3:41, that's just Microsoft Word's standard ligature mode - fi, ffi, ae and oe amongst others will be automatically joined like that - it's not a correction.
@eifbkcn
@eifbkcn 4 жыл бұрын
It's a bit more complicated than that. Some typefaces have certain combination that they will put into ligatures, often things like fi and ffi; this is a typeface setting, and these letters are still seperate entities. There is a second formal set of ligature characters scattered throughout Unicode, the English set is U+FB00 to U+FB06. This includes fi and ffi as single characters, as well as ff, fl, ffl, ſt and st. These seven characters exist in any typeface, because they are themselves characters, rather than a typeface display option. Æ, æ, Œ and œ also belong to the latter class, except they aren't simply ligatures. They are letters themselves in other languages. Even though you might sometimes see usage in english (í.e. archæology or œconomic) these are certain words where these letters can be used, mainly a remnent from older forms of english, as well as loan words from other languages. They are not just two letters that you can combine when you feel like it.

Ah, did not know that, but it raises the question... what software are they using that supports ligatures, but still yields such atrocious results generally?
@eifbkcn
@eifbkcn 4 жыл бұрын
@@AtomicShrimp it is probably just the font they are using that supports that ligature. You would have to figure out the font to know for sure, but I doubt they know enough about typography and care enough to use the actual ligature character

@GwyndolinOwO

i think that's kinda tricky, but i can't imagine they'd do something new if this wasn't working. they might have to do it all day to get one or two people- but they are still asking for like 500 dollars. think of it this way- the people who would honestly believe they are getting the money are most likely ALSO the same type of person to send 200-500 dollars to a random person. They just have way too much trust in things i think. plus no one is going to spend 500 dollars to get 1000 dollars, the huge amount helps the victim feel like what they are about to spend is chump change

6:40 On the topic of protecting emails, I thought you would've brought this up but here's a third reason: People automatically assume the domain/email is directly from a scammer, even if it doesn't happen too often, websites/email services get hacked and abused meaning even legitimate sites can occasionally send out dodgy emails or malware, so although they should do a better job securing their server it's not exactly fair to them if a bunch of vigilantes out for justice also start attacking them while trying to fix it.
@AtomicShrimp
@AtomicShrimp 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, in fact the 'from' address in the initial email is nearly always spoofed (only when I click reply do I actually get the scammer's real address) - so if I were to reveal that initial email address, I could be making trouble for completely innocent parties - and you can bet KZbin would descend on me pretty hard for that, if one of them complained.

Fun Fact: The weird "i" at 3:40 is not a real error, in some fonts, when you type a lowercase f followed by a lowercase i, it will be connected, because otherwise the dot on the i would collide with the f. That's called a ligature. In a title like that, it should still be avoided though.

Scammers drop people who are too canny in their questions. Sure, it's perhaps mildly satisfying in the short term to catch them out in their obvious lies, but the goal is not to prove them to be scammers. You already know for a fact they are scammers, and so do they. No, you need to appear simple, naive, trusting, greedy, or desperate enough that they think they've hooked you, and find ways to draw out the conversation. You want to force them to break the script and put real time and effort into stringing you along. They have to believe you believe them, so they are willing to waste their time on the dead end. Fun fact, you can even train those scammers to be more impatient and obvious with people who are genuinely vulnerable to scams, just by infuriating them with your endless questions, inquiries, incidents, awkwardness, and money teasing; which will reduce the number of people who get actually get caught up in a scam.

I’m bingeing on Atomic Shrimp scambaiting videos this morning and I want to mention how enjoyable it is to watch the evolution of your craft, both the scambaits and the making of videos. You’re really good at this and while I appreciate your humility, we should all acknowledge that we’re getting a hell of a product from you! And free! Thanks for your tenacity with these scumbags, and frankly, for humanizing them to the extent possible. It’s a nice change from the conversations with Indian SSA scammers that predictably end in cursing (which is fun, but so predictable). Your ability to take the material they give you and create a bigger story around it is really amazing. You ought to be writing plays, movies or television. But that would steal time from these videos, so carry on!

Over here in Australia there's been a huge uptake lately of scammers using autocaller machines to mark their database of active 'answered' numbers to try scamming later on.. I had quite a chuckle today when I decided to loop a segment of Justin Bieber's "baby baby baby" song, 1 hour long, on an audio player for 'on hold' music, which I now use just after I tell whichever scammer happens to try it on that day "oh, I'll have to put you on hold for a moment while I find my banking details"... They get so pissed off, lol, I love it, I actually look forward to messing with them now :D

Very entertaining video once again. This was exactly what i needed today, some scambaiting, with that unique Atomic Shrimp humor. I think i might have an idea for a future scam baiting session (apologies, if someone already suggested this). When you've got one on the hook with peticularly outragous grammar and typing, point out all the mistakes to him, and refuse to proceed until he send a corrected eMail. Thats garuanteed to make them frustrated or angry.

Interestingly, Mexico City [the capital of Mexico, the country] was called the Federal District [Distrito Federal] until a few years ago, which I think the death certificate is *trying* to refer to. San Luis Potosí is a state within Mexico, and it's also the name of the capital city of that state, but San Luis Potosí and Mexico City are around 400km apart. Mr. Saba's death gets more intriguing by the minute...
