A true legend who put time into the bands "Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath," and later, his own band. I was fortunate enough to meet Ronnie back in the 80's as a fan twice when he made tour stops in my hometown (Dio with Dokken opening up was the first one). The particular group of friends I ran with back then would go hang out by the band's and artist's tour busses after shows to perhaps get a few autographs or maybe even a signed tour t-shirt. Anyway, my friends goaded me into walking up and knocking on the door of Ronnie's bus. And, who answered the door? THE man himself. Long story short, Ronnie and his guitarist Vivian Campbell, hopped off the bus and took the time to chat with us for almost thirty minutes or so (and, we fired up and shared a little of the "combustible botanicals" we had that just happened to already be rolled up). I gotta say that he was very approachable, personable, easy to talk to, and an all-around kind man...both of em were. Ronnie seemed genuinely interested and questioned us about what our take from the show was, and he said to pull no punches. He didn't have to do any of that because we were just a bunch of kids and fans. THAT humbled all of us...a lot. Just a great man. RESPECT, and RIP my brother...you're sorely missed.

Being the Last in Line refers to being the lost and forgotten generation. A generation that felt unloved and often seen as throw aways. These children came from broken homes and lived through the poor economic times of the 70’s and these were kids that were reared on television and were morally and emotionally bankrupt. Basically, Ronnie was sending a message to those lost and unloved kids in 1984....telling all of us....We’re the Last in Line....See how we shine! Yes there are a lot of religious metaphors used to convey a message of a generation, even though downtrodden, had a voice and wanted to be heard. A generation that was ready and eager for life’s experiences and would take a gamble, no matter the cost.. “ We’re off to the Witch..we may never come home...but the magic that we’ll feel is worth a life time” - a Wizard of Oz type of journey where perhaps Innocence is lost and washed away and the experience or the things we learned, good or bad stays with us.. Ronnie James Dio was an absolute master at metaphorical writing. The rest of the lyrics contain anguishing choices that we all must go through on life’s journey and the swiftness of life is “the hand that writes and quickly moves away” never to be rewritten and it is only during final judgement will we get our answer of Eternal Life or Damnation. One more thing about Ronnie James Dio... He gave the world this symbol ---> 🤘🏼

This song was my first experience with Dio. His official video appeared on the ol Friday Night Videos show 30+ years ago. I thought it was going to be a ballad until his voice kicked into gear. I became a super fan after that. Dio loved to blur the line between good and evil. His first solo album had a demon holding one end of a chain. The other end was wrapped around the neck of a preacher, who was swimming in the pit of hell. He talked about the duality of the appearances. What if the demon was actually the good guy and the preacher was evil? “We Rock” off that same album if a serious Rock Anthem Of course, the album Holy Diver has great songs on it. The title track “Holy Diver” and and not be outdone, “Rainbow in the Dark” it gets a lot airplay, to this day This is just two tracks off two albums “Mistreated”, when he sang with Rainbow as well as “Man on a Silver Mountain” and what Dio song wouldn’t need another anthem so he gives us.”Long Live Rock and Roll”. His Black Sabbath years gave us “Lady Evil”,”Neon Nights, “TV Crimes”, and, of course, “Heaven and Hell”
