One of the reasons I love this channel, Matts letting the pregnant females go to ensure more Ling get born. Been watching a bunch of other Bay Area fishing KZbin channels and they're taking pregnant females, when they gut the Ling you can see the roe being treated as byproduct. Happy New Year Matts!
@nintendude19882 жыл бұрын
That sounds logical to most people at first, but it is actually far more detrimental to future populations take males out than females. Females will lay once, thousands of eggs, But the males fertilize multiple times, multiple thousands, instead of just once. And it is the males that guard the nests, you take the male out of the picture and some females may not get fertilized, and once they lay the eggs there is nothing to guard the nest. Leaving those eggs (and future populations) wide open to being eaten by anything that swims or crawls by. This is why most regulations do not limit what sex can be taken. Populations are well enough that they do not have to be picky ;)
@chinaskibukowski77472 жыл бұрын
@@nintendude1988 It doesn't just sound logical. It IS logical. Perhaps you're a younger fisherman but I remember a time when Ling numbers were so low because of severe over fishing. Preservation of a species is directly tied to ensuring there are healthy females capable of producing eggs. It takes female Ling a longer period to reach sexual maturation vs. their male counterparts. This means younger male Lings are ready to partake is reproduction faster than female Lings. In addition to reaching sexual maturity in a shorter duration male Lings are higher in numbers vs. female Ling. So, the idea that taking a female ling is preferable to taking a male Ling is rather uninformed.
@nintendude19882 жыл бұрын
@@chinaskibukowski7747 I fished all through the ling closure of the early 2000s, I remember it well. But it's been proven plenty of times here in Oregon that the over harvest of males directly related to the decline last time. It was because people targeted males specifically thinking it was better than targeting females that lead to overfishing of them and the decline in population. Females and Males mature virtually around the same time (only a year difference and 4" difference) so that argument doesn't make much sense. If it was important to leave the females be there would be a slot limit ensuring people would not keep the big females.
@uddyfang80062 жыл бұрын
Keeping either sex of lingcod during mating season should probably be avoided. The Male lingcod guards the eggs, and if they are removed from their nest the entire batch of eggs will not survive. Females leave the spawning site immediately after spawning, so if you did catch a ling full of eggs it most likely hasn't had the chance to spawn, also bad. It would be best to target other species during the breeding periods or females that have laid their eggs. I think that's Matt's reasoning for letting the lingcod go, it hadn't laid its eggs yet.

On the east coast for blue crab, I do salted chicken halves(just pack them in Kosher salt for like a week), with a can of tuna with some holes poked in the can. Let them soak for 5 or 6 hours and usually end up getting my individual limit after 2-3 pulls. The traps are full enclosed traps, and I need like 10-20lbs or weight depending on the current.

The “crab butter” referred to is the yellow-white-greenish substance that is revealed after the large shell has been removed. This is actually a digestive gland known as the hepatopancreas, an equivalent to our liver and pancreas. It can be high in Domoic acid, which is a potent neurotoxin called Amnesic Shellfish Poison (ASP). The "butter" can also contain a lot of other toxins, such as mercury.

Losing a drone in Bay, almost drowing first time abolone diving and my favorite his self inflating life vest going off while launching his kayak in chest deep water.
