When this came out in 1984 this was the fastest, heaviest, most insane song ever written. Literally next level music for it's time and it still holds up remarkably well all these years later. I've only seen Metallica live once in my life and I was fortunate enough to hear this song played live complete with fireballs erupting out of the stage. When that peaceful intro hit it's only one of 3 times at a concert where I screamed "YES!" so loud I blew out my vocal cords. Didn't even care. I was in thrash metal heaven.

"Cliff Em All" is a mandatory documentary. It was their first video and they released it just after Cliff's death. Also, Joseph Gordon Levitt is a huge metalhead and Metallica fan. He made a movie inspired by Cliff Burton called "Hesher". It also stars Rainn Wilson, Natalie Portman, and John Carroll Lynch. Metallica watched it and then told JGL that he could use all their music he wanted to. They said it captured the essence of Cliff spot on. It's a weird, sweet, funny movie.

Love how this song begins with a simple Christmas carol then immediate nuclear war. Literally. Just for perspective this album released during the Cold War when the prospect of a nuclear winter was discussed in the public domain frequently. A subject that is bubbling up again unfortunately.

'Fight fire with fire' is about armageddon by nuclear war... it was a big scare during the Reagan years of the Cold War in the 80's. It's a concern now too, but it isn't a gigantic fire alarm that it was back in 1984 - they were like, "The commies are coming to nuke us! Take cover in an underground shelter in that event..." Death is the tying theme w/ all 8 songs on 'Ride the Lightning'... Even the instrumental closer 'The call of Ktulu' is based on H.P. Lovecraft's fictional monster that rises from the deep oceans and brings insanity & death to humanity w/ it... They made a song 'The thing that should not be' (On the 3rd album 'Master of Puppets') about the mythical monster. Metallica's first album "Kill 'em all" is definitely a thrash metal album to begin with... it was recorded and released independently in 1983, just as heavy metal was getting faster and more brutal by artists like Accept, Venom, Anvil, Raven, Exciter, etc... Metallica took all that and delivered a shredding record like no other out there... It's a bit juvenile lyrically ('Hit the lights'... 'Motorbreath'... 'Whiplash') but they were 19/ 21 when it was written, so it has that youthful enthusiasm... It's a great record. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth was credited w/ half the songs on the album (even though Kirk Hammett played all his leads and parts). 'Ride the Lightning' showed a depth in their lyrics and peaked w/ the shredding heaviness... The 3rd album 'Master of Puppets' (1986) showed a progression and maturity that no other thrash metal band had... There wasn't a band out there in 1986 (Anthrax, Slayer, Exodus, Death Angel, Overkill...) that didn't listen to that record or not admit that Metallica was going to be huge.

Master of Puppets album was next chronologically after Lightning The album of Master of Puppets was Honored to be preserved by the United States Library of Congress on the 2015 registry. The Library of Congress has claimed that Metallica’s Master of Puppets album is "of great historical significance." The Library of Congress has been preserving art since the year 1800. It was established during the Presidency of John Adams by an act of congress It was first established as simply a library for congress. In 1814, the library which was housed in the Capitol Building was burnt down by the British. A new library was built and filled by Thomas Jefferson’s private collection of over six thousand books and works of art. Over the years, the Library has grown to house millions of works deemed of significant importance to the history and culture of the United States. On January 27, 2003, the first 50 recordings were announced by James Billington, the then Librarian of Congress. The first four yearly lists each had 50 selections. Since 2006, 25 recordings have been selected annually. As of 2022, a total of 600 recordings have been preserved in the Registry. Metallica and Nirvana (Nevermind album) are the ONLY two bands that you can classify as hardrock/metal on that list of over 600. Just two. (though IMO Gun & Roses "Appetite for Destruction" belongs there as the only other for sure entry).

Haha, love how you include a mini clip of the best line from Fury Road, lol! I think the move from peaceful classical style into shredding metal, is akin to the world forever changing once the first nuclear weapon was detonated...the transition from centuries of traditional life & warfare, into a world where we know forever that we now have weapons capable of totally obliterating all life on the planet. This song is about the Cold War theory of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD), literally fight fire with fire. Remember, this song was written in the early 80s when the Cold War was still going strong...I had a recurring nightmare of dying in a nuclear explosion back then as an early teen.
