It happens. I wouldn't have minded that in the barn, but I've been in a collapsing tent in similar weather, and that was uncomfortable. You got a heck of a bad first experience. Dork in the Road had a video just recently that presented something that I love: do you ride to camp, or camp to ride? From your willingness to poke around and look at ducks and enjoy a meal, it sounds like you might be "camp to ride" people: camping is just a practical aspect to staying on the road and enjoying your time doing that, be it eating up miles or slow riding through interesting small towns and visiting places.

I feel it's a much more accurate representation of what a lot of people go through with moto camping lol. I'm with you guys though. I would do it with a cabin or something to stay in. I’m super glad I was able to find a way to put this out finally! It was so chaotic that I wasn’t sure I’d ever find a way to make the footage make sense in a video lol but this is definitely the “what they don’t show you” side of things. Moto camping always looks so easy and fun…but that was NOT the case here 😂 We can’t wait to get back out there with all the lessons learned though! 🙌🏻🏕️

Camping is generally better in low humidity conditions. That is one of the things about California that does not suck, is the camping. Moisture wicking under garments designed for the humidity really help make it more comfortable to operate in that environment.

You guys are definitely cityfolk. Mr Haney's Green Acres campground sure sucked you in. I had camped for decades before 1st motocamping...but even then I motocamped first time at a Bike Resort where you camp in the lawns 50 yds from the paved lot, you have a restaurant with rooms over if ground sleeping isn't going well, there is lighting, the turf is level, there's bathrooms and a shower house, and there is a row of $70 one room cabins (at that time) JIC. I slept under a tarp tied to the bike. It rained my first time too but not as bad... Rain doesn't bother me much as I grew up with hurricanes every 2 or 3 years...and worse thunderstorms every other day in the summer. Next camping was a wilderness primitive but developed USFS campsite...then free sites on TVA lakes. I'd recommend the following: Pack less...that was too much stuff for a couple and a night or two. Go to a government or commercial simple campground where you just easy ride in. Avoid the RV campgrounds as you'll be surrounded by generators and kids partying all night. As to your gravel road riding...you must not be used to that at all. My private road is much like that but steeper...and occasionally a small creek crossing after a strong rain. I can do it on a CB250 with street tires which I use for local errand riding to save gas.

Don't sweat it, moto camping takes practice and it's super fun once you get a hang of it. Don't discourage yourself too fast from certain things just because it didn't work out the "first" time. 🙂 Thing is to start with some easy spots. Challenges are part of camping. Key is to not panic and act accordingly - and for that you need practice and good planning. Things take time. You'll learn what to pack and not to pack, how to cook while camping (mini gas stoves are great for that), what gear you need to shelter yourself (tarps, lines). I highly recommend camps near lakes with proper sanitation - these are great places to start. Most importantly - cheers to you guys and I wish you a great motocycling season! ✌😎

Love it. Ultimate character building. Camping is not a get up a go type thing. TONS of planning goes into your first few trips until you get a system down. I have found that you want to try to get to where you are going by 5pm. That gives you time to setup before the dark rolls in. Also, next setup on an empty stomach. Make sure you've had food ahead of time since it can be a few hours after arrival before you'll have time for food. I think you guys did awesome, and were in as "perfect" of a scenario as possible in that place since you had the barn. Definitely not what everyone wants to be they're first experience, but it is the best thing to learn from.

Y'all did great. Try a state park camp ground a few times so the two of you get a routine together with a more commercial site before Boone Docking. The storm threw you a curve ball but you adapted well. The key to a great camping experience is learning to roll with the unknown.

Oh my God, that was hilarious! Although I'm sure that at the time it must have been anything but. Your story telling technique made it even funnier! Love how you used the music to make it more dramatic. I highly recommend taking a puck or something to put under the motorbike stands to stop the bikes from sinking into the grass/mud if you ever find the strength to try it again, lol. It's a good idea to practice putting the tent up at home a few times so that you learn how to do it quickly just in case you have rain when you get to your campsite due to the fact that your tent is put up with the inner first. I'm in the UK so we've got an outer first tent as it rains a lot here. Keep up the good work. I love your channel and it's because of you that I ended up getting my Rebel 500 a few years ago. Failure to plan is planning to fail! LOL. Who goes camping when they've never even set their tent up before and then when they are late leaving, goes ahead and leaves?! Sounds like something I would do. 🤣 Seriously tho, I have found that things like this are what make my motorcycle trips more fun! I just try to remember that I will be fine, and that I can take whatever comes my way. If you keep a positive attitude and laugh at things like everything that happened, life is much more pleasant in general. 😉 Just discovered your channel yesterday or day before and I am really enjoying it. I have been thinking of downsizing to a Rebel 1100 as my current bike is a bit bigger (HD Softail Heritage) and there are many times when I wish I had one a bit smaller. So I have been devouring videos about them.

I’d say you guys did great for a first time, though I recommend going to a dedicated campground or state park campground when you’re first getting into any sort of camping, they usually have pretty well maintained gravel roads that aren’t too steep and easier to ride on

You should go with someone who knows what they're doing. Also practice things like cooking and setting up the tent before you go. And plan some activities so you're not just bored. Also, don't be afraid to bail. You're doing it for fun, not to prove you can.

A. We would’ve practiced those things, but like I said, everything showed up too late. B. Activities were planned…the storm was not. Not many planned activities can be carried out in a barn instead of the waterside campsite lol C. We did bail. Like I said, this was supposed to be a weekend trip and we left after the first night once we saw how bad the weather was. Couldn’t have left any sooner or we’d have been riding through the storm instead of safe inside a barn.

this was great. I have to ask man, did you never ride dirt bikes? I would say the best choice you can make in the future is keep your primary road tires on and do moto-glamping where all your time is on road and then either staying in hotels or very close to road camp sites. OR swap out your road tires for something like the Michelin Anakee Wilds ot Dunlop Trailmax. Those alone would make that tiny bit of gravel much easier to maneuver.

Man, it's terrible that this was your first experience camping. Destination unknown, inclement weather prowling in, untested equipment. . . that was a whole lot of Murphey's Law ("anything that can go wrong, will go wrong"). I'd definitely encourage you guys to try again at some spot w/in 30 mins of home where you can set up the tent for a few hours in the shade & cook over a wood fire (in a grill?). Go somewhere nice to test out your new equipment, turn it into a romantic picnic or something (& bring backup food in case the store bought stuff is a miss, or your home-made jerky didn't keep well). That was a terrible 1st time, but you should try again. The beauty of nature is incredible, & even a night camping makes you grateful for all the modern conveniences we often take for granted.

Seriously the most heinous things make the trips more memorable. Our last trip down the Blue Ridge Parkway on our bikes with my parents was a mess. Hot rain in Roanoke, VA and my husband locked his Harley keys IN the truck with all of our warmer jackets. In Blowing Rock, NC we were able to drill out the lock. While riding in the raid to Blowing rock, my dad handed my mom his glasses to hold and she lost them along the road somewhere. We realized while we were drilling the trunk lock that my husbands rear tire was wearinf BAD on the left side. The rest of the trip to Maggie Vally, NC and the week there was wonderful. The tire was bald by then on the left side. There had been a rock slide on the parkway after we had come down so we had to take a detour at one point. Between Blowing Rock and Roanoke we stopped at a brand new dollar general in Ennice, NC just south of the VA border for a drink and a break. Pulling out of the parking lot, mom and dad’s bike shut off and never started again. The guys tried to trouble shoot some things. The moral of the story, y'all, is to HAVE TOWING ON YOUR VEHICLES. They didn't. The Indian dealer in Roanoke wouldn't come get it because it wouldn't fit on their trailer. Uhaul didn't have a big enough trailer for it and it's a trike so you couldn't rent a box truck because the ramp wouldn't be wide enough. I ended up calling a local tow company to at least haul it the 105 miles to the already paid for hotel in Roanoke. The next morning, moms friend and her husband were coming to get it on their trailer and take it and then home. Still with me? We're not done yet folks! They got to the light to turn off to the hotel where we were and got into a tender bender! We got the traller queen loaded up finally and left the hotel super late at 3PM. We had the intentions of following them home on the interstate, but if you've even ridden you KNOW the interstate on a bike is miserable. We stopped around 6 to eat dinner in Lewisburg, WV and we decided there was no way we could continue the interstate. We parted ways for them to go interstate and we would go back roads and didn't think it through that it was almost dark and we were 3 hours from home and didn't grab our chaps or anything. We rode 91 miles from Lewisburg to Huttonsville and were frozen. We had to stop and we decided that instead of riding the remaining 80 miles home that we would ride the 38 miles to our cabin instead and stay there overnight. We had no clothes but what we had on, but there was hot water for a shower and a good nights sleep. So we grabbed a few donuts in Huttonsville to have for breakfast and pushed on. We snuggled in for a movie and some hot tea that night and woke refreshed and WARM and headed home FINALLY. After we got home, a day late, the Indian was hauled to the house and was pulled up the driveway with the four wheeler and is now safely in our garage. We still laugh about everything and it’s one of the most memorable!

My first moto camping trip with my gf (although she was in a car) was not the best either haha. It was a nice night but someone rolled up at midnight blasting music and a generator and then continued the music until 3 am. And I mean concert level volume from a giant PA speaker. Absolute a-hole. Don't be discouraged, first time not enough pre planing and a fee things going against you on this one. Plan another trip check the gear out, plan for the worst but know it will be better. Motor camping takes a few times to get use to it. After that you can narrow things in that you need and makes life better.

I'd go with adventure bikes for motocamping because of the possibility of roads like that. Your cruisers would be fine if you were going somewhere like a KOA but if you want to camp in hilbilly country, you need ADV bikes. At the very least if you stick with the cruisers, I recommend taking off road riding courses. Also look into wilderness living/survival classes. The more wilderness skills you have, the less stuff you'll have to load on your bikes

Really just bad timing and poor planning. Just car camp some spots to get a feel for terrain. For the weather, a really well staked tent and rainfly will do the trick but experience is key there. If you haven't tent camped in a storm before it's just scary, most "seasoned" campers aren't sweating this stuff, they know their gear and nothing short of a tornado is gonna ruin it for them. It's kind of a catch 22, you need trust in your equipment and you can't earn that trust without a little faith. I try to weather my equipment in the backyard first and I understand you seem to live in an apartment so car camp and when things get too bad you can hop in the car but try and spend the night with the storm. With a motorcycle there is no car escape so gear trust is crucial. Backpackers weather this all the time being miles and miles away from any vehicle or escape at all, no barns to pull the tent under either. That said, planning goes a long way and should include handling the unexpected whether that's bailing on a trip or trusting your gear and experience to get you through! I'm sorry this was a terrible experience but learn from it and don't give up on motocamping!

Just a theory but I noticed when you were struggling, you had low Torque set on your bike. I'd try upping the Torque to Mid or High on your User setting next time to see if that might help with off-road gravel trails when it gets steep.

That’s not what that setting means. It’s torque control, essentially meaning traction control, not the torque level. So a higher level doesn’t mean more torque, it means more traction control intervention. If anything, it would’ve helped to turn it completely off because you can see my TC light going crazy most of that hill climb, meaning it kept cutting power trying to let me get traction. If I had turned it up, it would have intervened and cut power more aggressively. But none of that matters because I will NEVER be in that situation EVER again if I have anything to do with it 😂 It’s hard to tell, but that hill wasn’t normal gravel like the driveway. It was rocks that were legit the size of goofballs. Which is why I was bouncing around so much and the TC was having an aneurysm 😅

Regular tent camping is rough enough I couldn’t imagine moto camping. Koas and state parks usually have cabins that can be rented. That might be a good alternative or hotels near state/national parks. Can ride the motorcycles through the parks and hike but still get running water, ac, and option to cook or eat at restaurants.

Ok, no motocamping for me. First, I hate gravel roads...so not gonna do it. I live in TX so hot and humid is a way of life here but certainly not gonna do this in a storm. Glad you both survived

I'll be honest, Moto-camping does not sound fun to me. I'm more of a, 2-3,000 pound small Trailer RV that my bike can be towed inside of type of camping lol

Yikes! It’s definitely not for me. Mosquitoes absolutely feast on me not to mention ticks and biting flys, heat, humidity, noisy party people at nearby campsites, having to bring my CPAP machine and a battery to power it, planning and packing, setup and takedown… I’d rather just do a backyard fire and sleep in my own bed and stay in hotels on the road.

motocamping in the rain is not really for everyone.. or depends entirely on location.. in my area, it is best time to camp when it rains..😉👌

Camping is best done with friends in cool weather. If its hot, always by a swimming hole. Sitting in a tent alone, or with the same person you spend every night with, thats not all that fun. Especially in the heat.
