⚠️ heads up to anyone using a diode laser. Goggles that block blue light will be ORANGE not green. Make sure to research the wavelength (it will be in NM) that your laser emits, and how much OD (optical density) is needed to protect from it! When wearing the goggles you shouldn’t see ANY blue. Stay safe!
@MeatSim9
@MeatSim9 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, super confused by the goggles that came with my machine, but I confirmed with the company that they were the right kind. Even though the glasses are varied colors. Weaker 1.6watt laser came with green, and the stronger 10watt came with red, but both within the same wavelengths, and the old goggles are safe for the stronger laser. Doesn't make much sense to me, but they're the guys that designed it, so I kinda have to put my trust in them.
@Kayakasaurus
@Kayakasaurus Жыл бұрын
@@MeatSim9 laser glasses cover a broad spectrum of light but different wavelengths will get different levels of optical density protection, and there’s usually a steep fall off. So green goggles might block some blue light but with a lower OD. laser glasses are supposed to come with a chart that shows the OD going up and down across the protected wavelengths. I think the minimum OD for my 10 watt was 4 or 5. The glasses mine came with were the correct orange color but they didn’t have a nm and OD rating, only an impact rating. The glasses I purchased online have an OD of 7 for the 450 nm blue wavelength. I thought the laser companies would know what they’re talking about too but there seems to be a big disconnect between their engineering and their advertising/product support. The advertising for the laser I used shows it on a coffee table with a person and a dog staring at it w no eye protection as it engraves metal lol. The machine is really well made tho!

Yep, my buddy got a wicked laser a month before the store closed due to issues of changes in federal regulations. But the fool wanted to use his blue laser on his weed pipe. Thankfully he had goggles, but the next day he had a distinct sunburn on his face despite smoking at night due solely to his blue laser.

WOW. Kayakasaurus (and others!), I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to inform others. The only color I've ever seen used in regards to laser safety is green, so I thought nothing of it! It's hard to pinpoint what we enjoy the most - the "main" portion of your video, your "intro section" where you introduce the topic, or the random "snippet(s) of silliness" at the end... but, honestly, in the end, it doesn't really matter - it's all equally enjoyable, and makes our day a whole bunch better when its been "enhanced" by some of your video goodness. Keep on SteadyCraftin'!

Thank you so much, my friend! (And for that phone call too, which was so helpful!) You have no idea how much the feedback means coming from you. And yesssssir, this was one of those times where my camerawoman really made it happen! (Being able to trade up between either focusing on doing the action, or running the camera, was a huge deal. Made it feel like less work, which I think resulted in getting way more shots than normal.)

@@botmaster2005 :D Thank you for the suggestions! It has been disheartening because satire, parody, and documentary/reporting purposes are all covered under Fair Use... but *KZbin* doesn't enforce that. Basically it's up to the intern or person handling copyright claim disputes for that company/property: They can easily hit "deny" and go on to the next one. KZbin only gets involved once it escalates a little, and that get scary because it can start to get into *strike* or lawyer territory. :/

8:15 - You can use little neodymium coin magnets as risers too, and when you need something like paper or flimsy plastic held down, you can use them on top too, so the airflow doesn’t blow the thing you’re cutting away. I have a honeycomb under my ancient FullSpectrum and I use those neo mags to hold down the stuff so it keeps it tight.

A little samplin’ from Whitney…love it! I just finished putting together a kit for a mechanical music box with gear drive and secret compartments. The brand was ROKR, if you wanted to look them up to see. It was made from hundreds of laser-cut pieces, cut into 5-9”x12”, 1/8” thick plywood sheets. The precision of the laser cuts was mind-blowing. Every piece popped out of the sheets of plywood perfectly. And, they all went together perfectly, too. There were all kinds of laser-drawn pretty details lightly cut in to the pieces as well. I was thoroughly impressed. Loved the Steady Craftin patches you cut out of all those materials. Can’t wait to see what else you get up to with your laser cutter.

Great video! I can see your mind already turning with the possibilities for future projects. I could see you making wooden figurine standees with bases, or miniaturized wood set pieces for stop motion animation. I've worked with laser cutters for a couple years and wanted to share some knowledge I've picked up to hopefully save you some time in the future. 1. I recommend buying some r-type style tack paper to prep your material. You can use a rubber squeegee to apply it to the back and then x-acto the edges. This greatly reduces the scorching of parts. It can work on the front as well, but only if you're not engraving. A honeycomb bed with fume extraction would also greatly aid this issue. 2. You can even engrave metals with a low powered laser using a product called cermark (or similar). We used to use taped down thin cardboard to cut outlines of our parts first. Then we could place the metal parts in those holes, and they would be aligned for the engrave job. Simply rinse the metal parts (not down drains though) and done! Works with brass, stainless steels, carbon steels, and more. Zinc anodized metals may be hazardous, so do some research if you want to try it. 3. Engraving and then cutting is a good approach much of the time, but there can be some advantages to doing it the other way as well. For example, it sucks to run a 45 minute engrave that's ruined by a failed cut pass. Don't overlook the workflow of quickly cutting many 'blanks' out all at once, then doing a more time consuming engrave later. This allows for iterations and variety, or even mass production with a cardboard template to hold many parts in place later. If you raster engrave one part at a time, it may take a while. But if the laser can cross 8 parts in one movement of the y axis, you will save time per part since it's not moving back and forth as much. Have fun!!! Laser cutters are powerful tools, but they're also extremely fun to play around on. Can't wait to see what you come up with! :)

Ooh, The Crafsman! (Long time listener, first time caller, ...) I've had one and loved one of these -- the extension and rotary are worth the extra dollars, especially the extension -- 12x24 sheets of most stuffs is cheaper than the smaller trims of most stuffs -- the wiring is easy enough -- probably pays for itself if you batch parts. @@TheCrafsMan you’re welcome :) I always look forward to your content. Like I’ve said before, you are always one of my favourite channels 👍👍 Keep up the great work. I am working on something for the Toff Workshop channel but it’s gonna take a while as I have lots of complicated stuff to make for it. But I’m really excited to get it all finished as soon as possible and share it with you 👍😊

Also another really interesting thing to do is using a mix of laser rasters and vectors. This is especially good to fill in text and shade areas.

I found a neat trick with laser cutting fabric. If you run the beam on synthetic fabric then run the same edge but a bit smaller on lower power then it can sinter the edge and prevent most fraying. It takes some practice but it seems to work well on polyester.

This looks great! I had to get rid of my k40 because it was huge, badly made, the software was dodgy (except k40 whisperer) and the tube failed and started arcing to the casing dangerously. Also the water pump and tank, extractor and compressor was a lot of extra gear. This looks much better, though less raw power. I presume it will cut/engrave perspex?

Hey CrafsMan. I got worried for a minute there. I have not seen any of your videos in my suggestion feed in a long time. I actually thought about it and searched out the channel itself and was relieved that you are still out here "Steady Craftin"! It some how unselected my notifications for your channel so I suggest everyone double check their own settings.

Here's a project idea for you to try: die-cut boxes. Engrave, lightly, the folds to score them. Then you can just fold-up some card-stock boxes as packaging whenever you need that "professional" look. :)

Best KZbin channel on the whole platform. I wanted to ask you Mr. Crafsman, A while back you said that if you could start over things would be different. I was curious what things would you have done differently? I’ve come across that a lot. How the things in your head are so different from how they become created. I wanted to know what was in your head compared to what we see. I’ll see you on Patreon soon!

Can you build a registration fence, a perfect 90 degree corner. Then you can line up and get your cuts perfectly centered. The laser and cnc routers I’ve used in the past when I was a sign maker always had something as such

I operated a laser for cutting steel, at a steel mill. Very fun work, but man, that laser was finicky. It would go from cutting to "welding" at the drop of a hat.

Thank you for this, CraftsMan. It'll be interesting to see how much you use this unit, and how long it actually lasts. I've been looking at much more robust laser engravers (Epilog, for example) for a working shop, who knows, maybe you found a diamond! .

I'd love to get one of these some day. Need to have a workshop first. I work mostly with leather. I've used a wppd burning kit with leather before, and the smell is unpleasant. How was the smell when using a Lazer to burn the leather?

I get cleaner cuts sometimes when I do max power quite high speed but a ton of passes. Like 30-60 passes. It seems to vaporise some of the material with less scorching.
