the Christmas truce of 1914? As the German soldiers lit their lanterns and displayed them on the edge of their trenches, carol singing broke out. Soon enough the British and French troops joined in. Christmas greetings and well wishes were exchanged, and offers of a temporary ceasefire were communicated between the trenches.

I read a book about ww1 that was written in 1920. There was a whole chapter about the Christmas truce. Of all the shocking things that came out of that war, I think that story was the most surprising.

Yes Lilly Jane, this is a true story, as with almost every Sabaton lyric. The story of this song is about the 25th of December 1914. The next year 1915, the commanders of both sides made sure that these kinds of gatherings were punishable by death penalty, as they were equivalent to treason.

Not to mention that by then, the professional soldiers, who were more likely to see comrades and not the Big Bad Evil Enemy from propaganda, were dead or scattered, replaced with conscripts and new recruits straight out of training.

@@realisticphish The soldiers who were around in '14 also had seen friends and comrades fall by the hundreds, were psychologically ground down due to the conditions and all around a lot more pissed off. Christmas 14 was basically at the beginning of the war and by 15 they were in it three times as long. The capacity for empathy and human-ness had run dry, basically. Which was a bit of a continuous theme for ww1 in general. Its also noteworthy, that the football playing and getting together swapping booze and singing carols was much more prevalent in British (and commonwealth) manned sectors of the front, because they werent involved as much on a personal level as the French, who were defending their homeland after all.

If I recall correctly, it's not so much 'treason' as 'fraternising with the enemy' (also quite serious - 'The Brass' don't want you becoming reluctant to kill your fellow man). It's a small distinction, but none the less...

If you start diving into Sabaton, get ready for not only some truly incredible songs, but for one heck of a history lesson! The vast majority of their songs, pretty much every one except for a few early tracks, are based on a single historical moment in military history. So ironic that you mentioned Nightwish while you were actually hearing Floor. You definitely need to let those credits roll!

This commemorates a true event. During 1914 on Christmas Eve, British and German troops could hear each other singing carols and other songs. They began to shout messages back and forth. The following day, at some points of the lines, troops on both sides got out of the trenches and met in No Mans Land. The took photos, exchanged gifts, and even played soccer. In some areas, they buried their dead. A few days later, the meetings ended. Officers on both sides tried to prevent it from happening again. Most of Sabaton's music commemorates true events that they believe should not be forgotten. Notable stories include; "Lady of the Dark", "No Bullets Fly", and "Night Witches". Their Animated Story videos are a great source of the story with the song.

NO WAY YOU REACT TO SABATON NOW!!!!!!! :O :O :O :O YOU HAVE TO REACT TO MORE OF THEIR SONGS!!!!! To explain: Sabaton songs are about major and important historical events (majority of them). This one for example is about an event that took place around Christmas 1914, during the first year of WW1, on its western front. It was between the Entente forces (UK, France) and Central Powers' forces (In this case, just Germany). It lasted 2 days (24 - 26 Dec) and during this time soldiers celebrated Christmas with one another, they even played a football match. This is just the tip of an iceberg, trust me, you WON'T REGRET listening to more of their songs. And you will always learn a historical event And speaking of their most popular and best songs (IMO), these are: - The Attack of The Dead Men - Uprising - Winged Hussars - 40:1 - Coat of Arms - Primo Victoria but there is just SO MUCH MORE and ALL OF THEM are about an event that took place in history, you really have to give them a listen, they are absolutely great

@Lilly Jane Reacts: To answer your question, yes, this event happened in the first year of World War I, in 1914. These events happened between the troops of Germany, Belgium, France, and Britain. Not only did the fighting stop for a day, but the men who came together exchanged not only alcohol, but also everything from buttons to photograogs to cigarettes and chocolates. There was also an impromptu fútbol game, a soccer game, between the British and Germans, which the Germans won 4-3. During the Truce, both sides cleared the battlefield of the dead and buried them. After the Truce, one German commander had to move his troops to another section of the line, as his men refused to fire on the men they had, just the day before, celebrated Christmas with. There is also, to this day, a cross that marks the place where the Christmas Truce happened, near the town of Ypres, Belgium. Interestingly as well, I once read a comment on another channel from a gentleman who said that if not for the Christmas Truce, he wouldn't exist today. Why? Because his grandfathers met each other that day in 1914. After the war, they became friends with each other, and their families married into each other. This song is important for a very good reason: To show that no matter how dark things get, the light of humanity can still shine if given a chance, even if the winds of war make it seem as if that light will flicker out and die. For a next reaction, I recommend either one of two animated videos: One for the song No Bullets Fly, the other for the song Night Witches. Merry Christmas, Lilly. I hope you and your family have a safe and happy holiday season. Cheers!

Sabaton is a Swedish power metal band from Falun, which was formed in 1999. The band's songs are inspired by various historical wars. Even the band name is military inspired, as Sabaton is also the name of the part of the armor that covers the foot. Sabaton has toured with, among others, Iron Maiden, Scorpions and Hammerfal. So everything that Sabaton has made music about is based on real war events over the centuries. So the things you sing about in Christmas True have really happened. Sabaton has 3 historians who look up real stories and the events that Sabaton gets sent by Sabaton fan, then historians look up the facts and verify that it really happened.

December 24th 1914, the British soldiers at the front heard Christmas carols being sung by the Germans opposite them. Without receiving any orders to stop fighting many, but not all of these men left their trenches on Christmas morning in peace. They met in no man's land to share camaraderie, gifts, and a soccer ball, as well as taking time time to bury some oftheir dead. within a day or two the fighting had resumed in full. Military command on both sides worked hard to ensure that this would never happen again. These days we all worry about some political topic ruining Christmas dinner. We hope that someday humanity will be able to set aside our differences and just get along for a few hours. Practically no one remembers that 109 years ago we did that. That vague hope for the future has already been a reality, and we are capable of making it real now. "Lest We Forget"

The true difference between soldiers back then was not the flags, not the nation, not even the culture, it was simply that you were on one side of the trenches and the enemy was on the other. It was easy to forget both were still human, that's whats so beautiful about the fact it took place at all, that two forces both whom believe in god and tradition, ceased fire even against the wishes of their commanders and simply embraced each other as brothers on a day where people, families, nations would celebrate as well - they showed each other pictures of their kids, wives, families, swapped stories.... One small bit of peace amidst hell on earth. The next day, they went back to killing each other, because that was and is war.

Almost all Sabaton songs are based upon real historical events, they also make history lessons related to certain songs. Christmas truce is about spontanous cease-fire that happened independently in diferent places across the western frontline betwen the French and German soldiers, in years to follow this had been strictly forbidden by the HQ. Interesting fact: those opera like end vocal was singed by Floor Jansen, vocalist of Nightwish (she is married to Sabaton drummer)

This moment of history needs to be taught everywhere. It's such an important moment that shows how pointless war is and how two sides can get along just fine without their superiors telling them who to kill and hate. Soldiers are only human too and too often that's forgotten. A real cross similar to that one in the video actually does sit on a real battlefield of WW1 and as far as I'm aware it's still there.

Not only is this true but after the truce was over the soldiers refused to fire upon each other on both sides causing many of them to be dishonorably discharged or for most straight up executed. Also during the scene with the soccer ball you hear gunfire and artillery in the background and this is because not every part of the western front took part in the truce. Also I can’t remember when it happened weather it was 1914 or another year but the Russian troops tried doing this in the eastern front during their christmas and were completely destroyed because eastern orthodox celebrates Christmas on a different day as catholics and protestants.

Interesting fact: Joakim Broden, the lead vocalist, never intended to be a singer. When Sabaton was formed he was the keyboard player, and one of the few members who had written some songs. The band asked him to sing them so they could get a feel for the melodies. They had no lead singer yet and asked him to take on the task until they could find one. And yes, the Christmas Truce did happen. Sabaton has a second channel: Sabaton History. A historian named Indy (no, I don't think he's ever melted any Nazis with any ancient Hebrew artifacts) explains all the historical events behind their music. The really sad part was that the next day they had to back to fighting. A lot of them couldn't; they had to be transferred; some were even courtmartialed for participating. You mentioned Nightwish: the end credits were sung by Floor Jansen of Nightwish, who is married to Sabaton's drummer, Hannes.

If a song in your opinion has ended and there still are some minutes of video to be played the artist(s) intended for you to see it. Thanks on behalf of many of your viewers!

I personally like Alfred Anderson, the last soldier of the 1914 Truce to have lived, recount the day 'I remember the silence, the eerie sound of silence,' he said. 'Only the guards were on duty. We all went outside the farm buildings and just stood listening. And, of course, thinking of people back home. All I'd heard for two months in the trenches was the hissing, cracking and whining of bullets in flight, machinegun fire and distant German voices. 'But there was a dead silence that morning, right across the land as far as you could see. We shouted "Merry Christmas", even though nobody felt merry. The silence ended early in the afternoon and the killing started again. It was a short peace in a terrible war.'

Took a quick look in the comments and saw the usual suggestions, but I think they have some much better ones in their older material. My absolute favorite is The Caroleans Prayer/Karolinens Bön, about the Swedish Carolean soldiers and their religion. If you would choose the Swedish version of any song from the Carolus Rex album, go for the unofficial lyric videos, as they have English translation. The lyrics don't always match between Swedish and English versions, so actual translations are needed. If you are into WWII, two under appreciated songs are Rise of Evil and Hearts of Iron. If you prefer slightly older history and maybe want to cry, Gallipoli is a safe bet.

Sabaton was formed in 1999 in Sweden and finally debuted in 2005 (after their first album 'Metalizer' was delayed) w/ 'Primo Victoria'... Their entire catalog of music is based on historical wars and conflicts in the world... Fun fact: Sabaton's current drummer Hannes Van Dahl is married to Floor Jansen of Nightwish - they have 2 kids together. So yes, this was a true event during World War I in Europe - a rare event when soldiers on both sides of the trenches were out of ammunition and short on men in 1914 and the Brits and Germans just wanted a day of peace from the endless fighting on Christmas day... Sadly, there were repercussions as a result of the ceasefire. The commanders were furious and put down the law & dire consequences for soldiers who ceased fighting... As a result, the bitter hostilities escalated into 1916 w/ whole populations of Europeans wiped out in the battlefields... Sabaton covered Motorhead's song '1916' which (the late) Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead wrote about a particularly brutal year of the war for a British soldier. Sabaton was primarily the work of Par Sundstrom (bass) and Joakim Broden (vocals/ keyboards)... both work on music and lyrics for Sabaton based on historical accounts and books... The band struggled for years to find an audience but finally broke big in Europe w/ their 2008 album 'The art of war'... and signed a global record deal w/ Nuclear Blast Records. Unfortunately, the band's members quit after 2012 ... Sabaton had to hire all-new members so that they could tour the USA for the first time and built their fanbase on internet buzz and live shows as they played America almost annually... Chris Rorland & Thobbe Englund (guitars) joined in 2012... Hannes Van Dahl (drums) joined in 2014... and Tommy Johannson joined in 2016 after replacing Thobbe Englund. Sabaton has opened for Nightwish and has toured w/ Floor Jansen's band ReVamp (which is when Floor met Hannes Van Dahl) Some more Sabaton classics - 'Ghost division' ... 'To hell and back' ... 'Bismarck' ... 'Kingdom come' (Manowar cover)... 'No bullets fly'... 'The art of war' ... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

Welcome to Sabaton! Be prepared, it is a huge rabbithole. ;) Some suggestions to next steps: No bullets fly - animated story video Night witches - animated story video Lady of the Dark - animated story video En livstid i krig - life version from Great Tour in Gothenburg (turn on the subtitles, its swedish) Take some tissues, those are also highly emotional ones. And never ever leave Sabaton videos before the very end, you will miss some important and/or beautiful things! Oh, almost forgot. The endcredit vocals.... She was Floor Jansen from Nightwish. She and Sabaton's drummer, Hannes van Dahl are married.

Welcome to the Sabaton rabbit hole! They have so many great songs, all abaout true historical events or people. Some of my favourites are The Last Stand, Soldier of Heaven, Primo Victoria, Bismarck, The Unkillable Soldier, No Bullets Fly (especially the animated video), 1916 (technically a cover of a Motörhead song), Winged Hussars, The Red Baron and En Livstid I Krig (Swedish version of A Lifetime of War, live version with subtitles). I hope you'll enjoy exploring this band!

Sabaton is my favorite Metal band, their songs are true stories and they have a history series which covers the songs in great detail. Quite a few songs get me quite emotional like No Bullets Fly were they tell the story of a German pilot that saved a bomber crew on their way home to England instead of gunning it down, because they were defenseless. Those pilots met up ages later and became best friends and the grandson if I remember correctly, heard that song and showed it to his mom. She recorded a video thanking Sabaton for telling the story of her father and went to the next concert they could attend. Everything is in the Animated video of No Bullets Fly. And on top of that the song is a damn banger!

One of the best and most tragic things about these Christmas truces from 1914 (since there wasn't just one but happened in several places on the front, independent of each other, in case no one mentioned it), is that it shows how terrifyingly easy it is for humans to fight. And how utterly simple it is to stop. Yes, that is your enemy... until both sides stop for a moment and start thinking about the other as "just another human being who thinks and feels and hopes and has people who cares for them just as we do". And then it's suddenly difficult to fight. It's far easier to fight another person, regardless of their appearance, faith, belief and more, when you don't consider them to be as human as you. "Othering" a person is the quickest way to dull the heart. And seeing them as a person is the fastest way to remedy it. But you don't get much war done when your footsoldiers see each other as "just the same as you". Linger not, stranger. Shed no tear. Go back to those who sent us here. We are the young they drafted out To wars their folly brought about. Go tell those old men, safe in bed, We took their orders and are dead. "Inscription for a war", A D Hope

This event happened, in the winter of 1914, the first Christmas of the war. The next year, the commanders for both sides maintained continuous artillery bombardments to prevent a recurrence of such a truce.

Sabaton is singing about the Christmas truce of 1914, a date where both sides of the war met in the middle of no man’s land to meet as fellow humans, showing that even in the darkest days we cannot forget our humanity.

Arrrgh, you committed the capitol offence of stopping the video before it was done. All Sabaton video's should be watched to the very end because every moment has something to offer - in this case you not only missed the credits but some incredible soprano vocals from no other than Floor Jansen, eho is married to Sabaton drummer Hannes Van Dahl, the one in the vid with long blond hair 🤘

This is a True historical event that happened in WW1 which is a big part of British and German history. It happened on Christmas eve 1914 to Boxing day ( the day after after boxing day that is part of Christmas here in the UK) when the hostilities commenced again, but for that short time British and German troops across the line celebrated Christmas with singing Christmas carols together across no man's land then on Christmas day 1914 our British troops and German troops met in the middle of no man's land where they shook hands, played Football (soccer to American's and Canadians), drank together, exchanged gifts, spoke about their loved ones back home, even one man set up a Barber shop and cut hair or shaved British and German soldiers. Where I come from in England we had two Regiment's in WW1 and one of the Regiment's had a Battalion that was involved in the Christmas Truce in 1914. Personally to me this is the real story of Christmas as it was not only a miracle but the most incredible event that bought Humanity and the Christmas spirit on to a place of death and destruction. For a while 150,000 British and German soldiers forgot about the war and just became individual humans together in peace, where they were just ordinary men that shared brotherhood and friendship. BRITISH SABATON FAN 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿💙💛🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦 ps There is a cross on no man's land where one place on the line of the Christmas Truce, was erected in 1999 to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the Christmas Truce and is still there today as a permanent memorial to that incredible true event that happened on Christmas 1914.
