I think it was a really sweet little detail that anytime Mariano was in a scene he didn't just have stupid googoo eyes for Isabella. He noticed when Mirabel was under the table. It really felt like he wanted to be a brother to her and a part of the family. As someone who was frequently just ignored it was something of a comfort that Mariano was going to be a nice addition to the family regardless of which side he married into.

I think he was a little too himbo for me but I agree that it was a nice touch that while he was crushing on Isabella he still seemed to genuinely care for the whole family.

Right?! I don't hear anyone talking about him! Because they really made an effort to prove that he's NOT a "big dumb hunk" -- IF you're listening, you'll catch it. He might be conventionally handsome, but that's not his fault. He writes poetry and music, he takes care of his mother, he's interested in knowing all the other members of the family, and he's a hard worker. What more could we ask for Dolores, honestly??

I don't think he genuinely had a crush on isabella. just like isa, he's also promised a marriage bc of his mother. they decided it for him. he just wants to love * someone * but he didn't have it for isabella and was pretending just like she was. but when he realised how much dolores loved him, he felt it back.

I actually saw an article today where the journalist said that it was an overhyped, "meh" movie -- she said it was too plotless because it didn't have a specific villain, that there were too many useless characters, and she preferred the regular 1-3 main characters, and that the whole thing was absolutely nothing new. And I thought, when have any of our stories EVER been "new"? We humans tell the same kinds of stories over and over because they're OUR stories. They're what we relate to. _Any_ and _every_ person who watches this can relate to something different in it. That's the *_power_* of having like _12_ main characters, and a simple but _meaningful_ story about generational trauma. Either that journalist straight up didn't HAVE a family, or she currently has NO imagination or empathy 😂

I think particularly when it comes to universally popular current films, there are some critics who intentionally take the unpopular hard-line negative stance. The state of journalism is driven by clicks and ad revenue and nothing drives attention like controversial opinions.

Strong believer that Mirabel had the gift of Empathy the entire time. I also liked that Isabela and Mariano looked like Abuela and Abuelo, Which was why Abuela was so intent on Isabela having the perfect life with him. She was trying to recreate their story with a happy ending.

I can’t think of any Disney movie without a villain tbh. This one was purely about family and I loved it. Such a simple premise and setting for a movie but it was perfectly done. The music is so killer too, my favorite music from any Disney musical EVER. I live the contemporary feel they’ve added by using Lin Manuel Miranda.

That’s why it felt rushed at the end. Disney alone had no experience with this more interpersonal and emotion based story. They didn’t understand that the story building when there is no villain needs to be less exponential and more constant throughout then it needs to sit in the despair. We need a chance to breathe and really sit in what just happened. They don’t really give you that opportunity and immediately go into the happy ending. I’ve seen comments discussing how they could have done this while also keeping the river scene and they are better than the actual ending. Though I still love the movie!

Quick notes for the movie! The Madrigals get their gifts when they are 5. Bruno has been in the walls for 10 years. All of the Madrigals have images on their outfits that pertain to their gifts. Abuela was so scared of losing her home, her life, again she lost sight of the fact that the miracle was for the family. She went from losing her home, to watching her husband get murdered, to having to lead a town while raising three kids on her own. She never had a chance to process her grief and trauma so she ended up unintentionally passing on the fear of losing everything because they weren't enough to her kids and then their kids. It's generational trauma. Love this movie for tackling big issues in a hopeful way.

Can we talking about Bruno being a homie? Bruno resembles his father. He's selfless, loves his family enough to separate himself from them and 'sacrifice' himself if that means that his family would be happy. Just like his father did. He was ready to take the blame for the house breaking so Mirabel doesn't turn into him He was described as Seven foot frame by Camilio (shape-shifting boy) probably because he was a kid and Bruno just seemed tall to him. Plus after years of hearing bad stories about it, it probably elevated that image to about seven foot, towering, creepy man.

Just watched it... do you think it's actually Bruno, or is it just Dolores's interpretation of him, how she remembers her uncle Bruno? Like when Camilo remembers him as a seven foot tall, green-eyed, and creepy with rats up and down his back... Bruno is actually kinda short, and sweet-natured looking, it's just how Camilo remembers him since he was a little boy when Bruno left and his power was considered creepy by everyone around him. I think Dolores just remembers him as a sneaky figure l, always in the background.

I was the SAME WAY about Dolores. When I heard her sing her part in We Don't Talk About Bruno, I fell in love. Hers was the BEST part, closely followed by Camilo's part. Pepa and Felix's part was very cute though but Dolores wins. Best song for me is Surface Pressure. Related to it on so many levels and Luisa brought sexy back with the whole thing. Man, this movie is AMAZING.

The reconciliation scene made me cry. I’d like to throw in the theory that Maribel‘s gift is talking to Casita. The only other character in the movie who actively talks to Casita is Abuela, who also doesn’t have a gift since she’s the keeper of the candle, so Maribel is like her successor! So basically: Maribel is the keeper of the magic and Casita‘s friend :)

Abuela Alma is the antagonist, but that doesn't mean she is the villain. She got too caught up in protecting the miracle that she lost her way with the family, to the point where the family aren't happy with their roles. Mirabel's gift was being able to get the family back together. She is the glue.

I see Encanto as a commentary on ableism - Mirabel is excluded because she doesn’t have the same abilities as everyone else, but she is still an integral part of the family and has her own talents outside of the magic. (Her outfit has little features from everyone else - dumbbells for Luisa, flowers for Isabella, etc). I love that they didn’t give her a gift at the end because the family has learned to appreciate her for being herself, and she doesn’t need to be “fixed.” Loved your commentary, I’m glad you liked the movie!

Nah that doesn't make sense. If she had such gift, her magic door wouldn't have disappeared at the ceremony. The only explanation is that the candle gave her the role to look after the family, like Abuela did, but not a "gift" per se.

@@roseberryy_ ok but what about the mandela effect since mirabel has both the butterfly and flowers on her dress, the mandela effect is all about messing with your beliefs and what you think is there, and plus she wiped the magic off on her clothes so that can also be a reason. I do agree with her being the new keeper of the house but i feel like mirabel is part of much bigger theory than that. Disney is always trying to make their animations seem more deeper than what we see by hiding or placing details in movies.

Mirabel doesn't have a gift or a door. You can consider her abilities a "gift" but not in the same way they have gifts. I believe she's what you would call the anchor. She grounds the family by balancing them out since they all have magic. She's the normal one that keeps them humbled. And while they're all "special" to most normal people, she's the only normal one which makes her the special one of the family. (Aside from the dads but I guess there's no pressure on them. lol
