the hound has a soft spot for young girls because he had a sister when he was young that his brother was rumored to have killed along with his father. the mountain was than named lord of the house and became a knight, the hound despises his brother and cant stand the fact that someone like him can be a knight. this is why the hound says he is not a knight and does not want to be.

SanSan relationship is one of the things that I think the show didn't do justice. She represents the innocence he lost at such a young age and he is the brutal reality check she needs to learn to navigate that world. He frightens her, but at the same time she kinda trusts him and he mocks her but also does whatever little he can to protect her. I don't feel like the show explored their relationship in the way it should have. Even that Blackwater scene falls flat compared to how it went down in the book.

Loras was wearing Renly's armor in the battle. A large part of Stannis army that he gained from Renly thought they were seeing his ghost. That's why they turned back and didn't stand their ground. Charles Dance's portrayal as Tywin Lannister is BRILLIANT. He's the only GoT character whose performance gives me chills. Mr. Dance is a classically trained Shakespearean actor, so I shouldn't be surprised. Fun fact. Cersei has a complicated relationship with Sansa. I think, as this episode in particular demonstrates, she sees a lot of herself in Sansa with the two of them being married off to a king without any say in the matter, so she's sometimes sympathetic and tries to instruct her, and yet at other times she seems to almost despise her - possibly because she sees Sansa appear to meekly follow along the same path, as she did, and not fighting back, as she wishes she had.

In the books the battle was quite more different, with more tactical play, at hand. For example Baratheon army approached by land and sea, not sea only. Tyrion used his clansmen to harass Stannis army approach, but it was to no avail, for Stannis had set fire to the forest, and forced the ambushers out. Falling for the Wildifre trap on the sea, was done by Ser Imly Florent, Stannis led the ground force. Yes they relied on numbers to take the city, but it was because they did not know Tywin was coming, with 80,000 men to stab Stannis force of 20,000 in the back. City garrison itself was outnumbered, but not very significantly 2:1 or 3:1, and Baratheon assault force had been doing a good work in nearly taking the city. But when Tywin arrived with 80k cav it was over.

That's a brilliant insight into her character. It explains why she is on the verge of murder-suicide until Tywin enters the throne room. It's her mania for control, as much as fear of the enemy, that leads her to that drastic step. Left unable to fight, and not trusting anyone fighting for her, she grabs desperately at the one thing she can control. It's kinda pathological.

Yes, in Stannis' great strategic thinking, he did not factor in that he would be eternally pissing off the second-richest family in Westeros, putting the Tyrells into an alliance with the richest family in Westeros, the Lannisters. An alliance of Highgarden and Casterly Rock controls basically the central core of Westeros, including the lands with the most productive agriculture and the best strategic military position. But Stannis is "the rightful king by law" so I suppose all that doesn't matter to him. Of course, he could seek an alliance with the Starks but, oh wait, he's too proud for that, too.

After Renly's death they said all his men flipped to Stannis, all EXCEPT the Tyrells. You saw Margaery and Loras crying in front of his body and both Catelyn and Littlefinger separately saying they can't avenge Renly from the ground. Then next episode we see Littlefinger in Tywin's camp during that "did he notice Arya" scene. But that whole cat and mouse game with Arya and Tywin was a red herring. The real crux of that scene was Littlefinger proposing an alliance between House Lannister and House Tyrell, the Lords of the Reach. It was as subtle as it was well placed. "Margaery wants to be queen I take it" Tywin asks Littlefinger. None of this would've happened if Littlefinger didn't pick up on how ambitious Margaery was when he visited Renly's camp. "No, I want to be THE queen" she had said. All the chess pieces throughout the season, even the unassuming ones, build to Blackwater. The Lannisters now have their southern flank covered. With supplies and men coming in, the tide of the war has turned completely. But who will be the true power in the capital itself? Them or Tyrells?

The ending of Blackwater is chef's kiss. Cersei's talks with everyone all through this episode is great, but that final monologue with Tommen is what you call "aesopian". Side by side is the imagery of Loras Tyrell in Renly's armor and helm, cutting through the Baratheon lines under the moonlit night looking like an ethereal entity. Then we have Tywin's grand entrance in the throne room to Rains of Castamere. Too good! Battles in period movies are all about the jazz of the combat, whereas Blackwater is just a backdrop, a vehicle to tell the story of the characters. It's not just some spectacular action p0rn. The realism of the moment and the psychology of the different characters in the process of reckoning with their own mortality is as important as the actual sword fighting. War isn't glorified or made to seem desirable. You're alternatively torn between rooting for either side and no one at all.

Roughly once a season the author of the books writes an episode. This was that episode for season 2. Because of his position and in depth knowledge of the characters, he's really able to flesh out every single second of screen time to give you insight into relationships you might not be thinking about otherwise. Getting such a new unique perspective on Cersei was especially surprising and rewarding at the time. Glad you liked it so much! It's such a fun episode to watch for a first time.

Tyrion is disgusted with what is happening in front of him and really has a look of shame and regret. I would like to bring your attention to some lines from previous episodes where the ending of this episode was set up: As Renly lay dead, Loras shouted, "I will put a SWORD through his [Stannis's] righteous face!" Baelish asked him, "What do you desire most in this world?" to which Loras replied, "Revenge." Baelish talks him out of fighting straight away and dying, saying, "If it is justice that you want be smart about it." After Loras walks out Baelish finds out Margaery's motives too: "I want to be THE queen." In a later episode Baelish reports to Tywin what he's been working on recently (it's the scene where no-one pays attention to the dialogue because they're too worried Baelish will recognise Arya). He pitches the idea that "a moment of chaos affords opportunities" and says, "After the Lannisters and the Starks, the Tyrells command the largest host. [...] The Tyrells have not yet declared for any of the surviving kings. Loras wants revenge, he blames Stannis for Renly's death. And Margaery..." Tywin predicts the end of the sentence: "Wants to be queen." Tywin is reluctant and points out the Tyrells rebelled and joined Renly, but Baelish suggests only punishing that treason "after Stannis and Robb Stark are defeated." (See what he's setting up here?) Baelish confirms the Tyrell host returned to their home and he could leave to meet them that night if Tywin agreed. This episode is the culmination of these pretty minor and subtle scenes. Great writing, keep looking out for subtle hints in the next couple of seasons!

It’s not explained very well in the last few episodes, but Littlefinger was actually sent to Highgarden (the seat of House Tyrell, Renly’s former allies) to broker an alliance between them and the Crown. So the cavalry arriving is Tywin’s host from Harrenhal, along with Loras’s army from the Kingdom of the Reach. Loras is actually armored with Renly’s old suit of armor, so as to strike terror into the hearts of Renly’s former soldiers who joined Stannis after his death, as tho the ghost of Renly had returned to curse all those who betrayed him. And yes, Kingsguard Ser Mandon Moore intentionally attacked Tyrion on the field of battle, all will be explained in time.

Throughout Season 2 Robb Stark is pillaging the Westerlands (seat of House Lannister) to bait Tywin out of Harrenhal (which is in the Riverlands, seat of House Tully). So they were basically side by side, both holding out in each others' lands trying to see who blinks first. But Tywin realizes Harrenhal in the middle of enemy territory is indefensible, saving the capital is more important. So he abandons the defensive garrison at Harrenhal and instead of going west towards Robb, he takes the Lannister forces to a night march 6 o'clock of Harrenhal, straight down into King's Landing. He has Loras Tyrell with him who is wearing Renly's armor to the bewilderment of the Baratheon forces. With Stannis crushed and with House Tyrell, Lords of The Reach, now alligned with the crown, Robb not only let Tywin's army escape from the Riverlands, he's now pretty much cut off from King's Landing. Tywin has out maneuvered Robb and Stannis.

The reason Stannis looked like he had a basic attack, was because that's all they could really do via their ships.. all of the city is surrounded by rocky waters and cliffs, aside from the mud gate.. Which is a little tiny stretch of land. If they attacked the main gate and sieged, they would of been flanked from behind. They were betting on the Lannister army not being there (Being distracted by the North), if there was no wild fire, they would of breached the city quiet easily. Over confidence.

In the books, the Hound and Sansa have a relationship that the show only hints at. He was often her 'security detail', and he was enraged by Sansa's innocence and foolishness regarding knights and chivalry and such. He terrified her with horrible stories about his background and enforcement actions for the Lannisters. However, it degenerated into him weeping over his confessions and threatening to kill if she ever said anything about it. While this did Sansa little good to be sure, it might have actually been 'therapy' of a sort for him and did him some mental good.

One of the best episodes, IMHO. What this reveals is that, by killing Renly, Stannis has alienated the Tyrells, who control the most productive lands in Westeros and are thus the second-wealthiest house in the country. Now the Tyrells are allied with the Lannisters, and their combined wealth and military power dwarfs what Stannis has (left). Together, they control the central core of Westeros geographically, although the Riverlands (Tully territory) are disputed by the Starks. But, since Stannis is the "rightful king by law" none of this seems to bother him -- at least not enough to factor it into his strategy.

Cersei and Sansa dynamic is so interesting. i will not say Cersei really cares for Sansa, but she certainly feels some kinda empathy since she sees a lot of herself in her. Sansa was in love with Joffrey, until he started treating her the way she did and revealed himself. Cersei was "sold" as a broodmare to a man she didn't like it, but she tried to love him (as she said to Ned stark and Robert in season 1), but Robert showed up to a extremely abusive and drunken person. Sansa: you were Robert's Queen... Cersei: and you will be Joffrey's, enjoy!

Also mainly because they were clearly outnumbered with the Tyrell forces joining the battle.

Great reaction, guys! I really enjoyed your pre-episode discussion. Spartan’s assertion about the dragon glass (2:53) is correct. You may have missed it, but when Sam found the dragon glass he mentioned that it’s proper name is obsidian, which is produced by rapidly cooling lava. In the GoT world, it’s more likely the result of “lava” created by dragon’s fire. Props to Spartan for predicting who the major players of this battle would be (6:23) before the episode even started! Even if you didn’t think it would happen this soon, it was pretty insightful. One last thing, it’s Jaqen H’gar, not Jaqa H’gar. There’s an ‘n’ at the end of his first name.

The Hound isn’t afraid of being wounded or even dying. But he is terrified of burning. Spartan kept waiting for Stannis’ non-linear trump card. It came, but for the other side. That was Tywin, the saavy battle veteran, riding in and saving the day, finishing what his half-man son started.

'They even have A ladder...' What did you expect them to bring to a siege on a castle? A trampoline?

So aside of Loras (who was wearing Renly's armor and carrying a Renly-style Baratheon banner) - the rest of the horsemen are wearing Lannister armor and you see Lannister (red & gold lion) banners. Lannister helmets open in the front like gates. It's something you notice upon a rewatch that you don't notice on your first viewing.
