Even if you choose not to do a reaction, I strongly recommend the official video. There is a movie sectioned into the video telling a more complete story. Its a lot to take in for a first listen, but adds immensely to the song. And honestly the musical performance is FAR better.

To the guitar pick question: it's not that they like "use up" or "go thru" so many during a performance, but they're nearby because there's I highly likely chance you'll drop one or maybe even just straight up break it depending on the music you play lol so they keep more very close by 😊

The song gave me chills the first time I heard it and it still gives me chills now. A true masterpiece. Absolutely do yourself a favor and watch the music video. That is the way I first heard/saw it and the visuals give a whole extra level to this song. It's a shame that as good as this was he messed up the lyrics of the first part of the fast section, and you still felt it! I loved seeing you feel this song for the first time!

First the picks are there in case they drop, lose or break one and also back in the day it was customary for them to throw a ton of the picks out to the crowd during the concert I think it was Kiss that started to have special ones made up for every tour like a souvenir if you got one.

"Now that the war is through with me. I'm waking up, I cannot see. That there's not much left of me. Nothing is real but pain now" "Darkness imprisoning me All that I see Absolute horror I cannot live I cannot die Trapped in myself Body my holding cell Landmine has taken my sight Taken my speech Taken my hearing Taken my arms Taken my legs Taken my soul Left me with life in hell" This is about as anti-war as a song can get. Hetfield did a marvelous job with the melody and lyrics to make a masterpiece.

The movie's called "Johnny Got His Gun" from '71 based on the novel by Dalton Trumbo by the same name. The novel was based on a true story about a Canadian soldier during WW1. That's the movie in the music video. I made the mistake of watching that nightmare fuel when i was kid, and it's given me a lifelong fear of being locked in my mind because i can't hear, move, or speak.
@davidj161
@davidj161 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately James forgot the lyrics to the middle of the song. Sometimes that happens to him live but it’s important for the context. The middle verse that he forgot is “darkness, imprisoning me all that I see absolute horror, I cannot live, I cannot die, trapped in myself, body my holding cell”. And the next part is what he sings twice by accident which explains the landmine has taken his legs eyes arms etc. but yes this is such a powerful song and if you watch the original video to this song it’s very heartbreaking because they play clips from the movie about the soldiers that’s trapped inside his body and he just wants to die and he can’t.

The song is a lot more literal than you think. The book is about a solider who lost his limbs face and ears to an artillery shell and wakes up in a hospital not knowing where he is or if he is even alive. (Across enemy lines too, since he has no literal identity no one knows who he is.) The book then goes in chronological order as he recounts his most precious memories and how he got to where he was, it then jumps back and forth from his memories to his current situation where he is trying to understand what's going on. Once he comes to the realization its actually a pretty painful read since he has no way of communication. I mean obviously it can mean different things to different people but I thought I would put into context the story the song is based on. If you like reading I highly recommend it. Also thanks for the video! This has always been one of my favorite Metallica songs.

Metallica is one of the greatest bands in the world. Even today, they sell out stadiums and put out more energy than most modern performers. If you're looking for another reaction for them, I would suggest Enter Sandman or Creeping Death from 91' live show in Moscow. It was a historical moment after the fall of the soviet union, and the crowd was probably one of the largest you will ever see.

On your question about the guitar picks, sure some break but think about the heat on stage with all the lights and everything shining on the performers. They of course get sweaty and a small bit of plastic can easily slip from your fingers. Can't stop a performance to go after a pick on the ground, so it's much easier to have as many as you can put on the mic stands that way you avoid any potential problems. Doesn't mean you're gonna use them all, but having extras doesn't hurt. They'll also occasionally give them out to fans throughout the show. So there's a lot of reasons to have so many.

In the video, they show clips from the movie where you can see the patient struggling and the intensity of the music builds up as his frustration escalates. The rapid fire of the drums are meant to sound like machine gun fire. The chaotic guitar solo is meant to mimic his mind spiraling out of control. What makes Metallica great is that the music itself supports the story.

A lot of guitarists will have a bunch of picks racked along the bottom of their guitar. At the most extreme end, I saw the late, great Dick Dale in concert a couple of times, and he would go through several picks in the course of one song! His roadie would reload him every few songs. I am sure there are others who make it through a whole show, depending on what their picks are made of. Also, I agree with everyone who recommends that you watch the original video. It's one of the few videos that actually adds to the song.

I think the other band members were fidgeting because of nerves. "One" is VERY difficult song to play. And it's actually easier to perform for a live audience of thousands than in a small room in front of a handful of people. So, I don't think they were getting impatient...just nervous.

It's been mentioned the offical video has clips from the movie Johnny Got his gun. It was based on a book writen in 1936 to oppose US involvement in what became WWII. The book follows the life of Joe Bonham, a young American soldier serving in World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being caught in the blast of an exploding artillery shell. He gradually realizes that he has lost his arms, legs, and all of his face (including his eyes, ears, nose, teeth, and tongue), but that his mind functions perfectly, leaving him a prisoner in his own body. Now go back and listen to song from about the 11 minute mark. It's a killer.

Guitar picks come in different thicknesses. You use different picks to make slightly different sounds. Thinner picks let you strum faster, thicker picks let you pluck more precisely. That's most of the reason you see a lot of picks sometimes.

Been a Metallica supporter since early teens give or take. As time went by i experienced that all the hard partying in the band,was not entirely because theese guys loved to drink. Some of them and especially James drank to forget,to silence and drown his inner demons. I also know that Metallica fans are insanely passionate good and bad. I notice all the urges to do the official music video,and i totally get why they say what they say. But let me go against the current here and praise you for doing this performance as a reaction. I listen to reactors and when you explain that you need theese beforehand interviews to understand the lyrics,i applaude you for doing something different. I grew up loving Metallica and f.eks Prince equally musicwise,and i got teased and bullied for listening to "p*ss* music",stuff like that. As i said,a passionate bunch in good and bad ways. Lars Ulrich on the drums tends to get alot of stick,most of it for things he said or did as much younger. I wish people gave him more props. He is known as The Danish Dynamite on drums. Born in Denmark but lived absolutely most his life in the states,chasing the dream of starting a band. Thats why he has zero amount of accent,eventhough he speaks both languages fluently. I think you are right in your observations lol. Kirk Hammet (lead guitar),Lars (drums) and Robert Trujillo (bass) has probably heard more then enough of James's trauma theese days. All they want to do is play😂 Although Robert and Kirk are very compassionate,and natural peacemakers as individuals. Lars and James were at eachothers throats alot right before and after James's treatment for addiction and theraphy sessions. But there lays a solid amount of brotherly love for eachother at the bottom in both. But they had the 2 biggest egoes when they were in theyr 20s😂 Metallica has suffered some really sad losses along the way too. Cliff Burton the original bass player died tragicly in a accident,and in came Jason Newsted,a fan of Metallica becoming a member. But with the band still griefing over theyr loss,they ended forcing Jason out of the band. I think thats when James realized that he needed help,when he made the second bassplayer and longtime friend leave the band. There is a good interview with Jason telling why he actually quit. And he builds it up perfectly, giving you a full insight in his time in the band. And i think James admitted stuff in theyr documentary (Some Kind Of Monster) that Jason told in his interview,so James basically backed up Jasons words. James explained that he loved Jason so much,that he "choked him into not leaving". Not literally but in his mind he was terrified of losing another member of the band. Thats why when they looked for a third bass player,Robert got a fullblown contract that specified that from the start,he would earn just as much as the others,he would have just as much power,creativity,freedom etc within the band as any of the others had. And he was paied highly as a bonus up front,to show him they were serious about it. Many says Metallica has fallen in quality with age,i say otherwise. They have grown as individuals,artists and a band with age!🥰

Gotta see the official video. BTW, the drummer wanted his drums to sound like gunfire since it's an anti-war song.
