Maggie May was released in 1971, and this one was released in 1978. Rod had been front man for different bands and had all kinds of changes, including huge changes in the music industry. They could not have sounded alike - and still have been hits. There are plenty of good artists that didn't make it into the late 70s, and many many more that did not make the jump into MTV videos. Rod survived because he could do lots of things.
