Hi Sarah. I’m not sure what kind of ornaments you’re looking for. These salt dough ornaments can be made to look like cookies. Also, I have a video on using air dry clay to make ornaments.

Many years ago my home demonstration taught a group to make this. I made a fruit tree. I didn’t have a mold or cookie cutter. She said talk to the dough as you mold with hands. We melted crayons in soup cans and dipped the fruit in the melted crayons. For my peach i used 2 colors and carefully dipped to make a pink peachy color after i made the peach shape.

How fun! I like to use it like clay to mold different shapes too. Isn’t it nice how you carry these memories with you for years to come? My boys and I are going to make more in the coming weeks. Thanks for sharing your story, Rose! -Crissy

If you wanted to color the dough before baking the shapes ( brown for a gingerman, or green for trees) , what would everyone recommend to put into the dough to color it?

You can use food coloring for this. Try adding it to the water before adding it to the dough. You can also add more to the dough later if needed. Also, here’s another version with cinnamon if you want a slightly brown color and fragrance: www.firstdayofhome.com/cinnamon-salt-dough-recipe/

Does baking them make them come out better in anyway or is there no difference between that and air drying?
@FirstDayofHome

There shouldn’t be a difference, but I always opt to bake them just to speed up the process. I suppose there’s a risk they might brown a little if you bake them too long or too high a temp.

If you don’t plan to keep these for a long time, you could use royal icing. However, I would not use a sugar based ingredient and store these afterwards. Puff paint might be a good alternative and could look like icing.

Thank you! Can you please tell me what to do if my dough is too sticky, l use bake paper and l cant take iz off because its too sticky, and if l left them on baking paper it had wavy texture and after baking and standing at the air for days its still like "raw" inside. Its not hard enough from inside, l can feel that. Can you please tell me what to do to make a lot of already made dough usable. Thanks.
@FirstDayofHome
@FirstDayofHome 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ivana. If the dough is too sticky, try adding more flour. In different locations, sometimes humidity (or lack of humidity) can make the dough stickier or drier. Usually adding more flour helps with stickiness.

Has anyone added essential oils to the dough to make them scented? Did it work?
@FirstDayofHome
@FirstDayofHome 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question. I haven’t tried it personally yet, but I do plan to do that with some Christmas scents. You can try adding a few drops to the mixture as you’re blending it, or you can just add a few drops after drying the ornaments. Friends have done it both ways with plaster, so I think it would work well with salt dough too. Have fun!

I made these today but I needed 1 cup more of Water. Do you know why?
@FirstDayofHome
@FirstDayofHome 11 ай бұрын
Hi Jenny. There could be a number of reasons from the type of flour you used and the type of salt to the humidity (or lack of humidity) in the air. I recommend all purpose flour and regular table salt.

Are the ornaments supposed to get hard so you can decorate them? Mine stay soft and fall apart when I tried to paint them.
@FirstDayofHome
@FirstDayofHome 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, they should harden either in the oven or by air over several days. You may need to add less water, or try adding a bit more flour if the dough if very sticky.

I was wondering if you were to use the same recipe to make Cinnamon Salt Dough how much would we have to add of cinnamon to your recipe. Thank you and have a nice day.
@FirstDayofHome
@FirstDayofHome 2 жыл бұрын
I would add 1-2 tablespoons of cinnamon to this recipe in that case. You can decide how much color feels right for you. Everything else should be about the same. Best of luck!

I wanted to ask one qs...actually we don't have an oven...can i use baati cooker for it? And for how much time I'll have to bake it? Pls tell as baati cooker is used for same purpose in Delhi, India
@FirstDayofHome
@FirstDayofHome 3 жыл бұрын
I’m not familiar with a baati cooker, but with an oven you would bake them at a very low heat (250 Fahrenheit) for about 2 hours. It depends on how thick the ornaments are. You always have the option of letting the ornaments air dry, which can take 4-5 days usually.

How long did you let the paint dry, and what type of paint did you use? That can happen sometimes with chalk paint or paint that isn’t fully dried.

Can you put a picture on it
@FirstDayofHome
@FirstDayofHome 11 ай бұрын
Yes! After drying, you can apply one layer of Mod Podge, let it dry, then print out a picture the size you want. Apply another layer of Mod Podge on the ornament once the first layer dries and place your printed picture on top. Make sure you have punched a hole in the picture as well to line up with the ornament. Then apply one more thin layer of Mod Podge over the picture. If you want to use an actual photo, I’d just glue it on with hot glue or foam tape but not use Mod Podge.
