The fandom around IT is insane, especially when it comes to Eddie and Richie. There are tons of incredible fanart and fanfictions about them. When I read the book as a teenager, I immediately ate it up and just KNEW that they had to be a thing. Imagine my joy when the movie played even harder into it.

@@seesawseesaw to be fair mainstream audiences are for the horror and clown, actual fans of the story were there for the character work. But tbh I remember that eddie’s actor for the mini series, which was produced like 4 years after the book came out, did explicitly say even the show creators back then had discussed to make reddie canon and voted not to. So the actors themselves were overly touchy bc they felt like they owned it to the characters to somehow express that bond, and then they had richie be with a coworker that mike narrates acted and looked like eddie. But i feel like especially their dynamics as adults in the movies (bc chapter 1 was pretty well done in that) was not all the way there. Books and show explored that even when they were scared of the queer aspect of it. Idk why the movies didn’t lean more on it when they actually made it more explicit. Like why take away eddie’s dying thought being about richie??? Why take away eddie’s struggle with the church?? Why take away richie feeling conscious of touching his male friends?? There’s arguably soso much missing there is such a damn shame :/ especially because they had perfect casting.

fun fact: in the first movie richie actually lies about his fear being clowns (hence him looking around to find something to say) when they are talking about their fears on the bench. his worst fear was actually people finding out he was gay / his crush on eddie. which is why penny was singing "i know your secret your dirty little seceret" and that whole scene in general in conclusion: pennywise is homophobic

I know IT seems like a supernatural horror but it's really not it's just very meta: Pennywise represents childhood trauma. We can also see several symptoms of trauma disorders like PTSD or cptsd such as dissociation, panic attacks, anxiety, etc. In the characters. The memory loss they experience as they move further away from Derry signifies the actual memory loss that often comes with trauma but also dissociation. There's also some implications about how community, friendship and reframing ones own view of triggers/working through trauma can lessen symptoms. It's also common for trauma to catch up on you so people who have been traumatised as children could easily feel the repercussions sth like 27 years later, especially when confronted with triggers. As a person with a mental illness relating to childhood trauma this is my all time favourite horror movie bc it's so. Spot. On. And. Genius.

i seriously love this movie. and the first one too. and yeah, agreed. its not scary. this coming from someone who so easily gets scared. and like okay, there are jump scare moments, and it gets loud, but i'm okay watching it. truly for me, the actual "scary" thing about it is the real life aspects of it. pennywise who? fuck that guy. the abusive dad, the controlling mom, the bullies, the adults who ignore, prey on, and attack the kids. the different topics touched on; homophobia, fatphobia, domestic violence, racism, that to me, is where the real horror lies. that plus the whole cycle of abuse and how things that happen to you as a kid can still affect you in your adult life. it happened with all of them in different ways. and sometimes you overcome it and sometimes you succumb to it. just yeah. i could talk about this movie for ages. loved your reaction to it. your editting always makes me laugh.

Richie and Eddie ❤😭 Also the scene with Adrian being beaten and killed is actually based on a real life homophobic crime that happened in the 1980s when Stephen King was writing the IT book; Charlie Howard was a gay man who was out in Maine with his boyfriend one night when he was was chased, harassed, assaulted, and murdered by a gang of teenagers - his boyfriend survived and pulled a fire alarm. He was thrown over the State Street Bridge into the Kenduskeag Stream; like Adrian, Charlie was asthmatic, he couldn’t swim and he drowned while having an asthma attack. Interestingly, a lot of IT fans have noted the similarities between Adrian and Eddie Kaspbrak in that they’re both presented as asthmatic (though Eddie isn’t actually asthmatic, his mom just made him believe he was) and Eddie in the book has a visible reaction to hearing about Adrian’s gay bashing. There’s a lot of evidence that supports the idea of Eddie being a closeted gay man in the book, like when Pennywise (as the leper) approaches him outside Neibolt and offers him a blowjob, indicating a fear not only of getting an illness or disease but the possibility of getting one by acting on his homosexual desires. His mom is shown to be homophobic (unsurprising given that the teen part of the book is set in the 50s) He’s also very unhappy to be married to his wife, who he only married because she was like his mom in a lot of ways and so it continues that abusive manipulative relationship he had with her, and he feels the only way to love his wife is by being away from her. Richie is definitely either gay or bisexual, and while it’s more touched upon in the film than the book, Richie and Eddie definitely have a VERY close bond in the book and it’s something people have been picking up on for YEARS. For example, Richie pinching Eddie’s cheeks and calling him “cute”, one of them offers the other a “lick” of their “rocket” lollipop, etc. There are many people who’ve explained it better than I have and gone into more detail, but it always confuses me when people say Reddie is random or whatever because it’s so clearly there if you look. Great reaction, by the way! 🫶🏻
