Notice that Ronnie Van Zant, the lead singer, did his part at the beginning of the song, then let the rest of the band have their moment to shine. When his vocals were done, he moved out of the way and blended into the background. He didn't try to be out front and be a part of it. In my opinion, that makes him a great front man. He doesn't want nor need all the attention, all the time. RIP to him and the others who tragically lost their lives.
@TheGrandmaMoses4 жыл бұрын
Afaik, the long solo was attached to the song in the studio simply because of that very reason - Ronnie wanted to have 5 minutes to rest his voice when playing live, so he said 'just do something for 5 minutes' and they did ( iirc, Allen Collins played both guitar parts for the recording to get that sweet chorus effect ). Again, specifically for the purpose of the singer having time to rest when performing the song live. Allen was simply a beast, no matter how much the drummer and the bassist are hyped up here. It's clear that him and the slide guitar carry this one. Stupid, stupid plane.

On October 20, 1977, a Convair CV-240 passenger aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed in a wooded area near Gillsburg, Mississippi. Chartered by the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd from L&J Company of Addison, Texas, it was near the end of its flight from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Lead vocalist/founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray all died as a result of the crash while 20 others survived

The guitarist in the red pants, Steve Gaines and his sister, Cassie, a backup singer also died in the crash. The piano player had to have his nose reattached, the guitarist in white, Allen Collins, messed up some vertebrae. The drummer, Artimus Pyle, went to find help as they crashed in the boondocks. Both pilots and a road manager also died.

The sound you asked about near the beginning, that sort of "bird tweet," was made by Gary Rossington using his slide right near the pickup. Allen Collins, the guitarist in white, wrote the music and is the main soloist. They were founding members of the band. During the recording of their debut album the bassist, Leon Wilkeson, left and was replaced by Ed King. When Leon returned Ed switched to guitar and Skynyrd's three guitar attack was born ("Bring all my mules out here," as Ronnie liked to say.) He co-wrote "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Saturday Night Special" and generally did great work with the band but left after their third album. A few months later, after some prompting by Cassie Gaines, one of the Honkettes, Skynyrd's backing vocalists, the band agreed to let her brother Steve audition as a replacement for King. He got the gig and is the bearded guitarist in the video. He's on the live album "One More From the Road" and the studio album "Street Survivors." Three days after "Street Survivors" was released Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines died when the band's plane ran out of gas and crashed. The rest of the band was severely injured. That was about 3 1/2 months after this video was filmed.

You're right -- 3 guitarists plus bass, piano and drums (and 3 backup singers.) The fellow on the red guitar (Gary Rossington) plays the slow early part on uses a slide. It's how he gets those whistle songs you were wondering about. The guy in the white suit and white guitar (Alan Collins) plays the bulk of the fast part, but it's not strictly a solo. At certain moments, the fellow with green guitar (Steve Gaines) plays complementary shredding along with Alan.
