I have been diagnosed with PTSD. This song spoke to me the second I heard it. I am a HUGE Disturbed fan. This was gold to me. I wholeheartedly agree that silence is in fact worse than saying the wrong thing and that void which is left is filled in instantly with everything the mind is biased to, good or not. Dealing with your demons of what you have done in your life, who that effected and how spiritually you have to come to grips it. It's not easy. Faith, a supportive loving family and 2 undeniable friends (along with my 2 German Shepherds) kept me from losing my mind. Today, I am well adjusted, faithful, and grateful for all I have and have been thru. God is truly great. To those on the edge: A permanent solution to a temporary problem is not the answer. Eating a Glock, or an OD is NOT the answer. You are going thru what you are going thru because God created you to be able to withstand anything thrown at you. He would never give you something you can't handle. There is always a lesson to be learned. You might not see it; it might not be obvious but believe it. I have seen the depths of hell and I'm still here. Life experiences I now have had have a lifelong passion to honest discussions about the evil of drugs, the lie that "oh I'm ok to dive after a few drinks" and mental illness IS real. I have loved and lost loved ones to those evils. What I didn't lose is my faith. Because of my faith, I still have my sanity. #GOD #GODISGREAT #PRAY #DISTURBED #MENTALAMANDA #AMERICAFIRST Keep the faith amigos! -PhantomF4G

I struggled for roughly 26 years with severe depression. To make a long story short I turned back to God and started serving in church in youth ministry and after 5 or 6 months I realized that I was no longer depressed. I still have a few minor issues with it here and there but it's finally so much better for the last 20 years. To understand the lyrics, you must know the story behind them. Art Garfunkle went to Columbia in New York. He met a guy named Sanford Greenberg who loved music and literature like Garfunkle and they became great friends and soon roommates. One day Greenberg was at a baseball game and his eyes started failing on him. Soon he was completely blind. Greenberg quit school and went home and fell into a great depression. Garfunkle visited him often trying to convince him to get back to Columbia. Garfunkel told Greenberg to call him "Darkness" in sympathy. With a great deal of help from Art, Sanford did come back to Columbia. Garfunkel helped him to class, filled our forms and papers, etc. One day Garfunkle took Greenberg to Grand Central Station (10,000 people, maybe more.) Garfunkel told Greenberg he forgot he had to be somewhere and up and left him there to find his own way home (over streets of cobblestone...) Greemberg found the right train and in his mind he saw the graffiti on the subway walls. Greenberg finally made it back and bumped into someone who said, "sorry." Greenberg recognized Garfunkel's voice. Garfunkel was with him all the way home. Greenberg got his confidence back, went back to school and when Garfunkle needed money to get his first record cut, Greenberg gave him his last $400. With that Sound of Silence was published. Sanford Greenberg went on to Harvard and Oxford and became a wealthy businessman.

I love the original, and I love this. Fantastic reaction - glad you did the video! The ending, where you have the people who can play the music sailing towards the people who write the music but they haven't met yet, has a seed of hope amid the anger that the warning was ignored (see other comments), but it doesn't show a happy ending. We all need a bit of hope, but not false hope, so I think that was a great balance to strike.

for me this about depression. the video starts with a violent calamity where the whole world was shook. Slowly the people start to pick up the pieces of their life and begin to move on but they are damaged, they are just going through the motions, they still feel their passions but they just cannot connect with others anymore. I was a firefighter and paramedic for 30 years and then a virus dissolved my liver. As I was falling apart everyone just treated me like I was lazy and not caring any more. I ended up alone unable to walk for more than a few minutes before blacking out, I had massive memory issues and just getting to the grocery store was a horrible struggle. This song was massive for helping me dive into myself and connect with the parts of myself that were stuck in the emotions of past traumas and lead them out of the emotional prison they had been shut away in. It did not help with the liver but it stopped me from wasting what energy I had on past emotions and focus everything I had on the current situation. I have been three years alone in one room only getting out once or twice a week for groceries and my doctor died two and a half years ago and I have not been able to get another. I am slowly getting better. It is like the ending of the video, I am on the boat sailing out from my island but there is still a lot of dark ocean to cross before I find land again.
@MentalAmanda4 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your story-it’s incredibly powerful and moving. I can’t even begin to imagine the challenges you’ve faced, both physically and emotionally. Thirty years of service as a firefighter and paramedic is an immense contribution, and it’s heartbreaking that your illness left you feeling misunderstood and isolated when you needed support the most. It’s amazing how music can reach those parts of us that feel locked away, helping us to reconnect with ourselves and find the strength to keep going. I’m glad this song could be that kind of lifeline for you, helping you shift your focus from past pain to the present. You’ve been through so much, and it’s inspiring that you’re still pushing forward, even if it’s just one small step at a time. The metaphor of sailing across a dark ocean really resonates-it perfectly captures that feeling of being in a long, difficult journey with the hope of finding solid ground again. You’ve already shown such incredible resilience, and I hope that land is just over the horizon for you. You’re not alone in this, and I’m here cheering you on as you keep moving forward.
@davidjuby73924 ай бұрын
@@MentalAmanda thank you, it has been a journey. One of the many things a liver does is to convert sugar into glycogen which the body can then move around and use for energy. With very little liver I produce very little glycogen and can blackout if I walk too fast across a parking lot. Due to this I had to maximize what little energy I had and a massive part was reducing or eliminating the energy wasted on emotions like depression, anger, frustration, fear, anxiety...etc. These can literally drain one dry and paralyzed. This song version touched that off by allowing me to go deep inside myself and find and connect with those fractured parts of myself that were trapped in depression and help them move out of it. From there it was a process of connecting with other aspects trapped in other emotions. Anger is the emotion associated with the liver in Traditional Chinese Medicine so that seemed to be a good place to start. When I was born I was part of the Sixties Scoop, where the canadian government declared the Native peoples to be culturally bereft and incapable of raising children. I was taken at birth and put in an orphanage and have never seen my family since. Turns out I have a lot of suppressed rage and frustration and complete despondency. It has been several years sitting alone in a room going inside myself and finding all these fractured and damaged parts of myself and nurture them out and reintegrate them. as horrible as this has been it has allowed me to heal parts of myself that I never would have if the situation had been any different i literally had no choice it was do it or die. sorry for rambling as most of this has little to do with your reaction.

When you opened with the theme of the dangers of isolation, I was reminded of a thought I’ve had before. Many times, when someone has been lost to the rest of us, as in perished, there is often a very deciding factor: they were alone. Whatever the crisis was, there was no one else there who could’ve saved them. So I’ve realized the presence of others is vital at times. Surely the most during those experiences which threaten a level of darkness. And this rendition of the song is dramatic, powerful and outstanding.

I found it really interesting to hear an interpretation that saw the song as being focused on the individual person and their needs. I've always heard it as being more a comment on society at large, with the "sound" of silence being the clamour of millions of people talking past each other. It's noisy, but in terms of meaning it may as well be silence. Thank you for opening my eyes to another possible reading.

First time viewer. I was a bit surprised by your take on the song but it makes sense. As others have already pointed out it is about society's inability to communicate with each other on a meaningful level (and the danger in that) due to the distractions of our daily lives (but primarily technology). Your take on communicating with those going through mental illness is certainly a aspect of that. The song is even more relevant today (with people not being able to look up from their phones and have an actual conversation). In case you are unaware. The lead singer of Disturbed (David Draiman) has had his own issues with mental health and is a huge mental health advocate. On your thoughts including religion. Not religious myself but your thoughts on 'preaching' are very valid for myself although for slightly different reasoning. I got all the usual religious platitudes you mentioned and more in dealing with my anxiety from my family. I repeatedly spoke about not wanting to hear it and if they want me to respect them for their religious beliefs they need to respect that I have no interest and don't want to hear it. My objections to this time and again fell on deaf ears. As a result I completely cut off my family and have not spoken to any of them in over seven years. I will say further on mental illness one of the other major issues I had was expectations from close family and friends just assuming I would snap out of it and be the old me. Those kind of expectations are not only unreasonable but also completely dismissive of something very real I was dealing with. Back to the song. "Silence like a cancer grows", are the most important words in this song for me and is the warning of things to come if the inability to communicate is not corrected. The phrase the silence is deafening' was never truer for me than on 9/11 as the world (and in particular those in North America) watched in stunned silence as the day played out. That said, once again, it makes sense how you interpreted the song and that is also and important message but the true message is so much more vast and important to not just the future of those dealing with mental illness but to all of mankind.

Hello Amanda, I am not sure if anyone has explained the song, due to I am to lazy to scroll and see the other comments :). So yes Simon and Garfunkel song this back in the day. The song was made because during that time, people were more engulfed into media rather than interacting with one another. In one of the stanzas he refers to the neon god they made that is referring to the tv. As today our neon god is our phones and tables.

I enjoyed watching your facial expressions and most especially your eyes as the song progressed. Recognition and some joy were reflected in your face. Just my opinion.

The song The Light by Disturbed is a positive uplifting song. I'm mentally disabled and I listen to it everyday. DEFINITELY hear it. It's amazing how it pulls me up.

Loved it. Great song and cover. In your darkness speak up seek help, Don’t be a statistic. Been in the darkness before and found out that I was the light in my darkness. With seeing my light I was able to speak up seek help. My psychiatrist has been a great help along with some family and a few close friends. Now I’m on a spiritual journey and loving life. Oh I have Clinical Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Life is different now but then better

As a disabled survivor this song resonates deep into my soul. I tell everyone that s******e is a permanent end to a temporary problem. Have done a lot with not only survivors as well as troubled youth. 99% of survivors i talk to said if there was just one person that would have listened it may have changed the outlook and short term thoughts. So i am a big proponent of just sitting and asking if they are ok. No advice no answers just let them talk. All i ever wanted is for family to just shut up and listen. March 18th of 2001 was my day of reconing. I thought things would never change and that was my only answer. Well i found out that when all seems lost there is always a place that was worse. That is why i changed everything and said i am here to be a beacon in the darkness and learned to stop talking stop trying to be something everyone wanted me to be and be who i wanted to be and it lead me to a far better place. Won't go into detail about what i did but if not for great Drs. I would not be able to move and would be paralyzed. Much love for you for getting the message out that in the darkest times someone has a light. Find it. Love to all ❤❤

I love how James Hetfield always uses the lines "permanent solution to temporary problem" and "you are not alone" before singing Fade to Black. Its great care to fans when bringing about very heavy and personal subjects I also love how disturbed brings the same gravitas to the S&G orignal song

Thank you for sharing your powerful story. Your journey and dedication to supporting others are incredibly inspiring. I wholeheartedly agree that sometimes all someone needs is for someone to listen without judgment or advice. Your advocacy and willingness to be that listening ear for survivors and troubled youth can make all the difference in their lives. Your perspective on suicide being a permanent solution to a temporary problem is a vital message I very much support. The insight that just one person's willingness to listen can change someone's outlook is profound. Your decision to become a beacon in the darkness after your own experiences is a testament to your resilience and strength. It's wonderful to hear that you found great doctors who helped you on your journey to recovery, both physically and mentally. Your transformation into the person you wanted to be makes me so happy. Thank you for being a source of light and hope for so many. Your message will undoubtedly resonate with others who are struggling, and your encouragement to find the light in the darkest times is something we all need to remember. Much love to you as well.

@MentalAmanda thank you. For being a beacon of light for those who are afraid to talk to someone. One of my takes why someone will talk to me rather than a professional is that they are afraid if they talk, they will be instantly institutionalized. There are a lot of men especially that as kids we were told not to cry or if you show emotion you are weak. Sometimes my friends who were military don't want to talk to a professional because the military doesn't have the best track record when it comes to mental health. Dax said in one of his lyrics go to war come home get put on a shelf then go to war with thier mental health. As a country we ALL need to be better. That friend you haven't talked to in a while.... call them. You could be the lifeline they need and you or them don't even know it.

I've been hoping you would do a reaction of this song, and I'm glad you picked the music video instead of the live version. I expected that your perspective on it would be right on target - and you surpassed my highest hopes! You instantly understood what the song is all about, and I love what you said about it in terms of faith. I've encountered the same kind of "Religianity" more times than I care to remember. Your insight on this shows a great deal of spiritual maturity, and goes to the heart of what is really SUPPOSED to be fundamental to Christianity; compassionate Christ-likeness. I know I'll almost certainly never meet you in this world, but I pray that I will in paradise. You seem like one of the most genuinely good-hearted people around. Thank you for sharing your amazing self - and for the times you've shared your own pain with complete strangers like me. I knew that sharing our burdens makes them lighter. But you've shown me the next step beyond that: Your sharing of your burdens through this chanel has lightened my own burdens, in spite of my never having shared a single one of my burdens with you. Thank you for that. You have been and are a blessing to me. I feel like I'm supposed to add one more thing: You are also 'enough'. And you're Not 'too much'. ...The twin lies of being 'not enough', yet somehow still 'too much' are some of the most terrible weapons the enemy hurls at us - and especially at women, who he hates more than any man. You are enough, and I'm glad you're my sister. 😇 Take care of your heart

David Draimen is not a particularly religious person, but in his youth he was a classically trained Jewish Cantor. He is the only band member without tattoos in respect for his Jewish family.

Oops! I just heard on your live chat that you're not a believer. Guess I misunderstood. (No shock there; that happens all the time!) I've made it a conscious decision ever since I became a believer (~12 years ago) to not try to push my beliefs on other people, and I hope that's not how my words came across. This is the first live chat I've ever watched, by anyone. Laughing myself silly watching you two try to moonwalk! Glad you can laugh at yourself - and aren't afraid to do so in front of the world.

This song to me is like the urban abyss we have all fallen into, and that brings to mind that old adage where it says if you stare into the abyss long enough then be prepared for the abyss to stare back.

If there's a Distubed song you need to watch/hear, It's my "power song". Disturbed - The Light. My ultimate low point was about 9 years ago. I was waiting for a (now) ex to have "the conversation" about our future after being with this person for nearly 3 years. It was my lowest point and I had never felt so low, powerless or alone. Whilst waiting for them to arrive for said conversation, I put on the rock TV channel we had at the time and Disturbed - The Light came on and it gave me all the strength and power I will ever need in life. To this day, if anything tries to derail me, I will just listen to this song and know where I have been, where I was, and how I can come back from anything and give life my all. If there's ever a song you "Need" to hear/see in life, it's this song.

A very original response, tying the lyrics to the lack of listening/not listening, feeling alone, etc. Typically, and in my case, it's really about the silence of society in the face of injustices, etc., but I think it works beautifully the way you approach it.

You nailed it on this one. Often I try to talk to my wife open up and be vulnerable, I usually get silence. She either does not know how to respond or does not care to ,haven't figured out which. I have tried to confront her about it but she just shrugs her shoulders and gives me more silence. I have been to professional counseling and am on the road to getting better. Just to reiterate the fact that something is better than nothing. I understand she may not know what to say but saying nothing just leaves a big void and makes me feel completely unimportant. Which makes no sense, because I was there for her while she went through depression herself. So she should have a grasp of what I'm going through and feeling. Anyway thank you for your reaction always good😊

This song was first released in 1964, the album didn’t sell well. The audio producer loved it so much he went behind the duo’s back and added a band in the back. Not only did it become a #1 after he did that, but the song may be the most covered song by bands in history, minimum top 5. Paul Simon never shared any of those covers in his social media until this one. They both got to meet each other, Paul’s attitude was, I’m retired, this is your’s now, thanks for carrying the flame. I’m paraphrasing, but that was the gist.

Simon and Garden owl sang this song in the late 1960's. I was depressed and an alcoholic for many years, and hid it for years. On July 31, 1999 I stopped drinking and got help for the depression. I fight the depression still...as I still don't feel my wife of 24 years still doesn't understand me. Being an artist is very difficult, as I often feel like my wife doesn't even like me, nor my artwork! Try Disturbed's song "Hold Onto Memories".... it's amazing!

Walking a lonely highway, a lone wolf I have become. In my darkest hours, I saw a figure and a shining light. As I got closer, I realized that the figure was me staring down the hole leading to Helheim, feeling like Freddie Mercury screaming at the top of my lungs. I want to break free as I fall to my knees, asking the all father to get Hel and Loki out of my head. Saying, Give me the strength to fight my battles so I can enter the great hall of corpses, for those who fight and those who fall, Valhalla will call to the great hall of corpses, where the trumpets will sound in their honor and their fallen brothers and sisters will rejoice. It's really hard for me to talk to most people in my town because I'm the only pagan in the whole town, but at least I have you and the wolf pack, so thanks for being there for me.

Paul Simon wrote "The Sound of Silence" in response to a moment of unrest and sadness - the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Simon was feeling anxious because he couldn't come up with any new song ideas, and the barren landscape outside his window only added to his feelings of despair. However, he found inspiration in the form of a simple guitar chord progression, which eventually turned into the haunting tune that has become synonymous with quiet reflection. According to Simon, the song is about the inability of people to communicate with each other, especially on an emotional level. Even though the song was written over 50 years ago, its themes still resonate today, making it a timeless classic.
