I might just be a nerd, but I find it really cool that the mom and dad is also the mom and dad in the lion king. So they technically played king and queen together in two movies .

James Earl Jones who started as a stage actor and later became a great film actor as well. Madge Sinclair who voiced the role as Simba's mother in the lion king with James Earl Jones. Louie Anderson who was a popular comedian. Arsenio hall had one of the greatest late night shows ever. John Amos who played the father from popular American shows Good Times and Roots as Kunta Kinta who was referenced in this movie. Also a small role by Cuba gooding Jr. who later won an Oscar for his role in Jerry Maguire with Tom Cruise.

My wife & I saw this when it first came out and loved it and it really struck home for us since my family disliked my wife immensely. While my wife's family wasn't too thrilled with me they did accept me. Because of all this, I learned that any guy/gal that one of the kids got with, I didn't have to like but I did have to make sure they'd make them happy. The funniest part for me is sitting on the "Dad" side of the table meeting the prospective husband/wife and recognizing the poor kid's discomfiture and discomfort... This movie was rated R in 1988, I was 13, but somehow convinced my Dad to take me to see it. Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall playing multiple characters could have easily been stupid but instead the characters are fun and so hilarious. You actually forget its them at moments. I will say its hard to believe Akeem could have such humility/ lack of entitlement considering his extremely pampered up bringing. He's a good person and wants to be a loving and supportive husband. The studio actually objected to Murphy being unrecognizable in makeup as Randy Watson and Saul (the elderly Jewish white man)...which, for Murphy, was the whole point...so he compromised on the makeup for Clarence the barber, which made him slightly more recognizable.

Hi Duaffy, how are you? That's great you've watched this comedy classic, I enjoyed your reaction to it and I enjoy your reactions/channel. I highly recommend Trading Places, also with Eddie Murphy and the same director.

I don't know if you caught it, Duaffy, but Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall played multiple parts in the film. Eddie was the lead singer in 'Sexual Chocolate,' and was two of the old men in the barber shop, one of which was the old Jewish man.

In Latinamerica it's called a prince in New York. But all the titles of this film suit very well, no matter if translation is correct or not

One of my favorites. Eddie Murphy was so good in all his roles. Other great movies of his are Trading Places, 48 Hours, and the Beverly Hills Cop movies.

The guys in the barber shop calling him "Kunta Kinte" is a reference to "Roots," by African-American author Alex Haley. His book had been made into a TV miniseries in the late 70s, and was still quite popular ten years later when this film was made. The book traces the author's heritage- his roots- all the way back to his ancestor Kunta Kinte, who was stolen from Africa and brought to the United States as a slave. So the barber shop guys were having a bit of a laugh, calling this African guy after an African character. It's a fascinating book! Long, but worth the read. And/or, if you can find the miniseries, it's well worth the watch. Many African-American actors working in the 1970s appeared in it, including John Amos: Lisa's father, owner of MacDowells in this movie, he played adult Kinta Kinte in the miniseries.

The cut action parts were cut mostly because of copy-right reasons for showing the movie on youtube. I have the movie on DVD and they do show the action parts on the DVD.

16:46 “You gotta go through her papa. That’s a big misconception. People don’t know that about American women. Ain’t got nothing to do with your hair or your pocket. You get in good with American women father, you in good with her. Ain’t that right?” Morris: “He ain’t lying” Clearance: “Get good with her father, you home free.” Saul: “Like a bird” Duaffy thinking: (these men are daydreaming! No women in her right mind nowadays give a crap about what men think especially their father) 21:23 - 21:30 “Maybe it’s because it’s now days but if my father would ever put me in that sort of embarrassment now, he will never hear from me again.“
