This song is talking about the futile heroism of a British soldier during the Charge of the Light Brigade, a light infantry manoeuvre during the Battle of Balaclava (1854) which was a poem written by Alfred Lord Tennyson which was written 6 weeks after the event.

To add a bit of context this song is a about the famous and tragic charge of the light brigade at the battle of balaclava during the Crimean war in the 1850s. Mainly Britain and France against Russia. Orders ended up getting miss understood so the light cavalry charged the Russian heavy cannons head on. Not many survived the battle. The music video show extracts from the famous poem charge of the light brigade. If you want a modern band with music as well researched as this I highly recommend checking out Sabaton.
@MrGunBunny13
@MrGunBunny13 Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the charge itself was a success and they captured the Russian artillery but their maneuver was not communicated to other battalions so there was no infantry to screen them from the Russian counterattack which followed. The cannons iron is still used to produce the Victoria Cross to this day.
@philipcoggins9512
@philipcoggins9512 Жыл бұрын
@@MrGunBunny13 The charge was a complete disaster. They charged the wrong guns. They didn't capture the guns. They lost half their number, and the worst of all, in their retreat they had to be saved by the French! The next day at muster they had roughly 250 men and 17 horses fit for any military duty. All because the three commanders involved absolutely hated each other...

This in my top 3 of Maiden!!! So excited to see you checking this out. To answer to your question about the war - it's based on tales from the Crimean War. Here's what Wikipedia says in the opening paragraph of that war: "The Crimean War was fought from October 1853 to February 1856 in which Russia lost to an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, the United Kingdom and Piedmont-Sardinia. The immediate cause of the war involved the rights of Christian minorities in Palestine (then part of the Ottoman Empire) with the French promoting the rights of Roman Catholics, and Russia promoting those of the Eastern Orthodox Church." MOST of Maiden's songs are about historical, biblical, or mythological/folklore stories.

Sabaton - They are a heavy metal band that sings about significant historical wartime events. Lead singer's voice is insanely good and they always try to tell the story from a somewhat neutral perspective. Some of the videos have incredible and expensive cinematography and acting. "Attack of the Dead Men", would be a good place to start. It's about Russian vs. German forces during World War One and how deadly chemical weapons changed the battlefield.

Fantastic reaction!👍 With many Iron Maiden songs, you get an accurate history lesson. The Trooper tells the account of a British soldier in the Battle of Balaklava during the Crimean War. Lord Cardigan led the British cavalry against Russian forces during this battle on 25 October 1854. Lord Raglan had intended to send the Light Brigade to prevent the Russians from removing captured guns from overrun Turkish positions. However, there was miscommunication in the chain of command and the Light Brigade was instead sent on a suicide mission charging straight at heavy Russian artillery which cost the lives of over a hundred British soldiers. Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote a poem to commemorate this disaster and he called it "The Charge of the Light Brigade". The bronze that the recaptured guns were made from was used to make the Victoria Cross, a military medal of the very highest order that was awarded "for valour". Very few of these have ever been awarded, even to this day. Other great Iron Maiden history lessons you could check out.... Run to the Hills, Alexander the Great, Paschendale and Empire of the Clouds. I've been a Maiden fan since hearing their debut album in 1980 when I was 10 years old. I've seen them live every time they've played in London, their home ground, and they never disappoint. Up the Irons!!!

Lilly Jane, we still have tons of music like this being made but unfortunately it's on smaller labels these days so it's rarely noticed. The U.S., Canada, Japan and many countries in both Europe and Asia have strong markets full of hard rock/classic metal style bands. Even Iron Maiden themselves are still putting out music like this. Their song The Writing on the Wall was just released in August. Frontier Records/Frontiers Records are my favorite label when it comes to this type of music these days. Iron Maiden and quite a few other fantastic bands are currently on Sanctuary Records. Bands such as Smith/Kotzen, Voodoo Circle, Dead Daisies, California Breed, Heaven and Earth, Sunstorm, The Last Vegas, Coldrain and Hyde/Vamps (not to be confused with the band The Vamps ... Vamps is a fantastic Japanese hard rock/classic metal band) still have strong followings and continuously put out great music. Some really good bands that got passed by yet had fantastic libraries from recent years include Black Country Communion, Eye Empire and Hurt.

@@nikkihayes5411 No, Volume I did not feature Accept, but Volume II (the following year) did - the song was Balls To The Wall, though. However, in my Internet searches of these compilations, it appears there were many compilations by the name of "Master Of Metal" - from Canada, the US, and maybe a few other regions - and even the Canadian/K-Tel versions had some alternate track lisitngs. So, for all I know, Fast As A Shark might have appeared on one of those?

The logo's typeface was a serif style, sort of a combination of calligraphy styles and Roman block-letter, and the colors were mainly red & blue for Volume I, and a disgusting pink & lime green for Volume II (what were they thinking ! probably a reflection of the "glam" era or something?).

@@nikkihayes5411 Can't say as I recall the cover you described, but I do recall seeing that Bon Jovi song as one of the roster alternates (Van Halen was another one). That particular song turned up on another Canadian compilation in 1985 called White Hot : An All-Out Metal Assault, and that cover had close-up of a hand clad in a finger-less glove and a spiked/studded wristband, gripping onto a guitar neck, and the point of contact was glowing "white hot". Despite some of the glam bands being on it, it was a pretty good mix as well. Though I think the label was "PolyTel" (rather than K-Tel) or "Polygram" or some damn thing... we Canucks had so many goofy "as advertised on TV" types of distribution labels, it was impossible to keep them all straight, lol.

Iron Maiden music from the 1980s has such great story telling within their songs, a tradition the boys continued until today, I would suggest Empire of the Clouds, from Book of Souls. Iron Maiden leans very heavy into history and literature/poetry for their songs. Another excellent song to react to in Powerslave, a song about an Egyptian pharaoh who believes he is a god but must face death. If you want a good song based on literature try The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, a retelling of the poem of the same name by Coolridge. If a song that is pure story telling, listen to Dance of Death or Fear Of The Dark.

welcome to maiden Written by bassist and founding-member Steve Harris, the song is based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854, which took place during the Crimean War,[2] and inspired by Lord Tennyson's 1854 poem of the same name

"Rime of the Ancient Mariner" for more story telling. Check out their live concert from Rock In Rio 2001 also. Any song really. "Fear of the Dark" for exemple.

Great reaction to a great song. Lot's more Maiden songs to react to. Fear of the Dark - live in Rio is a good one. You showed some genuine shock at the scenes with horses falling down. For reference, the charge scenes are from the movie "The Charge of the Light Brigade" starring Errol Flynn in 1936. During the filming wires were placed across the field to trip the horses. 25 horses were killed as a result. You can see a few horses in these clips actually breaking their necks. After the charge was filmed Errol Flynn attacked the director because of the destruction. That scene caused the US Congress to pass laws regarding animal safety in movies and the ASPCA banned tripwires in movies going forward.

This song was based on the 1853 Crimean war, in which the coalition w/ British empire (w/ the French and Turkish Ottoman) attacked the Russian empire for territorial control.
