'Seek & destroy' is a fan fave, and they play it at almost every concert... I believe the lyrics were an extreme interpretation of Metallica's ideology on stage - destroy the competition and win the battle for the audiences. They spent their 1st year in L.A. in the Hollywood 'glam rock' scene and were regarded as a 'joke' by other bands... It wasn't until they moved to San Francisco in 1983 when they felt at home in the thrash metal scene there... It was all about "Crush, kill, destroy..." in terms of playing metal music.

Through History, whenever a certain type of "Music Scene" becomes overrun popular there comes a reaction, Thrash Metal as you mention are one example, another one could be how people got tired of the 80's Hair Metal (Twisted Sister, Mötley Crue etc.) and then Grundge came from Seattle (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden etc. as a breath of fresh air.) No I'm not saying Grundge is Metal :-)

Around the time Metallica was up and coming there was a lot of underground thrash/skate music what was really popular. (DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, Motorhead, etc.) Most of it was a high energy punk/metal crossover. Before that, you had Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Sabbath, etc. (metal) and hard rock acts like Van Halen. I grew up in the 80's and no radio station would touch Metallica. They were the redheaded stepchild of the music industry, but they were getting bigger than any mainstream act and it was just a matter of time. The black album was where they went commercial and "broke out," but in my opinion their early, heavier work was not only more meaningful but more powerful. Master of Puppets is one of the greatest albums of all time.
@argantyr5154 Жыл бұрын
Exactly and that was one reason why Metallica and similar Bands had to be great live, because if you werent amazing live or got any airtime then you would have a hard time making it. I totally agree with Master of Puppets, but I must admit I have a soft spot of Ride the Lightning.

Never expected them to play that B side song let alone open with it and was the fastest heaviest song ever run that moment and the pyrotechnics blowing off the stage just full on crazy!!!

Back in the days this album came out metal was “underground” so to speak. There was no platform for it. Metal grew to what is is today by word of mouth and metal music magazines. Like I live in central PA and it took some years before I heard it for the first time. There was absolutely no radio play for metal music or rap for that matter. That’s why people like me are so passionate and protective about this old music. We fought hard to get it going. We were persecuted and judged by how we dressed and this loud misunderstood music blasting out of our big boom boxes. The adults at the time thought we were evil monsters and horrible people. As an example your hair, makeup and outfit would have had you in that category in average america back in the mid 80s. And I think you look great and cool But average people would have steered clear of you on the street. Insane I know. Lol
@BaldotheDon Жыл бұрын
Hey, kids. Gen-X metalhead here. You have to understand the way we enjoyed this music when you start feeling a bridge or a coda or a denouement is getting a little longer than is strictly comfortable. Sure, we had this song blasting on the stereo, the boombox, the Walkman with the headphones, but the _preferred_ method of administration of the thrash treatment was a dilapidated block of concrete in the middle of nowhere or the middle of everything, interior walls painted flat black, a five-dollar charge at the door, a _filthy_ bathroom, and a surprisingly affordable bar, ultimately leading to a stage piled with enough amplification equipment to warrant an investigation by the Geneva Convention, and an open space in front of it that was filled with bodies thrashing around in a maelstrom of unleashed teenage rage and testosterone. When the pit is going like a trainwreck looking for a target, you want to make sure you don't skimp on what's classically designated "The Mosh Part." The toxic waltz must be respected, even if the track gets a little long.

What was around at the time this dropped...as a kid growing up during this time, here's what I remember. Of course, you still had the classic rock songs on the radio. Pop music (the stuff my sister listened to) was stuff like Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, U2, Tears For Fears, etc. Heart was big, so was Fleetwood Mac. My groove was stuff like Def Leppard, Ozzy, Black Sabbath, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Van Halen, Scorpions, The Police, Metallica, Motley Crue, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits. It's important to note how much MTv (back when they actually played music videos) blew up so many of the bands I liked at the time (or at least ones I liked once I was exposed to them on MTv). Def Leppard, Van Halen, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Scorpions, Dire Straits especially. Also, this was a time when you would see a popular song of the time appear in a popular TV show, like Dire Straits 'Brothers In Arms' showing up in a Miami Vice episode (one of the best, I'd say). Kind of like if on a Saturday night Barbi Benton (google it) was on 'The Love Boat' (google it), she'd also appear on 'Fantasy Island' (google it) right after. Yeah. Barbi Benton. Yum. Even though he was already an artist with a solid reputation, Prince's 'Purple Rain' release and the movie of the same name totally blew him up, just like Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' album and the video of the same name would have definitely broke the internet (if it existed) but it definitely blew MTv up. Of course there were other great things being done at the time in other genres, but between my sister and I listening to different radio stations, we were exposed to a good chunk of what was happening at the time.

well let's look at some perspective. this was THE song that changed the world. this was the FIRST song that exposed metallica to the world. the radio and Mtv was loaded with pop and pop metal and glam metal bands putting out the short 3 minute songs that the stations loved. and there was plenty of need and room for those bands as well. the 80's was just a vastly vibrant decade for music in general. but out of nowhere this song hit the underground channels like Z rock and the late night metal shows like a hammer. everyone wanted to know more about them. and this was the vanguard song that launched metallicas' career. and a throng of other acts followed in their footsteps presenting the long form song to various degrees of success. but know one hit bigger than metallica for sure. the is THE song for hardcore metallica fans as they never heard anything like it at the time it came out.

Before heavy metal? Hmm... Rock n' roll music in the 1950's by Elvis and Little Richard inspired The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in the 1960's to play that 'beat rock' music... or 'surf rock' music by The Beach Boys... Psychedelic music became popular in the 60's w/ The Beatles' '"Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album in 1967... bands like The Doors, Cream, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead ... and later... Genesis, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, etc. Santana was a band that fused latin music w/ 60's psychedelic music... Heavy rock music came to fruition w/ the introduction of Jimi Hendrix in 1967 to 1970... His guitar histrionics and aggressive sound inspired guitar-driven bands like Free, Mountain, Jethro Tull, Yes, Vanilla Fudge, Uriah Heep, etc... The Who was a rock band that was explosive on stage and became hugely popular by the late 60's... American bands like MC 5... The Stooges... were noisy and inspired what became punk rock and hardcore music. There was also pop music that was popular w/ audiences... R&B artists like The Supremes... The Temptations... Crooners like Tom Jones in the 60's... In the 70's, it was light music by The Carpenters, ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Blondie, Rod Stewart... dance & disco music by the Jackson 5... The Bee Gees ... Donna Summer... Stevie Wonder... The 80's was the synth pop era: Duran Duran... Phil Collins ... Prince ... Michael Jackson... Madonna ... Wham! (just to name a few) in the MTV era. When Led Zeppelin debuted in 1969, those first 2 record rearranged the game... 'heavy rock' became a commodity in the wake of their enormous success... Deep Purple became heavier as a result in 1970, and Black Sabbath debuted in the same year... Those 3 bands were the pioneers of what became 'heavy metal' music in the 70's... More 'heavy' rock bands emerged - Scorpions from Germany... Thin Lizzy from Ireland ... Aerosmith, Kiss, Blue Oyster Cult, Alice Cooper ... from the USA... Rush from Canada... Nazareth from Scotland. But it was Judas Priest who embraced the term 'heavy metal' for their music in the 70's. They came up w/ the black leather and metal studs image and the Harley bike onstage... as well as the twin guitar attack and the high vocals of Rob Halford that surpassed Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin's vocals. The late 70's was weird - punk rock dominated the UK scene by 1977 after The Ramones debuted and inspired British punk rock bands like The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, etc... In the US, it was disco acts like K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Village People, The Commodores, etc. that took over the scene... Bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep became obsolete later in the 70's as bands like Boston, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Journey, Queen, and others became more popular in the US w/ their arena rock sound... while 'new wave' bands like The Police, The Cars, Talking Heads... broke big as well.... But hope came in the form of Van Halen in 1978, and they would set the tone for commercial guitar-driven rock music in the 80's, as well as AC/DC from Australia... Judas Priest & Motorhead from the UK... and Quiet Riot in the USA. 1980 launched the careers of Judas Priest, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath (w/ singer Ronnie James Dio)... and were a direct assault against the synth pop fads of the early 80's... In L.A, Quiet Riot finally broke big in 1983... followed by glam rock bands like Motley Crue, Dokken, and Ratt... while Twisted Sister broke big from New York in 1984... Metallica spearheaded the thrash metal scene w/ Exodus, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth... in America... alongside bands from Canada like Anvil, Voivod, Exciter... British metal bands like Saxon, Iron Maiden, and Venom... German bands like Accept, Kreator, Sodom...

After their 2008 tour with Death Magnetic, Metallica presented their latest LP Hardwired... to Self-Destruct in 2016, their new album implied a challenge for the band, with the material they returned to their roots, which they put aside after the famous Metallica, from 1991. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal, made up of Diamond Head, Angel Witch, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, inspired James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich to form a band. With only a bass and drums, the duo recorded the demo for Hit The Lights. Some time later Dave Mustaine would join on guitar, and in a San Francisco bar called The Whiskey they would find their bassist Cliff Burton. Trash was born with Metallica's debut album, Kill 'Em All, in 1983, which renewed metal. After its release, many doors were opened, not only for Metallica, but also for all the underground bands that were discriminated against by the record labels. Thrash metal came to revolutionize and expand the genre, as glam metal and power metal dominated the scene. With the rise of bands like Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth, they forgot about dyed hair, leggings, high pitched vocals and opted for their simple lifestyle: torn denim clothes, long natural hair and above all, lots of alcohol.

Garage days revisited is an underrated gem of an album. It's covers of some of their favorite songs from the 70s and 80s. Before Metallica came out with thrash in the early 80s, heavy metal in the 70's was dominated by one band, Judas Priest! Black Sabbath is often cited as the roots of heavy metal, but their style was more heavy rock / doom metal... Priest IMO is the true granddaddy of metal... Anything of theirs from the 70s is pure gold, and often times some of the deepest cuts are some of the best, and nobody ever reacts to some truly great songs.. If you want something new to react to, 1970s Judas Priest albums would be perfect for your style of doing the entire album. By 1982 they already had 8 albums out, and nearly every track was amazing! If you were to do it, I would strongly suggest starting with 1976 Sad wings of destiny, and 1977 Stained class. Those 2 albums were true masterpieces of metal, and i get giddy at the thought of seeing you react to some of the more obscure tracks that noone else have done...

Great reaction! You've got an open mind and a good set of ears on you. I like your insightful and intelligent commentary. Ok you asked. I'm gonna rant a little. Being from California I saw Metallica live a lot in the early years. I believe the attitude expressed in S&D is one of disrespect to other bands. Yeah, I said it. I was in LA in 1983 and watched the rise of Metallica, as they moved to San Francisco and fell in with the thrash metal scene. They hadn't done well in LA. I was in bands, and the scene at the time was pretty cutthroat. Bands would sabotage each other's gear at shows. You had to watch your amp like a hawk. It was dog eat dog competition. Bands were a dime a dozen, and they were all competing for "pay to play" gigs at places like the Troubadour, Gazzari's, the Rainbow, the Whisky, the Roxy, Madame Wong's, Club Lingerie. You kinda had to have a gimmick, and Metallica didn't. They care about playing good music, and that was a good thing. But they came out of that competition. The bands winning that rat race at the time were bands like Motley Crue. Glam with a ton of gimmicks, and not a lot of great playing. Thankfully there was Van Halen--but they were pretty cutthroat themselves. Once they found their niche in the Bay Area Metallica started to take off. But the competitive attitude remained, and in ways it got worse. I watched Metallica diss other bands onstage, and I watched their crowds turn their back on the stage the entire time during opening acts' sets, often with middle fingers raised. It's kinda what they did. Right from the beginning it was a "we're better than you" attitude. I guess it helped them survive and thrive. I've never appreciated that attitude. Yeah, I was into Ride the Lightning. I dug Cliff Burton's bass solos. I saw them at Day On the Greens in Oakland, and I was front row in the snakepit at the Forum on the black album tour. But more and more I came to dislike their attitude. They're haters. And now? S&D is repetitive dinosaur music. They used to be called "progressive." Nah. You want progressive, try Rush. They did help popularize thrash metal, and they brought greater musicianship than many of those bands. But they just brought a different flavor to what bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were already doing. And Hetfield--don't look now, but Rob Halford was around long before you, was always more compelling than you, and can still sing rings around you! Don't get me started on Lars. Let the hate begin lol

LOL, they wanted to name the album "Metal Up Your Ass" and the record producers wouldn't let them, make sure you listen to the studio version of "Whiplash" one day! The black album is a good choice. What most people don't realize is it's the "Don't Tread On Me" album.

Black sabbath was the og metal band. We had rock bands and Southern rock bands. Plus disco came out. Alot of left over peace n love stuff from Woodstock hippie Gen. The next generation wasn't having it. So metallica, slayer,iron maiden and motley crue burst on the scene around 1982. Ozzy went solo, dio went solo, megadeth came then later was anthrax. Lots of other bands as well but in a nut shell people were looking for metal that wasn't from 10 years ago, needed heavier and faster. Thats the short version lol

Lilly, the music then was alot of glam rock. The bay area was very unique in a way. U had the thrash godfathers born there. Pick a band , because they all knew each other. Kirk Hammett was originally in Exodus, the current bass player of Metallica was in Suicidal Tendencies, Gary Holt from Exodus played for a minute in Slayer. Anthrax helped Metallica when they were struggling. They all watch each other play and were all kinda brothers. There are many stories. Live james gave a shout out to the deceased singer of Exodus. They were all and extended family in a way.

As far as I am concerned Lily, you should continue with the Black Album.

Rock and punk were big in the 70s. A good song would be Mercyful fate from the garage inc album or Satan's fall from Mercyful fate

In 1981 and 82, Disco was still a thing, early Hard Rock and Heavy Metal was popular but focused mostly on sex more than any other topic, meanwhile punk, old style country, r&b (way different than now) and others were around also. NWOBHM created a new kind of power-punk, and Thrash completely changed the game up by capturing the spirit/vitality of NWOBHM's punk sound, and blending it with amazing songwriting and Heavy Metal riffs.

Seek and Destroy, like many 80s era Metallica songs, is long. But that's what makes it so good. You can be training or competing hard at something, and fighting everything that's against you, including the part of you that wants to quit, and this song amplifies that part of you that says, I WILL PREVAIL.

This would have been a great one for a live video. 72 Seasons actually fits very well between Metallica's 80s and 90s stuff, so stick with it. The record label thing was directly in the title Kill 'Em all, as I am sure you already read about. And before metal, there was psychedelic, progressive, folk rock, Jimmy Hendrix, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, that sort of thing.

I would love to see what you think of Load. Just a warning in advance, if you're expecting a thrashy album, Load isn't it. By then, they evolved their sound to a more alternative metal. It's not bad, it's just different. That being said, it has some of James Hetfields BEST lyrics. By the time Load came out, James was in his mid 30s and the songs were almost a cry for help. Mama Said, Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn, The House Jack Built, Until It Sleeps, The Thorn Within. All great, deep songs.

Greetings from Cuba, I recommend that if you haven't listened to more Metallica albums, listen to albums like Right the Lightning, Master of Puppets and And Justice for All, and Garage Days Re-Reversite. Those are the best metallica albums, although the Metallica of Metallica, the so-called Black Album of the year 1991, is not bad. Albums like Load and Reload don't live up to what was expected of Metallica. I have been listening to rock and metal since the young age of 15 and I am 41 years old. My fan group is Iron Maiden, currently I shoot from Heavy Metal to the darkest Black, Death, Brutal Death Metal.

Metallica wanted to call this album Metal Up Your Ass. However, the record companies said no. Cliff Burton made an offhand comment about how they should kill 'em all ( meaning record company executives). And that's how this record got its name.
@TokusatsuGamingfan Жыл бұрын
It wasn't the record companies, it was the timid record distributors. And it was their original manager, Johnny Zazula that told them that they would have to change the album artwork as well as the name of the album.
