This was a direct response to Rodney King and the LA Riots. Rage Against The Machine....pretty much what it says on the tin. They are unapologetically political. And definitely pay close attention to the lyrics if you do Down Rodeo or Testify.

I feel testify is a bit more of a niche song for them. It's one of my favorites they have ever done but it doesn't hit as hard as some others do for sure. It kinda falls into that middle category of Rage songs that aren't their standouts but are for more dedicated listeners.

Lyrically it's very repetitive but that's the point of it. Riffs are amazing. They're talking about white supremacy in the police, basically.

Also I’m love performances they say “some of those that hold office are those that burn crosses”. Also saying that it’s not only the police that are racist but also the government as a whole.

Most Rage songs condemn oppression and injustice. This song condemns white supremacy and police brutality. The lyrics were "Some of those who work (police) forces are the same who burn crosses" and "Those who died are justified by wearing a badge (police) they're the chose whites". You should watch Rage's live 1993 performance of this song. They absolutely KILL it in their live 1993 performance of this song. Other Rage songs with a good message: - "Know Your Enemy" WITH lyrics (need the lyrics for this one) - "The Ghost of Tom Joad" WITH lyrics (need the lyrics for this one) - "Renegades of Funk" - "Bulls on Parade" (quite possibly their most famous song of all time) Honestly, the list could go on and on. Just check out all their stuff.

Don't get it wrong: they have all their songs with MANY lyrics and powerful, this one is special, it's about the rage against police violence (it was following riots in LA)... But you should continue do try them: they are "top tier" and almost all tracks (if not just all), from their first album are impressively good and on point.

This is one of many from RATM to put on your leg day playlist. Check out "Bombtrack" as well. Tom Morello on guitar is like no other. Anything with Morello on guitar will be worthy of a leg day list. He also played for Audioslave with Chris Cornell then went on to play with Prophets of Rage that was comprised of members from Public Enemy and Cypress Hill.

I was in my early 20's when RATM released this album and back then we hit 15-20 concerts a year because bands like RATM, Metallica, Pantera, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Guns 'N Roses, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie, and many others were releasing new albums about every year and my group of friends and myself were there for all of them. It's funny to me now when you buy a ticket it says general admission on it but it has a section, row, and seat number on it which was always called reserved seating back in those days because general admission meant that everybody lined up outside all the entrances and waited for the doors to open. When the doors did open there were about 20 people right there to take tickets and as soon as those doors opened it was chaos everybody was pushing and running and as you went through the doors you held out your ticket but kept a really tight grip about halfway up the half of the ticket you wanted to keep. As you held out the ticket while rushing through the door one of the people who were taking tickets would just grab the other end and rip it in half as you went by. There were a lot of times my tickets never got ripped or even touched for that matter. There were a few times none of us even had a ticket but we made sure to be there real early so we would be at the front of the line where it would be most chaotic right off the bat and we all got in by just acting like we held out tickets but kept moving fast. Once you got through the ticket takers it was a free for all for the best seats. The first ones to the seat got that seat. I got really good at getting up on the backs of the seats and running on the chair backs down toward the floor seats in the front because the aisles were always packed with people pushing shoving and cussing each other out. It was a huge adrenaline rush and one hell of an experience just getting to the seats not to mention the actual concert. I say all that because out of all the concerts I was at there were only two bands that had the kind of energy that fed energy to the crowd and you could feel it all around you like electricity in the air. Metallica and RATM had that kind of energy but out of those bands RATM had an effect on the crowd that cannot be explained it just completely took you over and made you want to give as much energy back by cheering and dancing around waving your arms or whatever you had to do to try and match the energy you felt from the band and their music. I was always completely exhausted for at least a few days after seeing RATM. It sounds crazy to need a few days to recuperate after a concert but it's true. I wish there were concert tours like that now. Then there were tours where great bands would tour as a group of 4, 5, or 6 bands all playing full music sets. There were the Monsters of Rock tours, Ozzfest, Mayday, and to a lesser degree Lollapalooza. Coachella and Burning Man or whatever the modern "music festivals" are named are a joke compared the ones I listed. I credit RATM for having an affect on my life that helped shape my opinions and feelings about racial and social injustice because I was such a huge fan of their music I emulate the messages in their music in my everyday life.

Rage Against the Machine’s debut album is one of the angriest debut albums I’ve ever heard bar none with Korn’s debut album coming at a close second, which is ironic since both Zack de la Rocha and Jonathan Davis both sported dreadlocks and their live onstage presence was venomous energetic during their debut album periods not to mention both albums having an extremely distressing cover art and were responsible for shaking up the alternative metal scene and giving birth to Nu Metal respectively. If you want to react to Korn. I recommend their debut single, Blind.

Another two great RATM songs are Testify and Sleep Now in the Fire. If you do Sleep Now in the Fire you have to do the official video. They filmed it right outside the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) and they actually get arrested in the video. The song is about how Evil the economic system is. Testify is about how the US Media love the misrepresentation of world events. Both songs are from their 3rd album 'The Battle of Los Angeles' which came out in 1999.

I think it's just become a trend at this point, but I don't know why this song is always recommended as an introduction to Rage. This is probably one of my least favorite songs of theirs, and not because it's a bad song, but because they have so many much better songs. I'd suggest a few of them but it's pointless, because you won't get enough suggestions to warrant making another video. But just in case, do Bombtrack. Very few people, have reacted to Bombtrack, if any, and it'll set you apart from other channels.
