Any video vaguely related to this album has this as the top comment. Same person or not, how about just stop please. In my defense this is far and away my favorite female vocalist album of all time. But Lorde fans just obsessively point out the most boring aspect of anything. And it gets upvoted. Anything to say that's potentially cooler than that? Considering 100 people say that exact thing constantly. This is like every fantano video having "you can't just ___ and call it a 10" as 90% of the comments. How about people say something else

When hearing this album for the first time retroactively it's important to consider the context. When _Pure Heroine_ was released in 2013, it influenced and changed pop music with its subject matter, tone, sparse electro beats and minimalism. Kinda ironic as it was made on a tiny budget in a phone booth sized vocal room, a computer and 2 synthesizers. The colorful word pallet is impressive considering she was 16.
@Luscent3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that makes a lot of sense she showed so much promise but really mastered it for Melodrama I think! Excited for Solar Power to see what she can do now 4 years on!

I'm the same age as Lorde. And I can confirm that relating to this album is a generational thing in many ways. When this album came out, it marked a before and after in terms of what was portrayed in pop music at the time. That nostalgia feeling for something you didn't even knew you lived, or worse, for something you weren't even sure you were going to be able to experience, it's just crazy. And the idea of being scared of future and growing up in Ribs remains real until today. Many of the lyrics were so relatable, I hold Pure Heroin in a very special place of my heart.

I’ve also always thought about it in reference to the tennis court oath during the French Revolution. It makes sense with the royalty and anti-establishment/authority themes

When listening to pure heroine we have the remember the environment in which it emerges. I remember back then there was no such thing as this kinda dark dream pop… and it was so progressive. We are talking about a 16 yo from New Zealand. Dropping such a project from nothing… the narratives are kinda a mellow and sad but also super ironic and metaphorical. Everything is so representative of all this teenagers who don’t necessarily identify themselves with like Katy Perry and stuff she was so new, raw, pure, dark… ohh gosh i miss those days!!!
@Luscent3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it must've been a big deal for those people! Like in Royals she literally says look I don't identify with the current pop landscape and so many must have related to that sentiment

My high-school experience happened while she was rolling out this album so the songs hold really nostalgic memories for me cause I can remember moments in the car with my friends listening to songs like 400 LUX with Nowhere to go because we were minors. Riding around drinking and smoking being reckless high schoolers having water wars, going to parties. Simpler times. Now I have to pay bills 😒

I'm the same age as Lorde, so when this album came out my relationship with music changed. As a weird kid who always felt like an outcast I found a true connection to her songs, the teenage angst, the insecurity, and the embrace of not being the status quo. Pure Heroine was also literally the first album that made me appreciate albums as one body of work with a uniting central theme. Ironic that Bowie coined her the future of music, because Bowie only became my favorite artist after Lorde made me open to listen to whole incredible albums outside the generic pop world.
@Swiftb00k53 жыл бұрын
This is my interpretation - 400 lux is the sunset light and you can actually make a sound out of 400 lux which is that wired horn played, the song itself is about being a in a car at sunset with someone you love “you pick me up then take me home again head out the window again” I didn’t like it at first but it’s one of fav tracks there are so many clever lyrics in it ,also can we appreciate she was 14/15 when she wrote these?!? love the reactions! I agree - this is an album of teenage thoughts and discovery, but I’m all for the sparse and often abrasive production. It was ‘400 Lux’ that blew me away on first listen - so experimental and sonically challenging (in a good way) for a pop song. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but I wouldn’t blame the production or mixing; I’d just put it down to personal taste. Fasten your seatbelt before listening to a Charli XCX record 😉

i always had the theory that tennis court was about the french revolution because of the class clown and beauty queen (king louis’ poor leadership and marie antoinette’s reknown beauty) and then a big event was when the revolutionaries were meeting but were locked out of their usual location so they moved to the tennis court to show that the meetings and revolution couldn’t be stopped. also the beginning lyrics sound like the perception of marie antoinette being bored and rich

I have to admit that I listened to this album for the first time this year, too. I can‘t stretch enough how much I would‘ve connected to it when it came out, Lorde and I are the same age! I have to say that it took me a couple listens to appreciate the album the way it deserves to be appreciated in my opinion and now some of the songs are all time favorites for me, especially Buzzcut season, Glory and Gore and 400 lux. And I still can’t wrap my head around how this is a debut album that came out when she was 16 (!!!). Also, I will die on that hill that, Production wise, it was ahead of its time although it sounds maybe a bit off today. If you‘re interested, there’s also an extended edition of the album with 5 extra songs that were her ‚Love Club EP‘ and I think they‘re amazing too!

Since Pure Heroine, Lorde already shows how smart and unique she is, like who the hell thought of that album lyrics and theme at a very young age (she wrote like she came from Shakespear’s Era) , and that album already were futuristic back in the day, just listen to pop music at that time, you can tell she’s unique, and after that the pop music changed a lot like her, then melodrama came, it changed the music again like her style. Such a Queen.

When I heard buzzcut season the first thing I thought of was cancer (other people have also made the connection a lot): « head caught flame » « it kissed your scalp and caressed your blame » is the cancer, and having to shave your head because of treatment coinciding with buzzcut season and summer. And the song is about living in a tiny world of ease and suburban comfort juxtaposed with the grounding and perspective of the sickness

21:13 More accurately she says only bad people LIVE to see their likeness set in stone Eluding to how throughout history, typically the only leaders who erected statues of themselves while they were still alive were bad people. (Dictators, etc) Whereas, when someone builds a statue of you when you die, typically it was because you did something great for people, and are to be respected Tldr: Statues of someone whos alive are supposed to be feared, Statues of someone whos dead are meant to be respected.

I agree with much of what you said! I think it's good that perhaps 'Pure Heroine' isn't as much relevant for us anymore, as that shows we have grown (up). I remember, at the time, it was transcendent to see all my teenage-thoughts put out there by a teenager, which is also what you mentioned. This sense of community she built, throughout a whole generation of listeners, raised on the internet, dancing in their world alone, hypercritical of consumption and opulence, anti-establishment. Crazy to think about what she achieved, and the stress it must have brought along with it. The one thing I think we differ on is the production being too 'rough' or 'harsh'. Whenever you said that I thought: That's the point. It's supposed to be very contrasting, even sometimes awkward or clunky or not-too-polished. Because that's what your teenage years are. These clunky messes of trial and error, and that's what this album felt like production-wise to me too. And perhaps that's also why Melodrama is more refined. Much like us, she has grown too, and moves on to different topics and sounds, different ways of finding contrast. Those are now more pleasing to us too most likely, growing simultaneously. TL:DR 'Pure Heroine' was a growing pains and coming of age album, that still speaks on relevant topics (finding community, confidence, capitalist critique, etc.). Furthermore, she was one of the trendsetters when it came to introducing new and alternative sounds, and experimenting after a huge hit (Royals). Again, this emphasizes her individuality and her very 'anti-' personality. When she should have gone right, creating a sweet and fun 'pop' album, she went totally left field. Lorde stan forever! (Also my favorite Lorde song is still Ribs, closely followed by Hard Feelings / Loveless). Thanks for reading, and for your reaction :)

I heard an interview where she said when she toured Pure Heroine, she realised the album didnt have much movement, so she wanted a more kinetic album to follow. I think she achieved this with Melodrama. It also makes sense that in your teens, you are more likely to journal heavy feelings, in 20s you dance them out

I reckon all those sounds you don't like over taking the vocals, I believe is Lorde just turning up what she likes because her vocals weren't in her mind the focus of her music until it turns out it was to most people. I also think PH was meant to capture essence and feeling. She understood that this album was hard to dance to and people were captured but not moved, so Melodrama was to get people moving and to move people. Like you said while the world at the time was telling us to get drunk party and do drugs, she let us know it's ok to just enjoy the little things in our simple neighbourhoods and school life, young love. Pop music really changed since then influenced by this realisation that people wanted real stuff not the fake stuff I think.
