This is another fabulous group from the 50's-60's. This was the time of classy romantic heartfelt songs. Sadly they don't make music like this anymore. They had so many great hits such as "Only You", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "Enchanted", "(You've Got) The Magic Touch", "My Prayer", "Twilight Time", "Harbor Lights" etc.

Twilight Time and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes are 2 Platters songs you must listen to. 1950's 60's. Smooth as can be. An A Class group. I recommend the Mills Brothers from the same timeline. Their style is mellow. Cab Driver, Glow Worm, Basin Street Blues (live with the Boston Pops video. This is a surprising and unique treat)). And a quartet with Dean Martin on his tv show singing Paper Doll and Up A Lazy River.((live video) There is so much great music from the 40's-60's We used to see these amazing groups on tv.

Great reaction! This one was before my time, but I must’ve heard it in my childhood, because I can’t recall not knowing and loving this song. I think when you’re looking at clips from this time period (sort of the transition from big band/crooner to rock ‘n roll), the audience considered it respectful to sort of sit quietly and attentively, and just listen and enjoy the performance.

I had never heard this, but I THINK it's the song Chrissy Hynde named The Pretenders after! Some interview I heard with her back when I'll Stand By You came out, she got the bog standard "so where'd you get the band name," but she launched into this amazing story about meeting this tough old biker in a dive, and at some point, she asked what his favorite song was, and he got up & put The Great Pretender on the jukebox. Then he just sat back down, closed his eyes, and listened, swaying back & forth, and she was just watching him listen & thinking that yeah, that was what she wanted to do. To move people like that. So she named her band The Pretenders, so that she could never lose sight of the point. I always regretted not catching the name of the band, though Thanks for that, man.

we had some great music back in the 1950s, but we rarely got to see them - no videos, maybe an occasional TV appearance on Dick Clark's Bandstand or Ed Sullivan. So this is a new treat. And then along came Elvis. I never could understand people being upset saying that Elvis 'sounded Black.' There were lots of wonderful Black singers back then, even Nat King Cole with his own TV show.

A as in at. You know - a platter, a large plate for serving food. Platter is also slang for a record. So I suppose you could say The Platters were serving hit records back in the day. One of the best groups from the doo wop and early rock & roll era who scored crossover #1 hits on the pop and r&b charts like The Great Pretender at a time when music was often segregated on the radio, which of course was the main source for hearing new music back then.

It has two Ts, so it’s platters… With an a like in “hat”…. and it comes from the word plate… But a platter is a large plate that you put all the food on to get dished out onto each persons plate… But in this case, it refers to the record platter that turns to play the disc.
