As far as I aware, it was 1000 years and even historians don’t know why they stopped voyaging. But yes, it’s true.
@karamello_r921
@karamello_r921 Жыл бұрын
Voyaging didn't officially stop until colonization, which meant border control, and therefore people couldn't sail out to neighboring islands. There is evidence that after majority of the liveable Islands were settled upon, people from different islands would constantly sail between each other for certain resources, and all islands were extremely aware of the inhabited and uninhabited islands surrounding them.

fun fact: Moana was originally gonna be written by Taika Waititi, but he just wasn't really feeling it, and he doesn't like writing something that he's not passionate about, so he "bailed on it", but made sure there were people from that culture involved even without him. He instead went and made Thor: Ragnarok.

He did a pass on it early on, but I'm not sure how much of what he wrote was still in the movie.

taika wasnt passionate about a story about his culture, but he was passionate about taking the piss out of hitler! (no hate, i know he's jewish and he made a great film and everyone should disrespect hitler like that, it just sounds funny to me when its put like that)

Moana is kind of a mesh between Polynesian, Micronesian, and I believe Melaneasian (but dont quote me on the Melanesian part Im not well versed to confirm) cultures. There were many legends shoutouts throughout the movie (like Maui talking about he killed and buried the eel and gave us coconuts). The nose greeting is a Maori & Hawaiian greeting. The headpiece Moana was wearing is a tuiga (Samoan), which is a headpiece for the high cheifs' daughter. The crab Tamatoa also stems from a legend. (I'm hoping other PI's will find your video and grace us with more precise facts because I only know of surface level things. The voyagers were also a shout out to Micronesians who have helped bring back wayfinding to the Hawaiian islands through Papa Mau. The one thing I would love to point out is that I don't believe people outside our culture were able to grasp Maui's chant at 29:53. He was doing the haka. Which is a Maori war chant. By doing that, he showed us that he was ready to die in battle. I cried a lot in this movie, lmao. Anywho, like I said, while I am a Pacific Islander, there is so much I don't know and am still learning, but those were just some fun tidbits for ya. 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾

Samoans also rubbed noses... called sogi. Unfortunately we no longer do this. But yup, plenty of Pan-Pacific representation.

Fun fact. Dwayne’s younger daughter still doesn’t believe that he is Maui, though he has sung ‘you’re welcome’ like 1000 times for both his daughters

Moana was able to do all of those things because she was chosen by the ocean. it's as simple as that. she was the chosen one.

The rocks song? Yes, yes it is Polynesian mythology. My dad was stationed in Hawaii and the school made us all see a play about Maui lassoing the sun to lengthen the days and give the crops time to grow.

Maybe Moana has a far distant ancestor thousands of years ago who was a demigod so she has a little bit of blood like. At the same time it’s a Disney movie and anything can happen

Yes, the nose touching is tradition. It's used a lot here in NZ. "The Hongi - When Māori greet one another by pressing noses, the tradition of sharing the breath of life is considered to have come directly from the gods. Through the exchange of this physical greeting, one is no longer considered manuhiri ("a visitor") but rather tangata whenua, "one of the people of the land"." Also Maui legends are quite common in the pacific. NZ has one: "Māui is credited with catching a giant fish using a fishhook taken from his grandmother's jaw-bone; the giant fish would become the North Island of New Zealand, known as Te Ika-a-Māui. In some traditions, his canoe (waka) became the South Island, known as Te Waka a Māui."

yes you are right, for a great time in history polynesian people stopped voyaging the sea, this movie is their theory of why we stopped.
