Same - born '74. Have to agree ... although I will say things have been going downhill since the millennium, I can personally pinpoint it to everyone getting smartphones around 2010 when things really started going to shit.

This is from 1985. Congratulations on your discovery. This is a great song. I’m glad you like it. It’s part of the British new wave during that era a lot of great songs from great bands out of Britain during that time. Other band you might want to check out new order the cure, the smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen. Should I recommend songs by each of those bands blue Monday by New Order just like Heaven by The Cure there’s a light that never goes out by The Smiths. and lips like Sugar, by Echo and the Bunnymen man there’s so many and yes, this is the style of music from the breakfast club. Oh, and there’s also a psychedelic for never mind I’ll just go on and on if I don’t check out now…

Tears For Fears were formed in 1982 in Bath, England. This song is from their second album in 1985, it hit the top of the billboard chart in the US, the follow up, Shout, also hit number 1, their 3rd release in the US is called Head Over Heels, which is just as good as the previous two hits, only hit number 3. It was 1989 before Tears For Fears released their 3rd album, the totally brilliant Seeds Of Love, which for my money is their masterpiece, check out Woman In Chains and Sowing The Seeds Of Love from that album. The duo then had a bitter split, before getting back together in 2004 and releasing the aptly titled Everybody Loves A Happy Ending. The duo still tour every year and in 2022, they released a new album called The Tipping Point, check out the title track which is about the death of Roland's wife in 2017.

The thing I miss about the late 80s the most was how much smaller the world was. People didn't get as upset about things that didn't actually affect them. People were the same, they just didn't know as much. As they say, ignorance is bliss. The waves of technology that came along after this period of life brought a very mix bag of things. You can choose to see the positive, but it's undeniable that today we're bombarded with negativity and, as you say, debauchery. Back then, the things people talked about were the things around you, people were more focused on their home and their community by far. People seem sadder today. We have all these entertainment sources, but along with that we have all the death and horror and immorality of the entire world dropped right in front of our eyes, all day every day. You could have lived and died without seeing it, without knowing it, and nothing would change. It would happen anyway, and you'd be just as powerless to stop it all, but just not knowing... it was nice. Hot take maybe, people will call it "privilege", but what does knowing do or change except make you sadder?

Every grocery store I went into was playing 80s music, I had been living in TX for 30 years so Country was everywhere, so to suddenly hear all of these songs from HS everyday was like being thrown into a time warp.

Life back then was much better. I remember renting a really nice 2 bedroom furnished apartment utilities included in a nice part of town for $250 a month. I had money to pay my bills and go on vacation. Crime was really low. People sat on their porches in the evening and chatted with their neighbors. We had block parties....without gunfire. It was nice. I wish it could go back to that.

Side note: guy playing second guitar with longish dark hair is Bob Geldof, he has arranged some of the biggest charitable concerts in the past thirty years, like Live Aid. It’s what he did after performing live. Gen X was very much a message of music time. Songs meant something, this song was about protecting the environment. “[you] turn on Mother Nature“. Life was much better in the 80's if you were young. We didn't have social media or mobile phones. We had adventures and spent most of the time outdoors playing. We would climb trees and challenge each other by climbing buildings like the school roof. We had the freedom to do whatever we wanted to do and our parents didn't have a clue. But this experience made us confident, independent and fearless.

The song is more or less about the human nature to have control and power, the lengths people will go to to get there, and the disregard of the consequences. The upbeat tempo of the song is very counter to what it's about. A great song that's timeless because of it's enduring topicality.

I know that car is an Aston-Martin, but I don't know what year. Looks like a DB6 convertible. It's very different to the modern Aston-Martins. They were rare at the time, hand-built for the luxury market, for the Yuppies of the 1980s, and they're still rare, but a bit more numerous today. I know Top Gear used to drool over them all the time. TFF were a middle class band from the English suburbs, pretty well-off background, went to private schools, but I still doubt they could buy an Aston Martin. Probably leased it for the video in Arizona like you said.

Well I’m a child of the 80s lol. I don’t want to burst your bubble too much but you might have too pristine an image of what dating was like back then. I think the time you’re thinking of was basically the 50s, when boys asked girls to go steady and then they got married and women stayed home and raised kids and well, many of them became alcoholics because they were so bored. But anyways, then came the 60s with “sex drugs and rock and roll” - my mom’s generation. They basically went crazy and experimented with psychedelics and lived completely different lifestyles than their parents. Then the 70s with the disco scene, skin was in - you think women dress scantily now - just look at the hot pants and halter tops of the disco era. In the 80s, *ocaine use and money were the vices of the day. But I love all of it - there is no golden era - just people living.

A great song from a great band. I was born in 1970 and experienced the 80's from 10yrs old till 20yrs old. Im a real child of the 80's. Lol Societal changes are actually glaring in the video. I think for the better. If you didnt know, these 2 men were gay. It was fairly obvious to most people but it just wasnt discussed much. During this time period there was a wave of artists that were also gay.. and it was almost never talked about. Sorta social taboo to discuss. It wasnt uncommon at all for an 80's music video to have the male lead of a band appear to be straight in their video. Frequently with a female lead in the video to appear as a straight couple even though the male was pretty well known to be gay. So, while this song sounds so much like happier times, its also a reminder of how far along the gay/lesbian movements have come in that sexual orientation isnt as big a deal anymore.

Dude life was definitely better back then. Although we've all become dependent on technology now and can't imagine living without it, I believe we were better off in many ways before there were cell phones, Facebook, the internet etc. You weren't exposed constantly to so much negativity. At least where I was everyone was proud of their country and was very patriotic. Heck at the movie theater they would play the national anthem before the movie started, and everyone would stand up in respect for the flag and our country. There was not so much hate and speaking about God was pretty common. Most people seemed to believe in him. I can only honestly recall one teacher that I had who was a liberal when I was in high school, and he never attempted to instill his ideology into our young minds. For graduation we were required to take a call called Americanism vs Communism. Too bad that cut that out long ago, because there seem to be a lot of the younger generations now running around thinking communism is a great thing. Also there was something extra special about your favorite song coming on the radio, because if you didn't have the 45 or the album yet, you weren't going to hear it. Ha! I also liked how the radio announcers always said the name of a song and who sang it after each song played. Irritates me that they don't do that anymore. I think that's disrespectful to the music artists. Duh gonna hush now, I've gone on too too long,. Keep it real dude, you're way smarter than any liberal out there.

You see they're not driving super-fast on the expressway--1985 was the year interstate highway speeds were transitioning from 55 to 65 mph. What was life like? Memory is a funny thing--I miss the 80s, but we have the benefit of knowing how things turned out. At the time, there was a Cold War and an arms race going on. Nuclear war was the fear the whole world over--and when the Soviets accidentally shot down that airliner with the congressman on board was one of those times when it seemed like sooner or later it was going to happen. Nevertheless...there was less sex on TV and in the movies and music, as you wondered. A whole lot of people that I miss were still in the world. My siblings and I read a lot of books--we got 5-ish channels over the air on TV (NBC and CBS, and ABC and 2 PBS stations on the UHF dial) and there was no internet (my dad got an Apple IIgs computer in 1987 because he was a teacher, and he used the Applesoft spreadsheet as a gradebook). And it would be nice if marriages all lasted then, but the divorce rate was sky-high. My siblings and I were what they called "latch-key kids" for much of the 80s, because our parents weren't home from work when we got home from school.
