History nerd here, and it's fun facts time for those who want it Fun fact 1 : Catherine of Aragon was actually to be wed to Henry's older brother (Arthur). However, he died a few days after the marriage, making Henry the heir. His father, Henry VII, still wanted to get his son to marry Catherine, although he was like..8 or something. They wanted to keep their alliance going with Spain. At the time, once you're married, well, having another marriage was a no-no. Henry VII used the excuse "Akshually, my son died too early to consume marriage." And it worked. When Henry could marry, they wed. Fun fact 2 : Catherine was a badass. She actually fought wars while pregnant, which might have been the cause for her many miscarriages. I think it was against the Scots if memory is correct. Fun fact 3 : She gave birth to the very infamous Bloody Mary, who was a BIG Catholic and against protestantism and executed any protestants. She also got rid of the Anglican Church during her short reign. Fun fact 4 : Upon divorcing, Catherine joined a covent being the big Catholic she is. Although this fact is to be taken lightly. Fun Fact 5 : Also Henry was said to be very handsome at the begining and when he became King he threw a lot of parties and was very careless with the money however he did give a lot of things to his people...at first that is. Until there was no money left, lmao. Anyways, Catherine rules, I love her, and she was such a badass Queen ong.

More fun facts to add!! After the divorce, Catherine was banished away to a country house and was held there under worsening conditions as time went on. Catherine and Mary were also banned from seeing or writing to each other for years until her death from cancer at the age of 50. All of this was put upon her to try and force her into signing an annulment and recognising Henry and Anne's marriage as legitimate, she never actually gave in and remained adamant that she was the rightful Queen and loyal to Henry. Also the title that Mary got, Bloody Mary, is often deemed as inaccurate as compared to many reigning nobles then she didn't kill that many people, of course this history is written by the winners and therefor wanted her to be seen as evil, and then such given said moniker to evict such hatred.
@Stari275 ай бұрын
You are correct about her rallying the troops and leading them into war against the Scots. The Scots invaded while Henry was fighting a war for France. She was considered to be a brilliant strategist for how she handled the entire situation. She was pregnant at the time, I've seen some sources say that it was with a son, but I'm not sure if there was any proof of that. She had six miscarriages overall
@NiciNeko5 ай бұрын
As a fellow history nerd I have to correct you, Catherine was married to Arthur the 9th of November 1501 and Arthur died the 2 April 1502. Which is why several people discuss that Catherine couldn't possibly be a virgin after months of marriage, especially not in that time where the entire alliance depended on their successful marriage and an heir. But as she swore she was a virgin, Arthur was dead, her Ladies didn't say that the marriage had been consummated, and the Pope granted a dispensation, no one blinked as she married Arthur's brother Henry VIII.
@yf-n77105 ай бұрын
Fun fact about the bible verse: Leviticus does, in fact, say that you would be cursed to have no male children if you marry your dead brother's wife because it's a bad thing to do. However, Deuteronomy, on the other hand, says you that you are *required* to marry your brother's wife if he dies. So uhhh yeah there's some bible inconsistencies for you.
@SpringStarFangirl5 ай бұрын
Okay, so here's an explanation of why Deuteronomy requires it but Leviticus forbids it. Deuteronomy is referring to a situation in which the brother died childless, no stillbirths or miscarriages either. In that case, the marriage is what's called a levirate marriage; it's meant to ensure that the dead live on, and the first child ensuing from this marriage would be considered the child of the brother and his inheritor. (There is a way to get out of this, but I won't get into that here.) The Leviticus verse refers to a situation where the brother's wife _has_ gotten pregnant from the brother.

Long herstory comment for algorithm Catherine of Aragon was a *boss*. There is a story of how once, when Henry was away, the kingdom was attacked. Heavily pregnant Catherine herself rode into battle with her men and managed to drive the attackers away, sending Henry the bloody coat of the defeated leader of the attack. Unfortunately, that child died very soon after he was born. The only child of hers that survived to adulthood was Mary Tudor, also known as Bloody Mary (for burning protestants at the stake for not converting, but that's a whole another story) The part of the song "you got me down on my knees, please tell me what you think i've done wrong" is a reference to an actual thing that happened when Henry was trying to divorce her. Catherine was on her knees and refusing to leave, repeating again and again that she and his brother never consummated the marriage and thus her marriage to Henry is valid, embarrassing Henry publicly. Till the day she died she refused to accept that she was stripped of her rank, despite everything Henry did to disrespect her further. Her tomb was even disrespected for centuries, until recently, where she finally got a proper grand tomb befitting of a queen. The story goes: a young girl named Katherine Waller wrote a letter to the dean of Peterborough in 1883 which said that she has read about what happened to Catherine's grave, and asked "Could not all the Katherine’s of England restore it? I am only a little Katherine, twelve years old; but if all the big Katherines in England gave 10s and the little ones 5s would it not be enough? I enclose 5s and hope that you will accept it as a small beginning". That letter turned into a fundraiser and a few years later Catherine of Aragon got her memorial where it still stands to this day

Fun fact about the line: "And even though you've had one son, with someone who don't own a wedding ring." It's a shady dig at the bass player, lol. It's not elaborated on, in the musical, but ya. In the live show, the 4-member band is on stage in the background, dressed in black bodysuits but also bedazzled. They're named after 4 of the historically notable irl ladies-in-waiting to the queens. - Maria de Salinas on Drums (Catharine of Aragon's LiW) - Joan Meutas on Keyboard (Jane Seymour's LiW) - Margaret "Maggie" Lee on Guitar (Anne Boleyn's Liw) - Elizabeth "Bessie" Blount on Bass (both Catherine of Aragon & Anna of Cleves' LiW) Bessie Blount did give birth to a bastard son by king Henry VIII, while he was married to Catharine of Aragon. The kid was named Henry Fitzroy and the king officially recognized & financially supported him as his illegitimate son. Fitzroy was low-key groomed as a last-resort contender for the throne, if Henry didn't ultimately have a legitimate son. But he also died as a teenager, so it was a moot point, in the end. But, no wonder Catharine is annoyed...Henry didn't keep that particular affair secret at all, nor act ashamed of it, lol. & you can imagine how awkward is was for Bessie to continue be a lady-in-waiting for Catherine, after it became obvious Henry got her pregnant. (And, you have to wonder just how many of the confirmed 'affairs' Henry had, were truly mutually consensual, in the modern context. He was the king after all.)

So fun fact. Most (if not all) of the wives were ladies in waiting or worked in the castle at some point (except for this wife).. you could say Henry had a thing for his ladies in waiting. Also 14:21 the Bible verse reference is about Leviticus 20:21 Says, "If a man takes his brother's wife, it is severe defilement and he has disgraced his brother; they shall be childless"
@SpringStarFangirl5 ай бұрын
The irony is that because Arthur died childless, let alone before consummating the marriage, this would qualify as a levirate marriage under Jewish law. (Obviously they're not Jewish, but they're using verses from our scripture, so I feel validated in saying this.) Levirate marriage means that the nearest male relative (in this case, Henry) is obligated to marry his brother's childless widow and have kids together, and the law then counts their first child together as the child of the dead brother.
@sarahmorris45755 ай бұрын
@@SpringStarFangirlThis is actually really interesting! Someone in another comment mentioned that, but there’s also a verse in Deuteronomy that says you *have* to marry your brother’s widow. The "Daughters are so easy to forget" line is a reference to the fact that, if the monarchy wasn't horribly s-xist, Henry could've stopped with Catherine of Aragon. He actually had MULTIPLE daughters, but daughters weren't accepted as contenders for the throne unless the King was completely unable to produce males (and even then, there was a solid chance the nobility would start a war rather than let a daughter take over). She's making the point of how ridiculous his quest for an "heir" was, because by the time Anne Boleyn was executed he already had TWO. In the most perfect twist of irony ever, one of those daughters ended up being the most successful Tudor ruler. Completely overshadowed both Henry and his dad. Fought through everything standing in her way to be Queen and stay Queen. And that woman was Anne Boleyn's daughter. It's just so perfect. If there is a god, I bet he had a hand in that.

To throw my 2 cents on the "live version vs studio recording" conversation around the song All You Wanna Do, the Samantha Pauly live version does have more emotion and character in it, especially the back half, but this does come with a caveat. Because it has that stronger character emotion in it, the actual singing can suffer a little (singing when crying, laughing, screaming or any other strong emotional response tends to do that). Since your reactions often focus on the character stuff through the songs, this is probably the more preferable version for you and the one that many of the comments are suggesting, but I thought I would try and give a suggestion with a bit more detail for an informed choice rather than leave you with nothing to go on except that one it 'better' than the other.

Henry did have mistresses Elisabeth blunt and mary carey anne boleyn's sister, and catherine was expected to look the other way or turn a blind eye so to speak. That line about being cursed does come from the book of leviticus about widows and marrying your brother's widow. I'm not sure of chapter and verse, but it goes, "If you marry your brother's wife, you uncover your brother's wife and remain childless." Even though she gave birth to mary, henry took that verse to mean no sons to inherit. Henry got a living son through his mistress and in his mind that proved there was nothing wrong with his ability to get sons that it was all catherine's fault and that there was something wrong with her. Hope that helps.

1. Henry Fitzroy (son of the king) is the son mentioned when Catherine mentions "you havd one son with someone who dont own a wedding ring." He had an affair with Elizabeth Blunt, a prominemt member of the court. Before Jane had Edward, there was actually talk that he would be legitimized to become king if Henry died without a male heir. 2. The whole reason that Henry claimed it was okay to marry Catherine in the first place was a verse in the Bible that says that if a mans brother dies and leaves his wife behind with no heirs, he should marry her and any children they had would be his brother's heirs. And the verse they mentioned in Leviticus says that if a man sleeps with his brothers wife it is an unclean thing and they will be childless. 3. The other reason Henry claimed it shoild be okay was because he claimed that his brother Arthur and Catherine had not consummated their marriage because they were too young (Catherine was sixteen and Arthur was fifteen i think). However, historical record shows that a few days after their marriage, Arthur made a joke to some friends that he had been "in Spain", so this claim is likely untrue unless he was just playing macho.

U should react to the live Broadway version! It gives u a better sense of how it actually sounds on stage without the production. Also, the queens vocals in the background are way more prominent

I always think its cool when a rhyme in a song only works because of the accent/inflection that the song is sung in, which I THINK is what's happening with "Moment" and "Annulment" (don't qoute me on that), at least partially

I am incredibly excited about this! Mortius, you are my favorite reaction, youtuber, sending love from canada
@rosehorror14225 ай бұрын
Fun fact: I'm sure its been pointed out to you, but each of the queens singing style is based off a few different artists, I'm really curious if once you've listened to it all youd be able to go back and place where you think their inspirations are for each queen

Honestly wanna si Mortius react to the Live Broadway cast of SIX performing these songs cause I know he'll be shocked to see the actual Choreography of these songs while they're singing it 😭🫶

Sorry if I missed someone saying this, but in the live version when Catherine is down on her knees and asked what she did wrong, there is a longer pause played for humor, in which she is pretending to look at her watch and impatiently giving Henry plenty of time to respond.

It is worth noting that the vocal style, costuming and casting for Catherine of Aragon in the original London production are based upon Beyoncé. Make of that what you will...
@katesullivan47075 ай бұрын
I hope you got interstitals for all of them, they are mostly the funny bits. They all stay on stage the whole time as back up singers but I think the next song is the only interacting one
@squeakSquak5 ай бұрын
you've probably gotten this comment a thousand times but each queen is supposed to represent a different pop artist. like for example, Catherine of Aragon is inspired by beyonce and shakira. Anne boleyn is Lilly allen and avril lavigne. Ill let you guess the rest of the queens lol
