Thank your for the clear tutorial ! please correct me if i'm wrong. when you say [05:30] : when i draw Alpha, it (OH) goes down, and Beta, it goes Up. this work only for D-glucose, for L-glucose it's the opposite. the position of your OH on the first carbon depends on the position of the carbon 5. if you want an alpha, then put your carbon's 1 OH at the same side of the carbon's 5 OH if you want a Beta, then put your carbon's 1's OH at the opposite side of the carbon's 5 OH

Is it safe to say that if it's a D-sugar, the CH2OH group points up and if it's a L-sugar, it points down?
@NishantGogna7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's what I gathered too.
@dpsthastha22427 жыл бұрын
agent475816 hmm D&L configuration is based on the postion of C-5 ( -OH )... if OH if right it called D form and if OH is left it is called L form...but alpha and beta configuration is based on the postion of C1 with respect to postion of C6 in cyclic structure..if c1&c6 OH are in same side it is call beta form and c1 &c6 OH are in different side it is called alpha form
@agent4758167 жыл бұрын
Yea, but I'm saying in the ring form, if the CH2OH group is pointing up, it's always a D-sugar and if it's down, it's a L-sugar. It doesn't matter whether it's alpha or beta.
@lenaalsaleem37697 жыл бұрын
Hmmm it's easier to determine the CH2OH whether it's up or down depending on the D and L configuration. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Thanks for mentioning that, I will depend on it. I see it's right.
@Leah4sciMCAT11 ай бұрын
That is correct!
@roadallowance6 жыл бұрын
The definition of an alpha anomer is that in the Fisher projection the OH at C1 is on the same side as the OH that defines the structure as D or L. The beta anomer is the opposite - in any sugar. This is when the ring is drawn to continue to the backbone up from C1. Also, the name Haworth is pronounced with a short a sound (not Hayworth).

This was so helpful! One question: If the carbons are numbered by priority for the D glucose molecule, how come for the D furanose carbon 2 is doubled bonded to an oxygen? Wouldn't that be highest priority?
@Leah4sciMCAT8 ай бұрын
The chain is numbered from the direction of the carbonyl, however the end of the chain still gets a number 1 making the carbonyl the lowest possible number on the chain (in this case #2 rather than #5)

How to recognize if a compound is D or L by looking at the Haworth projection?
@lenaalsaleem37697 жыл бұрын
abhijeet baliga If the CH2OH is up then it's a D-sugar, if it's down it will be a L-sugar. But most sugars in nature are D-sugars.
@progress360infra57 жыл бұрын
thanks to both of you
@alaataha15586 жыл бұрын
Note that when when assigning alpha or beta it dependent on the CH2OH too, meaning if the hydroxyl on the anomeric carbon points in the same direction as the CH2OH its a beta (since most sugars are D we kind off generalize and say up is beta but just watch out for that.)
@Leah4sciMCAT11 ай бұрын
Take a look at what happens to that specific carbon and OH group when converting from Fischer to a ring. Notice that on D the CH2OH points up, while on L it points down

Hi Leah ! In the last example is it alpha or beta and how do you determine that?
@Leah4sciMCAT4 жыл бұрын
Great question! In the last example, the groups coming off of carbon 2 are drawn with “squiggly” lines because the direction in which they point determines whether it is an alpha or beta position. If the OH group has a downwards projection, it is defined as alpha. If the OH group has an upwards projection, it is defined as beta.
