I don't know what I can say about Tori other than how profound an impact she had on my life during my late teens/early twenties. Little Earthquakes was and still is a top tier album of all time by any genre, period. Even if you don't react to the full album for your channel you simply must listen to it end to end. She's had quite a long career so there's a lot of songs to recommend: Silent All These Years, Precious Things, Flying Dutchman (personal favorite), God, Sugar, and her cover of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit are all good places to start.
@Wungolioth
@Wungolioth 10 ай бұрын
Just a little aside, Flying Dutchman, also a personal favorite, make sure to listen to the version from the Little Earthquakes Deluxe 25th anniversary release, there was a remastered version that came out in the early 2000s that was done poorly, the new version restores from that. Sorry to nitpick, but I'd hate for anyone to stumble on the wrong version.

I remember back in the 90's Tori was somehow universally loved among the metal community. Myself included. I'd go to parties and listen to Slayer and Cannibal Corpse all night. Then late at night someone would throw on Tori to wind down the evening and absolutely no one would complain. Tori was metal with a piano. Raw and real. I recommend her live performance of the song "Me and a Gun". It's not an easy listen. But it's incredible.

Sooo glad you found tori amos. It's always better to listen to her live as she's so creative and interesting. Here's right off the top of my head some of my favorite live performances. 1. "Crucify" Montreux 1991 2. "corn flake girl" at PBS Soundstage in chicago 2003 3. "Precious Things" Live session 1998. You may want to have the lyrics up on Precious Things as she's really experimenting with her voice and the lyrics can be difficult to fully understand. I've never looked them up and I still don't know the lyrics to this song, but who cares, it's just a wonderful ride with her and her very talented band.

You said it perfectly - Control and restraint. Tori could take the same song and the emotional journey would change, entirely depending on her performance mood at the time. Her live concerts were always mesmerizing and captivating. As a massive Kate Bush fan, I can say that Yes - a lot of Kate fans adore Tori as well. Tori Amos is an absolute force. Influenced by Kate, Tori is similar yet completely different. Where as Kate is an absolute technical genius of performance art, Tori will take you on THE most raw, emotional journey of your life. *FYI - Her first solo album "Little Earthquakes" is on my short list of absolute top tier masterpiece albums. Even if you don't react to it - DO NOT SKIP LISTENING TO THE ENTIRE ALBUM "LITTLE EARTHQUAKES". Then go look up every live Tori performance you can watch. Even if it is the same song but from a different tour. Seriously ... you WILL be pulled in.* I made it my business to see every early Tori Amos concert (near enough for me to drive to) from the very beginning of her solo career. She started in small venues, very often just her and a piano. As her popularity grew, so did her concert halls, stage size, and back up band. I think I preferred the early days with just her and her piano. Her performances were more emotional back then and indescribably intimate. I often sat very close to the small stage back then (often about 15 feet away from her).

If you get a chance, look around for some of the live performances of "Caught A Lite Sneeze." She did it on MTV Unplugged for one and for that album's tour she would play the piano and harpsichord at different points in the song, going back and forth between the two DURING the song (there was a mic on top of each instruments - she even had a transition she did where she went slowly from one mic to the other, controlling her voice and volume and being a capella before fully turning and playing the other instrument) At one point I saw her playing BOTH piano and harpsichord at the same time. It was mind-blowing.

There are so many Tori Amos songs you need to hear! While your at it, Ani Difranco - anything (especially anything off "Living in Clip") You hit the nail on the head regarding the control she has...singers like Tori Amos, Ani Difranco, Paul Rodgers, David Draiman have such control of their instrument - pure talent, no gimmicks or gadgets. Always dynamic and make it look easy.

I "inherited" listening to Tori Amos from my older sisters, but I definitely credit Tori with being one of the artists in the 90s and 2000s who made it plain to me that an artist can have an album that's made the way she wants it all to be...and also those songs work amazingly well remixed into club/rave styles. And for a while there it seemed like every single she released had at least two DJs remixing things. I still have most of it in my iTunes library. :D ...also...damned if I wasn't singing along with this at about 80 percent lyric-correctness even though I haven't heard it in years. :D

Tori Amos (pronounced “ay-mus”) is one of a kind. Her lyrics, especially on the Little Earthquake album, are captivating and her use of tempo, volume, and breath is unmatched. “Crucify” and “Silent All These Years” (album versions) are fantastic with unique stories. When you’re ready (and you’ll know what I mean after you hear it), “Me and a Gun”, live version.
