So glad you reacted to this live version of it. It's amazing. Blows me away every time I watch it. There's nothing like old-school soul music.

They are one of the few groups who still sound like they did when we heard them from day one. They are also one of the groups who sounded the same live as they did in the studio! That is magic!

The movie 'The Five Heart Beats' was loosely based on the Dells. When the Dells first tried to get a contract they went to Chess Records and Marvin Jr said Phill Chess pulled him aside and said listen Marvin, I like you but you don't have the voice for singing and Marvin tried to quit the group. They went across the street to VeeJay Record in Chicago and got signed. I think it was Gamble and Huff that tried to get Marvin from the Dells but found that singer was the drummer, Teddy Pendergrass in the group that they were currently working with, in the group Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes!

The mighty Dells, this is pure soul, not R&B, there is a difference! Growing up listening to the Dells and other soul singers made me appreciate the fact that I was blessed to grow up in the best music era, ever! (60's and 70's)

Gamble and Huff wanted Marvin Junior to leave the Dells they said they never heard a voice like Marvin Junior. Later on they produced this group who the singer started out as a session drummer. It was Teddy Pendergrass so Gamble and Huff ended getting their Marvin Junior.

This live performance was filmed on a classic 70s show Soul! (there's a documentary that you must see). This one is arguably better than the original version, which is 🔥! FYI The Dells are responsible for the one/two punch in male vocal groups and they began recording in the late 50s.

Same song live 28 yrs. later...Considering all are older, they did pretty good...Someone in the background sounds off..JMPO...I could be wrong...Johnny put on some weight, and I think that may affect him hitting the high notes...However, good performance for older gentlemen...kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYmpe62Vh9uMha8
