Hi Tasha. This great song was written by Larry Cordle and Larry Shell. There are some great young singer/ songwriters in Nashville today. Sadly they get told by the record companies all the time that they are too country for country radio. Check out Mo Pitney, Teea Goans, Lauren Mascitti and Erin Enderlin. All of them love and respect traditional country music, and are really talented. Erin, for example has written songs that have been recorded by some of the biggest names in the business. She wrote the Alan Jackson recording "Monday Morning Church" and many others, as well as being a talented singer and performer herself. All these folks I listed are well worth a listen, and there are more of them too.

I was a DJ at a country station when this came out, and even though it is a GREAT song, there was pressure not to give it airplay because it criticizes what country music had become. It's an indictment of Nashville and what it's turned into. It's only because of George and Alan and later the possum that it even got released at all.

The short, quick answer you’re looking for is Ballads. Ballads symbolize “traditional” in almost any genre in almost any time frame. The traditional songs told stories. The more singers moved away from ballads, the more meaningless those songs became, and in no genre more than County music. There’s more to it, including instrument usage, beat/tempo treads, etc; but the less ballads in high rotation, the less traditional the music is. Traditional music tell stories, moving, heartfelt, relevant stories for it’s time.

As far as I know.. music row is down in Nashville... and it used to be COUNTRY WESTERN musci.. now most of it has a pop sound... Alan and George... all Counry... and they're upset that country ain't country anymore.. If there ain't a steel guitar and a fiddle .. it's not country dang it.

During the 1970's country was going Pop...Barbara Mandrell is famous for her song "I was country when country wasn't cool" In the early 80's, George Strait came on the scene with his Western Swing sound...and brought tradition back into country music. Then Alan Jackson came in with his southern boy charm and solidified tradition back into country music...now with these young bubble gum girls and Bro country sounds ...tradition has indeed been murdered

I absolutely adored John Denver! However, he really wasn’t country. He did a few songs that were country or country like, but he was primarily a folk or folk / pop singer. These two men represented a big part of the neo traditional country movement of their time. Mostly old school country, but with their own flavor to it. Not as far removed as some of what is out today. Although, I must say, Chris Lane’s Fix and Sam Hunt’s Body Like a Back Road are on my playlist too, even though they are definitely country pop.

George Jones also recorded this song. But I can't remember which came first. Jones' might have been a cover, because he did some covers late in his career. Like "Blues Man" by Hank Jr, and he covered an Alan Jackson song, but I can't remember which song. It was a great cover, but I can't find it despite searching "George Jones covers Alan Jackson". I'll find it again if I search more. I know it exists.

I grew up in Texas and still live there. Country music was something I heard everywhere always. These days, I see a farm boy get out of his pickup at the gas station, and what music is he blasting out his speakers? Rap. Not even country rap. Just straight up rap. The rap and hip-hop sound has taken over music as the predominant sound that you hear. It’s the reason that modern “country” music has a rap tinge to it. I wouldn’t say that country music is dead, but it’s certainly moved into the nursing home and hospice has been called.

Changes to every genre takes place but there is the basics that remain the same. Steel guitar, fiddles, story telling, the basics of country going back to Ernie ford is gone and moved into the pop genre. Instead of evolving it’s just been swallowed up into another genre. Brad paisleys early stuff was wonderful but he’s turned into a rock star now. To me, Jamey Johnson was the last of true country. There are always outliers in every genre but looking at Johnny cash and Merle that you mentioned, the music and storytelling is different but the electric guitar and fiddle is there are while different from Roy acuff, the soul of country was still there and had been there until 15 or so years ago when there was still a few true country artists out there. Thank God there is plenty of older music to enjoy.

The common thread of CM over the years has been God, Family and Country living values. Making a living from it used to be, great if it happens, but it wasn't the driving force. Record companies were the ones that got greedy, not the artist and in that greed, they wanted to reach more and more of the younger age group. Unfortunately, the younger age group doesn't have a clue to the struggles of life, good and bad as the older generation does.
