YOU GUYS!!!! I'm FINALLY back with another reaction video! I am so sorry for the delay, I had technical difficulties (more info in the description) so I had to edit this video in a very different way to try and keep it entertaining for you guys despite the issues. It took me a lot longer than usual to edit because of this. I also got all 4 of my wisdom teeth out when I was very close to finishing the video, and that left me pretty much bed ridden for almost a week. (It's been a whole week now and my mouth is still healing from it.) I had a lot of dizziness after the procedure so I only went on the computer to do homework and then went right back to bed because it would hurt my head to look at the screen even in night mode, so that was an unexpected set back as well. Also I have a lot of homework due this week and a midterm on Tuesday so there was just A LOT going on so hopefully my next video will be out a lot sooner lol. Last thing I wanted to mention, I am experimenting with the amount of ads on my videos. Please just let me know (kindly) if this is an obnoxious amount of ads and/or disturbs the viewing experience and I will put less on my next video if that is the case. Anyway, ted talk over lol. Thank you all so much for watching and for the support despite it taking me so long to get videos out at the moment. Your support means so much to me as making videos is something I really love to do so thank you soooo much and I will see you all in my next video!

Amazing fact it will blow you mind the girl named kaya at the start of the movie is actually ashikata fiance who gave him the locket. Also it is completely confirmed that she was pregnant with his kid. And his descendent from her passed down his legend. The movie name was first supposed to be legend of ashikata. That is why he has more screen time then monoke. You can even check the wiki fandom of girl name kaya it is real. The japanese women hated his character for him being a cheater. He was shown as brother to her for the western audience.

@@sertaki Grave is Heartbreaking to watch but it's an extraordinary film nonetheless. It's upto yourself if you wanna rewatch it not. I will, not very soon but I will. It was also the last film I watched from Studio Ghibli for the same reason that I couldn't bring myself to it from the things I heard about it. I haven't watched Ronja yet but maybe I will. Also What are your thoughts on Tales from Earthsea? Because I enjoyed that film more than like everyone. I don't believe it's the worst film of their repertoire. It has some problems but I kinda connected with the story and the characters. My Neighbors The Yamadas is what I believe the worst one from their catalogue. I really didn't like that film.
@sertaki2 жыл бұрын
@@marmiksaini I did enjoy watching Tales from Earthsea, but it's definitely not among their greatest. I do like its weirdness and the feeling of being thrown into a huge world without getting everything explained however (cause really, that's what happens here). And it's also quite sad in a way, since Miyazaki originally had wanted to make an adaptation of Earthsea for a long time, but when the studio eventually got a deal with Ursula K. LeGuin, it was his son who directed it - and he went off in a strange direction that has almost nothing to do with the books, which really disappointed LeGuin. I have not yet seen My Neighbors the Yamadas. :D

I really enjoyed your reaction! And I'm glad you were inspired to learn something new. A bit of historical context: leprosy is infectious, and before we had a handle on disease generally, people who got it were sentenced to a slow, agonizing death as various parts of their bodies literally rotted away. These days, it's curable if caught in a reasonable amount of time (and treatable if not), but in the past the only treatment was to isolate people so that they couldn't infect others, either in "leper colonies" or left alone to die. Often they would be dehumanized so that the community could cope with sentencing them to this horrible fate. The able-bodied people who walked among them to give them care and kindness were saints, both in the sense of extraordinarily compassionate people and the sense of literal, Catholic saints. There's a sub/dub debate here which I'm pretty neutral on. But I will say, the Disney dubs of Ghibli films are top-notch. I'm amused that at the end, we get your dubbed reaction to a subtitled film.
@ironrocker1003 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that leprosy is not an infectious disease. Part of the reason what we see in this movie and what happened in real-life with lepers is that leprosy is the result of various maladies that cause a person to look hideous and deformed and thus a leper. A person could catch these diseases and become a leper but a leper could not pass on their leprosy to a new person after the disease is gone thus the common response of isolating lepers and leaving them to die was completely pointless and cruel.

An interesting aspect of this movie are the lepers. In Japan, people suffering of leprosy were historically utterly octrasized, up to very very recently. Instead of getting care, they were sent to leper colonies and completely isolated from society. Even after good cures for the disease were developed, this practice continued for a while and the former victims face struggles reintegrating into society. Many stay isolated even now. The strict laws that were behind these practices were only finally abolished in 1996, a year before this movie came out, so it happened during its development. I would say including these characters was a very direct commentary on Japanese society.

Try Whisper of the Heart followed by The Cat Returns. They are different from this and from each other, but are excellent and connected. In fact there are four Ghibli movies that are LOOSELY connected. Totoro (which shows a side of Japan that is gone), Pom Poko (which shows the end of that era), Whisper of the Heart (which shows life in the result of the end of the Totoro era), and The Cat Returns (which takes a fantasy story from Whisper of the Heart and makes it into its own movie). All are good and all are very different. Of them all my favorites are Totoro (full title: "Tonari no Totoro" or "My Neighbor Totoro") and Whisper of the Heart. And THANK YOU. Although many of the dubbed versions are just fine, I still prefer the subtitled. If you do Nausicaa (also HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended) I particularly suggest the subtitled version.

Ok, but during Edo Period (1600-1860) the Shogun forces were expandin North of the Honshu island, fighting against Emishi and Ainu tribes, and trying to eradicate Shintou with Buddhism (therefor the buddhist monk, in this movie, want to "kill" the God of the Forest more than anything else)... this movie is less simbolic and more accurate that you think it is.

I may have worded that horribly but hopefully someone reading this understands. Also, tiny thing but I appreciate you going back to read the subtitle when it zoomed by, a lot of reactors would've turned a blind eye and just nodded as if they understood what was said. One thing I absolutely love about Miyazaki is that nothing is ever dumbed down to just being black and white, right or wrong, its all grey, which is accurate to reality. Other movies would have had nature being right and people being wrong - environment issues are almost always portrayed this way in media. Not this movie though. The leader of Iron city saved people from awful faiths (the lepers, the brothel women, etc.) and mostly wanted to ensure prosperity to better the life of everyone under her care. The forest beings are seeing their old ways dwindling and their land encroached upon, but they care little for the many lifes they snuff out, as they deem humans to be utterly worthless and irredeemable. They also bicker among themselves and disagree on how to do things to justifiably defend themselves, leading to massive amount of death within their ranks. So depending on who you ask, either side could been seen as evil, but neither really is. The only real bad is the unseen Emperor and his desire for conquest and immortality, but I love the fact that it is only accessory to the story and not the focus. The focus is these 2 sides that are both correct in their own ways, and how ultimately the resolution to the conflict needs to be coexistence, or face annihilation.
@gabrielesolletico65425 сағат бұрын
A nice comment. If you're interested, during the Edo Period (1600 - 1860) the Shogun was fighting a war against the Emishi tribes in the North of Honshu, in which this movie should take place. There really were almost preistorical villages, like Ahitaka's one, and industrial ones, like Lady Eboshi's one, and there were firearms along side with samurai, swords, armors, bow and arrows. The Emperator used to sovvention Buddhist Shrine, and gave them large portion of the new conquisted land. So therefore the Buddhist Monks were doing their part, mostly by converting locals to Buddhism: in doing so, they tried to convince the locals that the local deities they worshipped were Demons, and not Nature Gods, and that hey should abandon them to converse to Buddhism. THIS IS THE RESON why the Buddhist Monk in the movie is seen as a villain, and why he's trying to "Kill" the God of the Forest: he want local people to stop worship the Kami, often seen more as spirit who incarnated and protected local real places (especially forest, rivers, ponds etc. etc.) rather than as personification of the force of the nature...

I think this movie is an absolute masterpiece when it comes to blurring the lines between good and evil. On one hand the forrest spitit can give life on the other hand it can kill. On one hand the leader woman of the village is a strong character who helps her people, on the other hand she is reckless and greedy. You can never really fully agree with any one it seems.

Something not often mentioned is all in all Miyazaki movies the mouths are reanimated per language to match the dialogue. Also, I think you skipped the importance of Kaya. She's the young lady who drew her knife to stand and fight against the first corrupted boar god. Kaya knew she was going to die and chose to do so for her friends, until Ashitaka saved her. Subbed because why not :)
@aolanikunisan3 жыл бұрын
In the translation it states her as Ashitaka’s little sister, but in reality she was supposed to become the wife of Ashitaka. Since he was banished from the tribe and can no longer return she gave him the dagger. The dagger basically was something akin to a wedding ring in today’s society. That’s why people who know the backstory of this significance sometimes question Ashitaka’s action on giving the dagger to San.

The latter can be found on youtube very easily (unless it changed since last time I watched it; correction, I checked aaaaand guess what, it has been taken out from KZbin, damn...) but it is in the same kind of thematic than Princess Mononoké, human arrogance versus forces of nature somehow and has some badass female characters as well. Lepers were quite common during Middle Ages and everybody was scared to cross path with one of them because it is very contagious during the first stages especially. They were wearing a staff with little ringbells on it to make noise while they were moving so people could run away from them fast enough. Lepers were also kept in "hospitals" away from population, the times when they were in contact with other people was mostly while they were attempting a philgrimage to a Holy place to ask God to cure them or forgive their sins before they died.

And they ended up saving the world in the end. It’s my favorite movie and I watched it 100 or 1,000 times. And the white little guys are called Kodamas, and kodamas are little sprits who lives in the forest and they are for good luck, and that thing that you saw in that glow was the Forest spirit the deer god who gives and takes life’s away. And for San the wolf girl San’s goal was to try and kill lady Eboshi the leader of iron town and in the end Eboshi tries to kill and take out the forest spirit and the deer turns into a headless monster and the princess is the wolf girl.

The sub that Lady Eboshi says"ruling the world" looks so wrong to me a native Japanese. She actually says "disrupting the realm". The Japanese word 国崩し is not common, and it sounds to most of Japanese people like "destroying the regime" or "leveling the country." More than three-quarters of Japanese national land is dominated by mountains and you have to blow up and level them to cultivate and also she is in fact trying to take power in the political conflict in which time the Imperial regime was loosing its power.

No. Mono = something unknow, but obscure for sure. No is the verbal particle of posses or specification, like the Saxon Genitive. Ke menas young/adolescent lady. So "Mononoke" means: The Girls of the Spirit/Phantoms. And she is the appellative of San, that is so called by the inhabitants of the city of Lady Eboshi. "Monogatari" is the Japanese word for "Story/Tale/Traditional Tale", so that's the reason, maybe, why you get confused.
