Rose Garden, in a crowd of a few thousand. The only difference was the quality of their presentation. They have always been amazing with or without all the bells and whistles.

This was pretty much the first video that PTX did that became a viral hit. "Viral hit" obviously has a different meaning these days than it did when PTX released this video - even after all this time, it's still "only" got 74 million views, which isn't nearly enough IMO. But it really gave them a boost in confidence and viewers when they were scratching to make a living doing what they loved, and it really helped them continue on their way. You mentioned VoicePlay - you seemed to really enjoy their My Mother Told Me video, but haven't reacted to their sequel, Valhalla Calling (same Viking feel to the song). And Geoff Castellucci, their bass, hits not 1, not 2, but 3 B0 notes in that song! Speaking of Geoff - his latest, I See Fire, is the best thing he's done so far IMO, and really shows off all of his skills - arranging, singing (both high and low), editing, and has some amazing makeup and costumes included. Highly recommended!

They currently record audio in the studio for the most part and film the video separately. But this was 11 years ago, and it's time you got a brief history of how Pentatonix began, so here goes. Kirstie, Mitch, and Scott all grew up in Arlington, Texas. All 3 were involved with community musical theater when they were children, which is where Mitch met Scott and Kirstie, separately, when he was 9 or 10 (I think - their ages have been stated differently on different occasions). So Mitch was friends with both of the others from a very young age. Somehow, though, Scott and Kirstie didn't meet each other until they were 14 and found themselves in the same class in high school, at which point all three of them became best friends. They all went to the same high school, and were all in choir together (big surprise there, huh?), and at some point there was a singing contest for a chance to meet the cast of _Glee,_ which they wanted to enter. So the 3 best friends formed a trio to compete in the contest, which they named "The Trio." This is why pentaholics still refer to them as "the trio." The Trio didn't win the contest, but they also didn't disband. They continued to perform at school events and occasionally on local television. Scott and Kirstie were a year ahead of Mitch in high school, and both graduated in 2010, at which point they each went off to college. Kirstie went to the University of Oklahoma, where she had a full ride scholarship (!), and Scott went to the University of Southern California. Scott is extremely extroverted, and he wanted a fast way to make some new friends, so he started looking for extracurricular activities he could join where he could meet people, and what he found was an award-winning amateur a cappella group named "SoCal VoCals." Naturally, he joined, and through them he met a guy named Ben Bram. Ben was working as a coach on an NBC show named _"The Sing-Off."_ _The Sing-Off_ was an a cappella competition show. A band would audition for the show, and if they passed the audition they would appear on the show repeatedly throughout an entire season. Each performance would be appraised by a panel of 3 judges, all professional singers, and some bands would be eliminated along the way, narrowing the field. After 12 performances, the viewers would be allowed to vote. The winning group would recieve $200,000 and a recording contract with Epic, a minor subsidiary of Sony, which sponsored the show. Scott was intrigued when he heard about _The Sing-Off._ He thought The Trio could be competitive, and if they won they could have a career doing what they loved most, with the people they loved most. He talked with Kirstie, and she thought it sounded possible, which just left Mitch. So as soon as their freshman year of college ended, Scott and Kirstie headed home to Arlington for Mitch's graduation, and to float Scott's idea to Mitch. Meanwhile, Mitch had had a very difficult senior year. He and Scott are both gay and had both come out of the closet already. Scott is a big guy, and a baritone, so he hadn't had to deal with too much gay-bashing, but Mitch's high voice had made him a target. With his two best friends gone Mitch had become the favorite target of the high school bullies. And unfortunately, HE thought it really was his voice they were bullying him for. So when Scott presented his plan Mitch was doubtful - after all, no one would want to hear HIM sing. But, it would get him out of Arlington and away from the bullies, and if Scott and Kirstie thought they might win, maybe they could. Okay. He was on board. The Trio should audition for _The Sing-Off._ So Scott called Ben Bram to find out how to get an audition, and they ran into their first hurdle. _The Sing-Off_ had a size requirement. Bands must have at least five members. The Trio needed two new members and a new name. Ben suggested that they'd do well to add a rhythm section - a bass and a beatboxer. For a bass he knew an operatically trained basso profundo he thought would be interested, a guy named Avi Kaplan, but he had no idea where they should look for a beatboxer. So The Trio talked to Avi, who was indeed interested, and they had their bass. But they also had no idea where to find a beatboxer. Then someone remembered that there was this new website Google was running named "KZbin." Why not look there? So they went to KZbin and typed "beatboxer" into the search box, and the first hit they got was this black guy playing a cello and beatboxing at the same time, and they all said "Wow! He's the one! Let's get him!" Good idea, but not exactly a plan. HOW do you "get him"? Well, it turns out that at the time KZbin had private messaging available (since discontinued) so they sent him a message. "Hey! We really like what you do, and are you interested in flying across the country to audition for an a cappella competition TV show with four strangers?" And Kevin messaged them back. "Normally I'd be right there; I've been involved with a cappella groups before and I love a cappella. But right now I'm studying for my final exams for my premed degree from Yale." Sigh. That sounded pretty definite; better look for someone else. But no one else was as good as Kevin. And two weeks later they got another message from Kevin. "Good news! I just graduated. If the gig's still open I can fly out." Kevin and Avi actually met The Trio the day before they had to audition. Mitch skipped his high school graduation ceremony in order to attend the audition. Oh, and the new name? Pentatonix is named for the pentatonic scale, which has five (penta) tones just Pentatonix has five (Penta) singers. In other words, it's a fancy way of saying "The Quintet." 😂 Pentatonix appeared throughout the third season (2011) of _The Sing-Off,_ eventually winning it. They all moved to California and got apartments in the same building, ready to start recording. And a week later Epic reneged on the contract, saying that they didn't know how to market a cappella. But by this time all five of them were totally invested in making the dream come true, so they pooled their winnings, lived frugally, and filmed themselves on their iPhones so they could post to KZbin. "Somebody That I Used To Know" is from that period. They didn't HAVE a recording studio, so they were recording anywhere they could find good acoustics, like stairwells, and parking structures. The location gives it away - this was filmed at the same time the audio was being recorded. If you truly want to see the earliest recordings of Pentatonix, all of those performances on _The Sing-Off_ are still available on KZbin, and they're well worth watching, preferably in order so you can see how they matured over the course of that single season. Some of those performances are at least as good as anything they do now, and are available nowhere else.

I appreciate your sticking with Pentatonix. Several others have recommended watching their SingOff performances but not told you where to find them. I believe there is a complete set on the Solenn Breizh channel, numbered 1-14. Here's the first performance from there -- kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX3ceHqarNR3pck The performances were captured off the television broadcast, and there are several other channels that have some or all. Quality varies, as does content; only some include the short documentary intros and the judges comments afterward. A couple of years ago you could find all the Pentatonix performances nicely edited and numbered on multiple channels but last year some performances were taken down and are now only available from non-US channels.

It's true that they already started being so good but for me there was a major improvement, like they started at 10 and went to a 100, individually their voices have matured so much and they have an amazing balance now but in terms of harmony with each other they've improved so much, but it's also true that they were incredible just from the start. If you wanna see how they started and their journey I recommend you watch their performances from the Sing-Off, that's when they really started, and it's very fun to see how they improve in the show. Pentatonix was formed to participate in the Sing Off, a TV competition for a cappella groups. All of their performances on the show are on KZbin, so if you really want to go back to the beginning, you sure can. The judges were three industry experts and they gave some invaluable constructive criticism that the group took to heart, and that helped to shape their development. It’s amazing how talented they were right off the bat, although less polished than today. Loved your reaction, as always. Peace …

They were awesome right from the start, it’s amazing. I hope that you will find the time to react to more of Avi’s solo music and suggest “First place I go” and (from his 2022 EP “Live at Sunset Sound” ), “When I’m a fool”.

No, I know exactly what you mean about them starting from 10, though. The first time I went back and watched through their performances from the Sing-Off, you can see that with the trio at only 19 years old, never having performed with Avi or Kevin before, they were already doing things nobody else was doing. The very first time this group stepped on a stage together, they were already 1 of 1, which feels like it's just not supposed to be possible. But they damn sure did it anyway.

Yes they have always been that good. It is really one of the mysteries of the universe. One of the other mysteries is why they get no airplay at all except for Christmas music around Christmas.

In addition to the sing off (at least the first episode of season 3 with PTX in it), you should do Prayers for this World, which came out in October or November 2022. You will see how they have evolved with that comparison!

OOOH, 3K til 300k! There is plenty of the trifecta acapella to react to. Pentatonix, Voiceplay and Home Free. Pentatonix - Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is one you haven't reacted to, but maybe hold off til Christmas.

Absolutely recommend Kevin's solo from Pentatonix live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4enopWqmtWnac0 -- the beginning is Kevin's origin story, worth watching! Specifically at 8:13 is Kevin's Fifth, which is critical. :D

There is a story that Gotye ran into a PTX member (Scott? Ben Bram? dunno). He mentioned that he'd heard the cover of his song and loved it. He said his DAD mentioned it to him and sent the link! (Dad loved it too.)

Before you reach the end of the journey, go back and get the real beginnings. They were formed a few days before a multi month televised national singing competition, Sing Off. Go watch that one, from the first week to the end. You will see their growth in those 12 performances in route to winning that national televised competition. Enjoy!!!

Hi Luke. I would like to suggest that You react to PTX on the 3rd season "the sing-off!" That's were they started their career. Search for "Mr duchbear" - i think. That's the best recordings including the comments from the judges.

My favorite Voiceplay video I their cover of “The Oogie Boogie Song” from the movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. Absolutely amazing rendition of that song, and their bass singer (Geoff Castalucci) shows off his tremendous range as he does the lead part.
