Far away one of Ronnie James Dio's most powerful vocal performances and this is years before he would go on to the recognition he was due as the singer for Black Sabbath and then his own band Dio. I love this era of Hard Rock that is bordering on Proto heavy metal... the imagery and the musicality is just through the roof and as you guys said it really paints a dramatic Epic story picture in your mind. This was one of the first attempts at symphonic rock that actually worked. After the guitar solo, the Munich Philarmonic Orchestra picks up one of the main riffs and plays it over and over towards the end, you can hear some violins come across and play a counterpoint melody. When this was released, Punk was taking off and Rainbow were largely ignored by the music press and were left pretty much to the rusted-on Deep Purple fans who would follow Blackmore to the ends of the earth. Even so, this album was voted the best ever metal album in a poll run by Kerrang magazine almost a decade later. An incredible lineup of first-class musicians featuring Blackmore at the peak of his powers and a young hungry Ronnie Dio determined to make his mark. While the entire album is all killer no filler, I feel that the opening track, Tarot Woman and the closer a Light in the Black are equal to this

Actually, Dio was already the oldest and the one with the longest music career in the band. He began as a rockabilly in late 50s got through the 60s psychedelic untill finally turning hard rock/heavy metal in the 70s opening for Deep Purple with his band Elf before joining Rainbow. Maybe "young" in terms of music style, at the time.

Glad you really enjoyed this. the reason for the tone of the song is that it's performed using Arabic scales. As for the guitar player and bandleader, Ritchie Blackmore, for me he's one of the best guitar players ever. Certainly Rainbow are the best Neo-classical rock band ever. You'd love songs like Eyes Of The World, Gates Of Babylon, Eyes Of Fire, Catch The Rainbow. To give you an idea of Ritchie's guitar playing, watch a video of Rainbow performing Beethoven's 9th (called Difficult To Cure for some reason) in Japan in 1984. It's on KZbin!

I thrashed the crap out of my cassette tapes listening to this in my youth -- awesome album! It's written from the perspective of someone who worshipped a wizard, taking part in building a tower for the wizard to fly from. But of course the wizard falls to his death, confirming that all their efforts were pointless, but the sight of a rainbow rising gives him some hope.

@bostonvair 2 жыл бұрын
It seemed every Rainbow album had one song that was the dramatic centerpiece of the album. The song was usually longer, with high production values and intense. This song is a masterpiece of that phenomenon. Rainbow also featured several different vocalists, and most people would agree that Ronnie James Dio was the most awesome of the bunch (though the others deserve some credit also). The last album they recorded with Dio was called "Long Live Rock and Roll and the "intense" song from that album was called "Gates of Babylon" which is another worth reacting to. The next vocalist was Graham Bonnet and the album "Down to Earth" had the song "Eyes of the World" which was that song on that album and another great song to react to. The next vocalist was Joe Lynn Turner. Now I don't have every Rainbow Album, but I do have the "Straight Between the Eyes" album, featuring Joe Lynn Turner on Vocals, and the IT song on that album was "Tearin' out My Heart" As others have pointed out, the guitarist was Richie Blackmore on all the albume (that I'm aware of) as Rainbow was really Blackmore's baby. Richie Blackmore was the guitarist of the band Deep Purple, who brought is such masterpieces as "Smoke on the Water." THere are other reaction-worthy songs besides these, I just wanted to point out the big-production, intense songs on each album. Other great songs to react to: The Man on the Silver Mountain (Dio) Long Live Rock and Roll (Dio) Since You Been Gone (Bonnet) (probably Rainbow's most commercially successful song)

Rainbow is one of my all time top groups with such great talent .... Ritchie Blackmore (guitarist - formally of Deep Purple), Ronnie James Dio (in the future Black Sabbath after Ozzy, and his own band Dio), Cozy Powell (such a great drummer with a ton of bands), Jimmy Bain (on bass) and Tony Carey ( on keyboard). They were something special, Stargazer being their epic classic. Suggest "Man on the Silver Mountain, Catch the Rainbow, Gates of Babylon, Temple of the King, Long Live Rock n Roll, Kill the King, The Shed, Light in the Black, 16th Century Greensleeves and a bunch more with other great singers. However the Ronnie years were something special.

You should also check out "A light in the black" which is part two of this story. Biblical was fairly close to the money, it's about people devoting themselves to leaders, in this case the wizard, who turn out not to be what they say they are. The people build a tower for the wizard, at a huge cost in lives, so that the wizard can fly, when he falls and there is blood on the sand, the spell he holds them under breaks and they see a rainbow rising and decide to go home.

Correct, but not quite :-) The first Rainbow album(Blackmores Rainbow) was actually recorded while Blackmore still was an official member of DP. Rainbow at that point was basically Dio's band ELF. Minus the guitarist(Steve Edwards) of course. Their first album is said to be Dio's favourite album from Rainbow, but personally I lean heavily on Rising to be the best.

Narrative from Wikipedia. Lead Guitar Richard Hugh Blackmore (born 14 April 1945) is an English guitarist and songwriter. He was a founding member of Deep Purple in 1968, playing jam-style hard rock music that mixed guitar riffs and organ sounds. He is prolific in creating guitar riffs and classically influenced solos. As a member of Deep Purple, Blackmore was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2016. While at school, Blackmore participated in sports including the javelin.[citation needed] He left school at age 15 and started work as an apprentice radio mechanic at nearby Heathrow Airport. He took electric guitar lessons from session guitarist Big Jim Sullivan. In his soloing, Blackmore combines blues scales and phrasing with dominant minor scales and ideas from European classical music. While playing he would often put the pick in his mouth, playing with his fingers. He occasionally uses the diatonic scale, with rapidly changing tonality. Blackmore credits fellow guitarist Eric Clapton's music with helping him develop his own style of vibrato around 1968 or 1969. In May 1964, Blackmore married Margit Volkmar (b. 1945) from Germany. They lived in Hamburg during the late 1960s. Following their divorce, Blackmore married Bärbel, a former dancer from Germany, in September 1969 until their divorce in early 1970s. As a result, he is a fluent German speaker. Blackmore has been an influence on guitarists such as Randy Rhoads, Brian May, and Yngwie Malmsteen.

The emotions of all the players come through but Ronnie's vocals give me chills and shed tears almost every time I hear it. It's a outstanding piece of music and unfortunately nobody will ever do it like this again. They should have been huge with songs like Terot Women and even black sheep of family should have been #1 hits and made them household names like Zeppelin. Great video you should do a Uriah heep song next video you will be surprised with their sound I think and it's earlier than Rainbow by a few years.

Rainbow is the second most famous of the many bands branching off the family tree of the legendary Deep Purple. (The most famous by far is Whitesnake, formed and led to this day by former Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale.) Rainbow was formed in 1975 by guitarist, band leader and only everpresent member Ritchie Blackmore, coinciding with him leaving Deep Purple for the first time. Of Rainbow's many lineups, this one, responsible for the groundbreaking "Rising" album of 1976, is generally regarded as the best. Blackmore himself is recognized as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Following Rainbow's demise in 1984, he took part in Deep Purple's reunion but left them again, permanently, nine years later, after which he has reformed Rainbow on two occasions but mostly been occupied with his folk rock project Blackmore's Night. As for the other members, singer Ronnie James Dio, arguably the most celebrated heavy metal singer ever, moved on from Rainbow to Black Sabbath (three times, including one under the monicker Heaven And Hell) and his own band Dio - another hugely popular and influential heavy metal act. He died of cancer in 2010. Bassist Jimmy Bain joined him in Dio for their most classic releases and, sadly, also died of cancer in 2016. Keyboard player Tony Carey moved to Germany where he to this day enjoys a prolific and immensely successful solo career. Drummer Cozy Powell went on to play with virtually everybody who was anybody on the classic metal scene, including Whitesnake, Michael Schenker Group, Black Sabbath, Gary Moore, Yngwie Malmsteen and Brian May (of Queen fame). He died very prematurely in a car crash in 1998.

Master Ritchie created Medieval Rock. You are spot on about nobody can come even close to him to his musicianship. Each of his riffs and solos are statement from Medieval times. obviously he hired and fired musicians serving his purpose..only he could get away with anything

If you've ever done any Deep Purple, that is Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore who formed Rainbow after leaving Deep Purple. And the great Ronnie James Dio on vocals who later joined Black Sabbath, replacing Ozzy. Rainbow is a great band and this happens to be my favorite song of theirs, but they have a lot of great ones. I hope you do some more of them. A Light In The Black kind of continues the storyline of this song.

Ritchie FN Blackmore! Guitarist extraordinaire with Deep Purple and Rainbow, saw him 4 times in the former and 5 times with Rainbow, he was a beast but with nuance and subtle accents when needed but not many were as powerful as Ritchie, when I saw him in Hartford CT at a large outdoor concert (with Elf and Ronnie James Dio opening and a killer set by Aerosmith) they were loud enough to hear in New Haven and to see a guitar God at work, try You Fool No One from the same tour in 1974 at the California Jam, it is an eye opener and one of the best guitar solos ever. Enjoy! 🎸

Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore formed Rainbow with the band Elf which was led by Ronnie James Dio on vocals. It was Elf minus the guitarist from Elf & Ritchie Blackmore on guitar. This is from Rainbow's 2nd album and a whole new line-up except for Dio. Jimmy Bain on bass, Tony Carey on keyboards and Cozy Powell on drums (Jeff Beck Group, Michael Schenker Group, Whitesnake, Emerson Lake & Powell, Black Sabbath, Tipton Entwistle & Powell). Dio joined Black Sabbath after Rainbow, then formed Dio with Rainbow bassist Jimmy Bain, Black Sabbath drummer Vinnie Appice and Vivian Campbell on guitar, who has been with Def Leppard since 1992. Campbell, Bain and Appice would later on form Last In Line after Dio's death, which was named after the 2nd Dio album Last In Line.

Watching all these old rockers is admirable and I take my hat off to you two for listening to such a diverse range of music. Music is so vast. However, to obtain your honours degree you have to complete your course and education by a complete understanding of the most creative, complex, detailed and just darn clever band who all these musicians look up to and just say...we cant do what they do. To complete your true understanding of this group i will mention, to understand itvis what it is and you cant deny it I implore you to do a double header that will leave you even more amazed than you already are. Then you will realise you have to accept it and embrace it. Of course it can only be QUEEN! i beg you borh to listen to studio only versions of " Bring back that Leroy Brown" and then " you take my breath away" which is Freddie at his best. I became a member to beg you to react to these two and I wont ask for anymore (think i became a paid member to one of your other channels in error). I know you will enjoy the diversity of these two songs ...you can thank me later people!!

That's Ronnie James Dio on vocals, the GOAT and 'Godfather of Metal'.. After Rainbow, he fronted for Black Sabbath, then his solo band 'Dio'. The man's voice was such a GIFT. He could do shit with his voice that was amazing. Chrck out Rainbow, 'Mistreated' LIVE in Munich 1977. Dio should always be enjoyed LIVE.

I've enjoyed this song for many years. Dio, Blackmore and all the members of Rainbow are legends. A few years back I saw this story on the History channel and I immediately wondered if this was the basis for this song. Just food for thought. I have also included the Wiki link. *Armen Firman is the Latinized name of Abbas Ibn Firnas. "According to some secondary sources, about 20 years before Ibn Firnas attempted to fly he may have witnessed Firman as he wrapped himself in a loose cloak stiffened with wooden struts and jumped from a tower in Córdoba, intending to use the garment as wings on which he could glide. The alleged attempt at flight was unsuccessful, but the garment slowed his fall enough that he only sustained minor injuries." Source: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbas_ibn_Firnas
