This is definitely one of my favorites, I love The Dells and do have a rabbit hole to go down. I have all of their music and have seen them multiple times in concert along with The Dramatics and The O’jays . The Dells were also called The Grandfathers. The only 2 still living are the two slim ones back in the early 70’s that same 2 were robbed and shot and left for dead but they survived. I met the lead singer Marvin late one night at a bbq house called Lems on the south side, he thought no one would recognize him but I saw him and his driver and got his autograph, this was in 95 he was so gracious.

The Dells are credited with the 1-2 lead vocal approach, one high and softer, one strong and full with a raspy edge. Many other groups adopted it later, as mentioned before - Stylistics, Dramatics, O'Jays and Enchantment, to name a few. They started in the 50's. No one matches the voice of Marvin Jr., he's one of the main voices you hear. The other voice is Johnny Carter, the high voiced one. Get the actual video so you can see the men behind it. All but 2 are dead now. Marvin Jr. dying in 2014, & Johnny Carter dying in 2004, I believe, & finally Carl Barksdale dying in 2015, I think. By the way, that voice that held that note was Marvin Jr. I don't know of anyone else could do what he did.
