The huge controversy from this song is that they used a legally obtained sample of the violins from a 1965 instrumental cover version of a1960 Rolling Stone Song (The Last Time). Although the lyrics were 100% orignial and The Stones thief of an ex manager Allen Klein sued saying they didn't obtain all of the necessary sample rights and as a result his company got sole publishing rights while Mick Jagger & Keith Richards were given 100% writing credits for the song. Everyone made millions of dollars from the song and subsequent licensing of the song to commercials, television shows, movies, etc. Even the guy who recorded the instrumental (the sample they paid for) made money yet The Verve made absolutely nothing. The group eventually broke up. Nearly 20 years later in 2015 Mick Jagger & Keith Richards returned the rights back to the Richard Ashcroft, The Verve's lead singer and songwriter. Everyone involved: Allen Klein, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Andrew Oldham were all thieving leeches but at least Jagger and Richards finally saw the light Original song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHvRnpSYbMtknqs Orchestral Cover: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4rVnZ-cdrKqfqs

This lyric sums up the entire song .. "Cause it's a bittersweet symphony this life Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die." Awesome... this is why we need young people to keep writing cause as you get older, the angst and feelings die along with our bodies.

I’m around the 40 years of age. When this came out I was you guy’s ages. I have sentimental feeling toward this song. Reminds of some good old times in the 90s in England. Also the instrumental of this tune was regularly used for many years ( May still be) for the England international football matches during half time and full time in-between commercials

Guys... virtual insanity by Jamiroquai. Amazing video alone, but def a banger.
@benabel73264 жыл бұрын
The orchestration comes from a Rolling Stones song. They sued the Verve and had to give them all song royalties, until a few years ago when Rolling Stones gave them back all their earnings.Other great songs of theirs are "This Is Music", "'The Drugs Don't Work" & "'Sonnet" The Verve were one of the biggest Britpop bands of the 90's along with Oasis, Blur, Pulp & Suede. (Wait I get the hate for lumping them all as Britpop).
@aarongoldstein76144 жыл бұрын
The Stones song in question is "The Last Time".
@diamondstud3224 жыл бұрын
The lawsuit actually didn’t have anything to do with The Rolling Stones, though. The bit Ashcroft sampled was from an orchestral version of Stones songs (with Stone’s approval). Ashcroft got approval for the sample, but when the song hit big, some money guy involved in the record company sued saying they used more than was agreed, and the Verve couldn’t make any money from the song. 20 years later (just this year or last), Ashcroft has the rights to the song back, and a lot of the money that the song earned over the years.
