In 2022, 3 buddies and I headed into one of our favorite spots in the BWCA - Malberg Lake. Malberg is an exceptional place for a lot of reasons, but what has drawn us back here for the 5th time is access to great fishing. Don’t get me wrong, I could hang out here for weeks without a fishing pole and never grow tired of the surroundings, but there is something special about the tug of a fish on your line in the remote wilderness that’s hard to explain unless you’ve been there and experienced it.
Malberg is located centrally in the Eastern BWCA and has a variety of good fishing options with great access to nearby lakes that really boost your chances throughout the seasons. Our main goal on this trip (and most trips for that matter) were the walleye due to its abundance and great table fare. Find the eye’s and generally the other species will follow, even when not being targeted. This particular trip had some of the best fishing I have ever experienced anywhere . Variety, quantity and quality were consistent for the entire trip as Malberg again did not disappoint. The biggest walleye I have ever seen is on this video along with a mix of big northern, sunnies and smallies
Join us as we head deep into Minnesota’s wilderness to do some fishing in the BWCA!

Another great video of your trip. I personally am very grateful for you taking the time to put out this level of content. Anybody who has paddled the deep north knows just how it feels to be there and we can get a bit of that feeling again with your trips. Thank You.

Fantastic production and footage--thanks for all your efforts. When I trip to northern MInnesota, I'm a Gunflint Trail guy, fishing out of a boat. But I get to bring my family, and I love it up there. Wish I had discovered the boundary waters when I was younger. What a treasure it is. Thanks again!

@@AnglingUploaded I have also been into the Malberg area many times. Last year, I never got beyond Polly in early July. Was trolling and planned to hit Malberg on Day 1, but I caught so many walleye in Polly that I ended up staying there the entire time. It was a short trip geared to get me used to a new solo canoe, and I was shocked that no one else was on Polly.

Really enjoyed this and your Knife Lake video. A buddy and I have made a handful of trips to the Bdub and although we enjoy fishing, especially for walleye, we've never had real great success - so needless to say I'm a bit envious. We're planning a mid September trip in '23, possibly to Knife. Hoping our luck changes, but if not, that's fine because even with bad fishing you can't beat the BWCA.

Great vid. Funny thing and small world. I was camped one lake over on Kivaniva on those same dates y’all were there on Malberg. 😉 Unfortunately I didn’t come upon any walleye in the Kawishiwi when I made the trip over there. I did catch a real fat smallie and a few pike.

@@AnglingUploaded LOL! I only heard people one day. It was Saturday evening. Sounded like they were on Kawishiwi and paddling away. It was a nice camp spot for sure. Especially for a solo paddler and first time in the BWCA. Just wish I hadn’t packed too much. My goal was to paddle over into Alice and up through Gabimichigami, back out through my entry back at Tuscarora. Unfortunately I packed to heavy and the portages sucked my energy levels so I laid up a few days back there on Kivaniva. It was awesome.

Awesome video ! How did you keep your leeches alive and transport them ? You think that same pattern would extend into June ?
@AnglingUploaded
@AnglingUploaded 11 ай бұрын
Hey Mitch. Leeches are surprisingly tough and the perfect bait. We bring frozen steaks for day 1. Then pack the leeches near it to keep cool (5lbs worth!). When we arrive we switch to a leech locker that stays in the lake. They do fine in the boat all day in powdered gatorade containers. This will generally work all June but depends on water levels and temps. Late June they will move back and be more reef orientated if it's getting hot.

Great video! It's been too long for me. I'm approaching retirement and am planning a trip back to both the BWCA and The Quetico. What type of GoPro mount was that. A Ramp mount? Also, what was the power cord? Thank You Brian
@AnglingUploaded
@AnglingUploaded Жыл бұрын
Yep a Ram mount. A bit heavy but still my best option. I bring a small clamp for backup. My galaxy phone and a gopro 8 do all of the work. Have the directional mic attachment on the gopro. Backup battery is on the Ram with velcro. Usb c powers it. Always looking to get lighter. Batteries are most of my filming weight.

Tips for holding the canoe in current? Anchor or rope tied to something or just sitting in slack water? Looks like you have it mastered.

@AnglingUploaded Жыл бұрын
Hey Kevin! We always have 2 rock anchors to be steady. Canoe stability is amazing when locked in current. point upstream and drop both anchors. We had the luxury of dropping an anchor over some big tree lay downs on fishdance to keep it stable. A big key to enticing eyes.

Howdy! I swear by a Fishtrax Hawkeye. 8 aaa lithium (lighter) batteries work for the whole week. (I turn off the color to save power). Don't really use it to mark fish, just bottom content. It has a tripod mount on the bottom and a suction cup transducer. Any type of camera clamp that will grab a gunnel will hold it perfectly in front of you.
