Singer and one of the greatest guitarists ever Leslie West killed it, knocked it out of the park.1970 was a great yr for me especially the music. Actually not many radio stations played this saw it as too extreme. Glad had the Moxy to do so. Loved it then still do.

Leslie Weinstein aka Leslie West was one of a kind. Back in the day he weighed over 400 pounds. He loved his burgers. Later in life he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and lost his right leg above the knee. In 2020 Leslie had a heart attack went into a coma and died. He was 75. R I P. Leslie you will be missed but never forgotten 🙏

First off, Britt... I love you and your channel: instant subscriber! Also, I am a recent devotee to Mountain and Leslie West - he won me over immediately as I see he has won you over as well... When you said, "He's feeling it! He's feeling it!" at about 2:40 in this video, that's the same feeling I got when I first saw this video... Does he shred his guitar or what!?!?!?! He's digging so hard for those notes I'm scared he's going to crack his teeth!... and this is to say nothing of his presence... LARGER THAN LIFE! You think when he walked into a room heads turned??? I strongly encourage you to check out the Woodstock footage of Mountain's performance of Beside The Sea; you'll love it GUARANTEED! ... and never a more humble guy than Leslie West. Check out some of his interviews and you'll love him even more. Wish he was still playing - RIP and taken from us too soon!

I loved Britt's reaction sooo much that I just had to laugh several times (in respect & joy for her diggin' it so much). I saw Mountain live at Hampton Roads Coliseum, in Virginia in December of 1973. I was so blown away by that incredibly profound sound and the image of Leslie West's large frame making that guitar look small and banging out those chords like he was chopping wood, that it was permanently edged in my mind as one of the 3 best rock concerts I'd ever seen. That growling bluesy voice belting out those lyrics was like nothing I'd ever heard before. His performance actually got me interested in listening to more traditional blues artists (Freddie King & Howlin' Wolf} and blues inspired rock like , Leon Russell, Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Clapton, Rory Gallagher, Humble Pie, etc.

This hard rock band has been around since the late 60's-70's. They performed at "Woodstock". "Mississippi Queen" is their most famous song using extensive cowbell sounds. Some other songs were "Long Red", "Never In My Life", "To My Friend", "Crossroader", "Nantucket Sleighride" etc.

In 1970 out band, Storm, opened up for Mountain at Miami University. This is one of the songs they played. Felix, the Bass player was at the time a talent scout for Atlantic-Atco records. He was to come back and sign our band after that tour, but our singer was killed in a bad drug deal. We were so close, and never got that close to a contract again. Both great, and sad, memories.

I didn't get to catch the original lineup back in the day, but I did get to see Corky Laing (the drummer) and Leslie West (guitarist) at the Bull Run in Central Massachusetts back late 90's early 2000's time period. I owned this album in 1971 and it almost got me killed. I was 19 yo and was in my last year of prep school. I was living in a dorm and the football coach and family lived above us. I came home after school and forgot he lived there and put on Mississippi Queen on volume 10. About 2 minutes later, he burst into my room screaming to turn it off that it woke up his baby. From the look on his face and in his eyes, I thought I was dead. Luckily, he just turned around and walked out as I turned off the record player. I have loved this song all my life.

Try the album version. Your observation about Leslie’s voice is spot on, and the studio recording captures all the energy of both his vocal performance and Les Paul through a Marshall sound. Would love to see you react to the album cuts of Nantucket Sleigh Ride, and Theme From An Imaginary Western. Two high points in the Mountain catalog.

@@theoneandonlyfalafel Was it recorded through a Sunn? I’ve seen him live numerous times back in the day and it was Marshall all day long. Seems like every band I played in, in the early and mid seventies had a bassist and a few guitarists using those Fender line cabs and amps. They actually sounded quite nice. As a drummer, I blew my ears out with EV 18’s and horn cabs used as monitors on each side of me. (There’s a photo of Ted Nugents’ drummer on stage with the same setup.) I have no idea what we were thinking back then, but it had little to do with our health. 👈😉 Good stuff, thanks for the correction. Regards
