This is definitely one of my favorites, I love The Dells and do have a rabbit hole to go down. I have all of their music and have seen them multiple times in concert along with The Dramatics and The O’jays . The Dells were also called The Grandfathers. The only 2 still living are the two slim ones back in the early 70’s that same 2 were robbed and shot and left for dead but they survived. I met the lead singer Marvin late one night at a bbq house called Lems on the south side, he thought no one would recognize him but I saw him and his driver and got his autograph, this was in 95 he was so gracious.

Some people think The five heartbeats movie is about The Dells but it’s not it’s about several groups that Robert Townsend interviewed and besides that the Dells never lived in New York and none of them are related like the Townsend and Leon characters were in the movie.

Though the original version by The Dells was recorded in February 19, 1965 and released shortly thereafter, this was the remake they recorded in 1968 after their original tenor left and was replaced by Johnny Carter. They also recorded "Oh What A Night" twice, though the best version of it was when they did it live on 'Soul!"

They started in the 50's. No one matches the voice of Marvin Jr., he's one of the main voices you hear. The other voice is Johnny Carter, the high voiced one. Get the actual video so you can see the men behind it. All but 2 are dead now. Marvin Jr. dying in 2014, & Johnny Carter dying in 2004, I believe, & finally Carl Barksdale dying in 2015, I think. By the way, that voice that held that note was Marvin Jr. I don't know of anyone else could do what he did.
