This song was written by Steve Goodman and he recorded it around 1971. It became a big hit when recorded by Arlo Guthrie in 1972 and most people think of him when they hear the song, regardless of who's singing it. This supergroup is comprised of legendary singers and their album is fantastic. Two are now gone but their music lives on.

My father was a engineer for the Southern Railroad. He worked out Greenville South Carolina. Me and my mother would ride the train Southern Crescent to Gastonia North Carolina to visit family. Twice my father was the engineer taking us there. I was so proud as a little girl , I would tell everyone on train my daddy was running the engine. I started with the railroad in 1995 , I was promoted to engineer in 1998. My father was so proud. My mother hated it. Leave the trains to the men she would say. I was an still am one of the few female engineer’s on my division. I loved my daddy , and I wasn’t the only one, 134 railroad men were at his funeral. 6 engineers carried him. Everyday I ride my father’s magic carpet made of steel as the song says. This song is about the decline of the American passenger train. I love it. Thank you for listening to it

The Highwaymen (Willy Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson) toured together for a few years. Released a couple albums. Four of the best 'country' performers ever to be on stage. Kris Kristofferson is more noted for his songwriting than singing but he does have a great voice. Many people have gone gold on songs he wrote. To get hooked on him listen to 'Help me Make it Through the Night' or "Sunday Morning Coming Down'. He also became a bit of a movie star.

Kris Kristofferson was disowned by his family when he quit the Army, his father became a MajGen USAF. Kris was a Rhodes Scholar, US Army Captain, helicopter pilot, Ranger. He resigned when he was assigned to teach at West Point after a tour in West Germany (my POB). If you get a chance, check out the "Million Dollar Quartet", Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, & Jerry Lee Lewis. They did a jam session at Sun Record Studios in 1956.

Steve Goodman wrote this song years and years ago and it is a favorite of Willie Nelson. After Steve died while still very young Willie recorded it again just so that Steve could be eligible for a Grammy award for best country song. That's one of the best tributes I've ever heard of in country music.

Kris Kristofferson is an absolute national treasure. Purely icon status. Singer, songwriter, actor, producer. He came up writing songs in the 60's and has penned many, many hits, including Me and Bobby McGee, made most famous by Janis Joplin, but, also covered by all 4 members of The Highwaymen. He also wrote Sunday Morning Coming Down, which was a huge hit for Johnny Cash. Kris was the star of the movie Convoy, the crazy tale about a long haul trucker on a quest to help a dear friend.

This is a Steve Goodman song made popular by Arlo Guthrie. I always have to chuckle at the line, "...Passengers will please refrain..." Goodman was on the campaign trail with Edmund Muskie when he was running for President. Muskie was on whistle-stop train tour and Goodman was along to provide musical entertainment to the crowds. At the time Steve was battling cancer and on medication. That, along with whatever he had for lunch or dinner, didn't agree with his digestive tract. He had to use the rest room in the train car. There was a sign stating that the passengers will please refrain from flushing the toilet when the train was not moving. When finished, he figured the waste would just drop on the tracks. Unfortunately, it was a pressurized system that blew it out the back of the train where the Senator was giving his speech. Needless to say Steve did not finish the tour.

Please react to Arlo Guthrie's much earlier rendition of the "City of New Orleans." I think it's a more enjoyable version before Willie puts his personal interpretation to it. As far as the Highwaymen go, I like two of their songs: "Highwayman" and "Ghost Riders in the Sky." Both of these songs feature the other members of the group, along with Willie.

Railroad lover here. The City of New Orleans was the Illinois Central RR's cheaper, coach-only train between Chicago & Nola. The Panama Limited was the super luxurious option. When Amtrak came about in 1971, they dropped the City of N.O. In 1981, they hoped to profit from the publicity & good PR from John Goodman's song (sung by Arlo Guthrey) & re-instated it. It still runs on the old I.C. right-of-way but it's now part of Canadian National.

So many others talked about the group, and the Big 3 of country so I'd like to focus on Kris Kristofferson. Son of an Army General, West Point graduate, Rhodes Scholar, Army Ranger and helicopter pilot. He was selected to teach Philosophy at West Point, but turned it down and left the service. His family was very upset, and before long he was divorced so life was tough for a while. He flew workers to-from offshore to Gulf oil rigs and was also in the National Guard. His songs were getting nowhere, so one weekend he diverted and flew to Johnny Cash's house, landing on the property and giving him a demo. He thought he might get shot, but Johnny took it and recorded "Sunday Morning Comin' Down" and began a string of hits Kris wrote for many people as well as some great country friendships. "Me and Bobby McGee", "For the Good Times", and "Help Me Make It Through the Night" were all hits for other artists. He also has been in over 50 movies but most recall "A Star is Born" with Barbara Streisand. He's a guy who left comfort and took the hard road.

One of the men is Kris Kristofferson, who wrote a little known song, Me And Bobby McGee. When he heard Janice Joplin recording of it, Kris commented that it wasn't his song anymore. Janice owned it. City of New Orleans was written by Steve Goodman and made popular by Arlo Guthrie (son of Woody Guthrie). Steve also wrote the David Allen Coe classic, You Never Call Me By My Name. The train runs from Chicago to New Orleans. The original rail company is no longer in existence but Amtrak still runs The City Of New Orleans. Rode it once with my daughter when she was young. Those four wanted to work together, but couldn't think of a song that suited the four of their voices together. Marty Stuart, a former member of Johnny Cash's band as well as his son-in-law, came across the Jimmy Webb song "The Highwayman." He took that song to them, and they got the name of their group and their first single. Marty Stuart is a brilliant musician in his own right, and he'd be well worth your time to check out. He and his band, The Fabulous Superlatives, play country music inspired by the entire history of the genre, and mix in a little bluegrass from time to time as well (Marty got his start as a very young teenager in bluegrass pioneer Lester Flatt's band). On a side not, you will absolutely adore the clothes they wear.

Nobody has posted about the real world history of this song. Steve Goodman wrote the song while he was riding it- it was dying- 15 cars, 15 riders, 25 sacks of mail won't pay for itself. Amtrak cancelled it. Then the song was a hit, everybody wanted to ride on it- Amtrak had to re-instate it due to polular demand. That was in the 1970's. A version of it STILL RUNS; like 1 day a week, with less cars and fewer features.

When I was 17 After a Hank concert in Minneapolis MN my friend of mine and me got on Hanks tour bus going down the highway trying to act all adultish until the drinks kind of gave us away. We had to show our ID's and 6 hours later Hank himself said Larry{the bus driver} next stop we have to drop these ladies off! Now he had so much respect for us (wait I should add it was one of his squad that invited us on not him and Hank in the 6 hours we spent maybe 2 hrs with calculated with Hank) But we got to a gastion and because they were not safe (lounge lizards and such) Hank himself called law enforcement told them the story and to not charge us for anything but to personally make sure we got home safe however it needed to be done! 4 hwy patrol rides and 8 hr.s later we made it home safe!!! How cool is that! All this said is because Walon has always been my #2 country singer of all time! P.S my Ice-T story is almost as cool if not cooler lmaooo

Amtrack names many of their most popular routes. The City of New Orleans train runs from Chicago to New Orleans and back. I have Ridden on the Capitol Limited that runs from DC to Chicago.

4 country stars got together and sang a song called The Highwayman. They enjoyed the experience and decided to go out on tour. IMO the BEST version of this is Arlo Guthrie's. Willie had the hit with it and sang it on tour. To hear The Highwaymen better, listen to The Highwayman, also in this tour.

You should watch the video "The Highwayman". And yes,it's Johnny Cash. The one with the black vest on is Waylon Jennings and the last one is Kris Kristofferson.

I don't really enjoy country music, musically, but I cannot deny, they create some of the best stories in music!
