And the answer to the train problem is approximately the speed of sound through the medium, assuming the train is all bare conductive material, the low resistance path somehow leads straight to the train’s conductor, and death is instant. The median freight train length in the US, as of 2021 is ~1.8km; the speed of sound through steel is ~5.1km/s, so assuming the above constraints, the answer is ~0.35 seconds, with a polished bare steel train with some weird insulation practices, with a conductor with a faulty heart and an aneurysm that's just angrily waiting for an excuse. Given the speed of sound through air is ~0.3km/s it would take 5x longer for the conductor to hear that they were about to die, than for them to do so.

i represents the square root of -1, which doesn’t actually exist. i stands for imaginary number, and if you divide one by another you can make real numbers, so since Santa is imaginary he would become real. The domain domain range joke is about hermaphroditism and I’ll just leave it there. There’s a lot in this song that ranges from arithmetic to calculus and number theory, don’t feel bad at all for missing some of it.

"santa claus multiplied by i" In math, i is an imaginary number, and a lot people think Santa Claus is imaginary, so basically it's a "negative times a negative is a positive" kinda statement :)

I love that you reacted to this. It took me so many rewatches and people explaining all the bars before I fully got it. I use the calculator app, ok? It's just such fun wordplay. All those three completely went over my head until I saw someone explaining it and it still made me laugh.

Been loving your reactions for a bit now. I actually teach 7th-grade math. I think a lot of parents get really frustrated nowadays because what we do in math class is demonstrate multiple algorithms to reach the same conclusions, many of which are demonstrated through shapes or more stretched-out processes to allow for more students to find a method that works best for them. When we all were in school, often math class focused on a single algorithm and heavy practice. Now, it's a series of different methods that all students are expected to try and practice in smaller amounts so they can self-select a method that best fits their way of thinking. There are pros and cons to both methods. For instance, the way we all learned means we can all easily communicate the same idea to each other, but many students felt overwhelmed and unable to engage with the learning because the methods did not match how they engaged with number sense. The new method allows for students that may have not been able to enjoy or engage with the content to better do so but comes at the cost of uniformity across all students which means that there can be translation issues between methods because others may not understand the process chosen to achieve the result. At the end of the day, the numbers should all work out to the same answer. It's math, nothing has fundamentally changed. It's mostly the approach vector that has been altered in the hopes that more students will be able to reach an understanding of the subject material. This also is why when I teach negative numbers, I work through number lines and expanded form multiplication to demonstrate how the numbers are being altered. It's the difference between a mechanic giving you advice like "Two negatives always cancel" versus popping the hood and saying, "Here's why two negatives cancel." We still eventually boil the information down to the simple rules, but by taking students through why it works that way, I have fewer students push back on it being true. So as a teacher of math, I do get what parents are saying. We are very used to there being a single path to follow to get the answer. I promise that the path still exists and is one of many taught. We are just trying to make the subject more approachable to a wider variety of thinkers.

I appreciate you laying it out like this because I have been so confused with my daughter's homework, and she's only in 3rd grade. I understand the why, but those of us who learned math the old way know one way of doing things, so while this new method will potentially help kids if they go home and the parents are saying "do it this way" then that undoes what was taught in school. I know this isn't your fault, but it's hard to teach my kid how to do something if I only know one way to do it. This whole thing sounds like it will take a generation to get right, because the teachers like you have to learn how to teach different methods, and the parents have to understand the different methods. This will be frustrating until my kid is a parent and the teachers all grew up with this. Either way, keep doing what you're doing and hopefully some of these kids find it easier to grasp the concepts.

@@TheMadJestyr A. Little aggressive, buddy. Not like I make the decisions on what the curriculum are, I just understand why the decisions were made. Focus that frustration on someone with actual power around that. B. Luckily, multiple courses are offered at all schools to ensure students have well-rounded and appropriate educations. While communication is key, it is luckily covered in a classroom dedicated to it, namely English class, or ELA (English Language Arts). As a bonus, students learn to debate and discuss complex topics through analysis and critical thinking in another of the wonderful courses found all across America, Social Studies class. C. Mathematics is all about learning rules and logical application of those rules. The most common use of this learning is through numeric expressions, such as factoring polynomials, you are absolutely correct. Other topics learned in 7th-grade include Rational / Proportional thinking, Statistical Analysis, Negative Operations, and a bevy of Geometric learnings such as Angle Relationships, Circle dimensions, as so on. While these are being applied to numeric situations, the reality is learning how algorithms work and what to look for to determine patterns is a key strategy to creating debate strategies, accessing deep information in text, and so on. For instance, I noticed that, through reading between the lines, you find parts of math to be ludicrous to have to learn. Let me tell you, polynomial factorization has been a mainstay of Algebra for well over 1000 years, and so unfortunately this is not a part of new math. To keep things simple for you, as you seem like someone that might need simple explanations to understand things, YOU learned polynomials and factoring them in the 7th grade as well. The difference in education is that I teach 3 or 4 methods to approach this topic, you learned one. Ironically, this means YOU are unable to communicate in a multitude of ways, while my students are able to use them to varying levels of success and understand them. That, unfortunately, means that YOU struggle with the communication on these topics. When I wrote that intercommunication of the topics was reduced, I meant inter-generationally, as another reply noted. The kids get it, you don't. D. Alright, I had my fun. Kindly keep your sassy attitude about schools to yourself, I don't have the time for any more of this to waste on someone who can't reason their way across an open field. The variable i is used to define imaginary numbers. An example would be a square root of a negative number, because there really shouldn't be a square root of a negative number because you have to multiply a number by itself to square it and that result cannot be negative because the signs would cancel each other out. A simpler example would be when a kid says infinity and their friend says infinity+1. That is an imaginary number, but it's a real principle in math.
