God damn man this is a breath of fresh air. Watching you roast this song was so funny and I'm a huge fan of this song and tool generally. I'm sure you're gonna get a bunch of comments taking you too serious but this was hilarious. So many other guys who do the "black guy reacts to white music" just play it up, and it's always the same old songs too. Thanks for this.

TOOL is my absolute favorite band by a mile. However I absolutely loved your reaction. I actually laughed out loud when you were just staring into the camera waiting for the bridge (the instrumental portion) to be over. Glad to see you aren't just trying to give the TOOL army they reaction you think they want. You should try The Pot though, off their 10,000 Days album. That has more of a beat and it's more rock/metal than this song (although I love this song too, especially the baseline).

Tool is very much an Experimental/Groove/Prog Rock type band. They tend toward complex timings and play with different layers to the music. You are probably having issues finding "the rhythm" to vibe with because there are several overlapping rhythms (each instrument might be on a different time signature) that play with and against each other for different effects during the song. The vocals are also like another instrument, and while the lyrics have meaning too, the vocal track is treated like another layer to the song.

Man I love Tool and I love this song, and your reaction had me cracking up. Taste is subjective, nobody's wrong. It's really interesting to observe how much difference a person's musical experiences and background can affect the way a track hits them. I grew up with pop radio, but my dad also made sure I heard and understood a lot of classical stuff too, like Mozart type stuff. Purely instrumental for the most part, because Dad wasn't so into operas. So to me, the long instrumental interludes don't sound like a break in the song, so much as a moment to focus on other parts of it besides lyrics. The complex time signatures are impressive and hypnotic, instead of chaotic. You're right about Tool not being music you can easily nod along to! I think it's great that you're intentionally stepping out of your comfort zone. Keep it up.

I really loved your comment about not being able to bob your head to this song. Here's a quote from the wikipedia entry on this song that's pretty relevant: ""Schism" is renowned for its use of uncommon time signatures and the frequency of its meter changes. In one analysis of the song, the song alters meter 47 times." But, yeah, Tool has a very wide variety of music but their most well known songs are all "moody" more than they are "bops". For instance, "Sober" is one of the most intense explorations of addiction you'll ever get in musical form but it's not really something you can just put on at the gym, in my opinion.

Love the vibe of the channel, but may I suggest a few things. Perhaps either before or after listening, look up and read just a bit about the band or song and share your thoughts on that as well. It would provide context and I for one would be interested in your broader thoughts with that supplemental information included. I would also encourage you to have the lyrics on hand, and give your interpretation of them if the song is ambiguous. Hearing people's interpretations of songs, based on their own life experiences is often the most interesting part of the "first time hearing" format. Also, I appreciate how you are listening to the songs, and not reacting to the music video. Many times the reviewers will have their opinions based on what is really a different visual medium than the strictly auditory experience. Also, (to your joke) you can trust me... my credit score is 823.

They made this song specifically with odd time signatures, just to fuck with people trying to bob their heads to the rhythm. It’s hard for people who are new to their music but if you break it down into sets of 3 then 2 you can kinda get a swing to it instead of actually trying to follow the beat.

@@HollywoodRobTV except this isn’t one of Tool’s (or Danny Carey, the drummer’s) “bad songs”. The song doesn’t use a “standard” 4/4 time like the vast majority of most music. 4/4 time is 4 beats to bar/measure, and each beat is a quarter note in length, usually counted like ONE two Three four (One and Three are the strong beats in regards to emphasis in the musical pulse, with One being stronger than Three, and Two and Four are the downbeats and are “weaker” in comparison. Rock and hip hop, both evolving from jazz and blues (and ultimately from west African rhythms) tend to put emphasis on the downbeats, or “backbeat” to create dynamic rhythmic groove (it’s why pop music grooves and classical doesn’t). Less used is 3/4 time (3 quarter notes to bar, most commonly seen as a waltz, and counted like ONE two three ONE two three. One strong beat and two weak beats. It has a lilting and kinda falling sway to it. 3/4 and 4/4 (and the rarely seen 2/4) are called “simple” time signatures. “Compound” time signatures are things like 6/8, or 6/4, or 9/8. They can kinda feel like a fast waltz, but instead of a falling feel, they have a swingy feel. 6/8 is used in a lot of pop songs that have more of a folksy vibe instead of a dance vibe. And then there’s “complex” time signatures, or “odd” time. 5/4, 7/4, 7/8, 11/8, etc. These don’t have a regular pulse within a given bar, instead being built around divisions of notes, and it’s up to the musicians to choose where the emphasis is, and thus where the strong and weak notes are, to create the pulse of the music. If you’re not familiar with these signatures and their pulses, it can feel “off-beat” because you’re expecting the cycle to end either before or after it actually does, compared to simple or compound time. They can be disorienting, often on purpose, but they can also be hypnotic, again on purpose. With all the divisions and subdivisions within the measure, musicians are more able to explore polyrhythms (which are simply two different rhythms played at the same time, only coming together after several cycles). Anyway, the point is that Tool uses lots of polyrhythms and complex/odd time signatures in their music, and frequently changes the time signature from bar to bar, so it’s not “easy” to listen to. That doesn’t mean a song by them is trash anymore than a generic pop or r&b song is trash for being not complex enough. Taste is taste, and everything is subjective. If you’re willing to have an open mind and listen to some music that purposely steps outside the box of formality, then maybe try Tool again. Many will say “The Pot”, but also “46 & 2”, or “Sober”. These are in standard “simple” 4/4 time for the majority of the song.

There is a beat, but a deliberately different usage than most songs. TOOL is known for abnormal or uncommon time signatures; "Schism " starts out at a 12/8 time but then goes to a 5/8 and then to a 7/8. Hope that helps. Loving the channel. The closer you stay to the Rage / TOOL vibes, and the further you stay away from Linkin Park style stuff, the better your listening experience and channel will be. TOOL Army member here, and I'm LOLing at this honest reaction! Seriously appreciate your genuine response and humor! TOOL =. polyrhythms (odd time signatures), soundscapes (art rock genre) and progressive (prog) rock (they build music up slowly; in literature we would call this rising action that results in a climax), and musical intricacy/technicality (their music strongly emphasizes musicianship wherein we get a lot of those long lyric-less parts). I would classify them as an acquired taste - love that you are 100% honest here I'm honestly ded - listening to new genres and bands/artists is always appreciated, and we never expect everyone to love everything! This is mostly a song for people who are interested in music theory to begin with. The verse alternates between 5/8 and 7/8 literally every measure and because of what the beat does it's hard to simplify and call it 12/8 instead. The bridge and chorus also have their own times and time switches. I listen to this song regularly and I can't easily count the bridge.

Glad I saw your The Pot reaction first - as others have said, this is one of the least approachable "popular" Tool songs for folks not familiar with them. There's no "pocket" to groove to so the time signature is just going to distract from the artistry of a song like this. Tool has a huge catalog of excellent stuff with tunes that might give you the groove your looking for. AEnema and Eulogy are favorites of mine, but Vicarious (same album as The Pot) is a a good one too.

I love how you call it devil music when rock very much has been labeled throughout the years as “satanic” … but this song and genre is very much “trippy” more for the mental journey

The Dunning-Kruger effect describes a phenomenon where low skilled people lack the skills to even recognise their own shortcomings. Music is a language and you’ve been listening to nursery rhymes for most of your life. Time to level up.

If I could give you any advice on trying to get into tool, start chronologically. Start with their best songs from each album in order of release. When I first got into tool, (I think they’d put out 4 albums.) But I didn’t really get into the more recent albums at first. I had to grow to appreciate them. But also not everyone likes the same music. I really dislike a lot of artists other ppl hail as great. Ppl love songs I just can’t get into and I love songs others seem to hate. Even artists I like I often dislike 1/2 their songs. Also fyi tool fans tend towards being super intense. Sometimes obnoxiously so. I think we can forget that good ppl can disagree and all art is subjective. Some ppl love landscape paintings, I think they’re mad boring. Some ppl love Celine Dion and while I respect her vocal ability I don’t particularly enjoy her voice and I really don’t like her songs. It doesn’t mean they’re bad, it just means Celine Dion is not for me.

Love the honesty! You should come back to it after you get sucked into more tool. This song changes time signatures something like a billion times. It can be a bit much for a newbie :) Given your reaction, you should start with their older stuff first. You'll find some great groovy, funky, aggressive stuff in tool. Maybe 46&2 or Aenima next?

I love your genuine reaction to not knowing music theory. Timing is what you construct it as. Not all timing is 4/4 or 8/8. This is the true beauty of the artform of music at its best. You are basically knowledgeable of paint by numbers, yet watching a master painter.

I'm not surprised you bounced off Tool. If you don't immediately vibe with prog rock, it's like running into a brick wall. And if you dive into the instrumentation, Tool especially is music for turbo nerds. How many comments on this video are talking about time signatures and shit? 🤣

Duuuuuuuude you did not give this song a chance!!!! You cut it off right where it really gets amazing and where it was gonna start to make sense to you!!! A schism is a division or separation between two entities; discord- a loss of harmony or peace. Go back and read the lyrics, and feel the chaos and despair in the music itself. God, all these years later, this song still pulls my heart and guts in all different directions and leaves me emotionally exhausted and on the verge of tears after it's over and I'm gasping for breath once I'm no longer singing it at the top of my lungs. I'm so sad you didn't let it play all the way through! 😭😭😭

I’ve just started watching this playlist from the beginning today and I’m loving it! I haven’t looked ahead to see if you do, but I really hope you give TOOL another chance. I NEVER would have recommended Schism as an introduction to them. Especially to you seeing your reactions so far. I almost always start people off with Ænema. In my opinion it’s the most “poppy” and approachable song they do. LOVED your honest reaction to this song though hahaha! That long stare into the camera killed me! 😂

As someone who loves this song, many other songs with odd time signatures, and Tool as a band overall, this review was absolutely hilarious. Your feelings about it are totally valid and fine, but your absolute deadpan look and commentary sent me. Thank you for your honesty; I hope you find more songs to your liking!

Seconded, The Pot is a much better place to start with them, it's got groove and funk and catchy rhythm out the wazoo and is an all-out banger. A lot of Tool's stuff can get really abstract and cerebral and math-y, which granted is why a lot of people like them, but it's not a style that a many people connect with.

That's what's wrong with today's youth and music, they were brought up with no talent computerized crap and when they finally hear a good real band who knows what they're doing they don't understand what they're hearing, they want lyrics to be simple they want the music to be basic and if it's not simple and basic they get confused and scared. Sad.

Hey man, chill. Guy had an honest reaction. Give him other songs to listen to, don't write him off. You may also want to look into more songs made by present-day artists, there are some real gems. Talent is timeless and so is lack of talent, every generation has both. I'll make some suggestions if you want.
