love the fly videos. Smallmouth fights on the fly are some of the best fishing experiences you can have. Sure getting smallies on normal tackle is fun, but it does not compare to the fight on a fly rod. Completely changes the experience. Would love to see you go for Steelhead when they are running! Edit: btw bringing a small net is a hugeeee help on the fly. Whenever I forget my net, fish will come off at my feet all the time.

NOTHING feels better than catching anything on a fly rod. Just started and caught a 6lb bass on the flyrod and it was insane. Way better than a baitcaster or spinning reel.

6 years ago i stumbled upon Jons channel, and it’s been so long that i barely fish anymore. And somehow he has the power to make his videos not just about fishing, he’s able to connect through the camera which is something that is hard to find for fishing channels. Keep fishing, never stop

I urge you to check out Brian Latimer's Straight Up Fishing show on Waypoint TV either via your local cable subscription or on their site. IT'S FREE and is such a feel good experience like Jon's content. And Brian is the same guy in person as he is behind the camera which makes it even better.

Love seeing you back on the fly Jon! Couple of tips for you? 1 - Invest in a coil tray or line tray, especially if you're wading? It's a curved tray that fastens around your waist. What it allows you to do is strip line into it when you're wading so that your line isn't in the water and flowing around your feet? It's easier to play them off the reel using line tension, as you're not worried all the time of a big run and getting tangled up. 2 - When retrieving, I've noticed you use just a basic single pull retrieve? It can make your fly presentation too jerky and unnatural in attracting some wary fish (especially Trout)? If you want a slow continual "swim", especially with a minnow or bait fish pattern fly, try a slow figure 8 in to hand, loop retrieve? If you get it right then you can maintain a constant speed with your lure, then you can also add the odd twitch on the line or two as it's gathered in your off hand? When your hand is full, you can dump the line while still retrieving? Like into a line tray, or the bottom of a john boat...? You can also vary the speed so if you get really good at it, you can do a really fast constant retrieve. The other advantage is that if you see other fish moving in the same area you've just retrieved from, then you can get out to the exact same spot faster, as you're not having to retrieve line from water, which creates drag slowing you down, plus it creates a hell of a noise and vibration through the water. It also means that you're in constant connection with the fly and can lift into a strike better. If you're doing short single pulls to retrieve, then you get a snaking or zig zagging which has dead space in it (15m 35 -> 15m 40 in your video), so that when you strike, you're actually taking up a lot of slack from the line before you set the hook. This can account for a late strike that "looked" on time and good, but was only tightening up on excess line. Might explain some of the "misses" you've had in the past? BTW - when was the last time you stripped the main line off that reel and de-memoried it? It will help get some of the semi-circular looping you see when your line hits the water and puts a bit of life back into the line. You can also get some that helps repair the microscopic cracks you get in fly lines from being constantly wound and stored on the reel. Because of the material it is made of, it doesn't do it much good being sat on it for long lengths of time. Hope this helps somewhat? Tight lines!

never ceases to amaze me how you came from the suburbs of Chicago and fish like you do in Texasor over seas and especially these wilderness waters of Maine; never afraid of falling, or getting soaked or bruised or cut. Stretching your skills in the wilderness from casting to ocean spinners, now wet fly and dry fly fishing. You definitely are that quintessential example the mantra, KFNS. proud watching you. I am sure your wife and baby girl are too.

Try getting those bigger smallies on the reel and let the drag do the work! Your finger on the line is much less sensitive than the drag on the reel. Helpful to not lose as many fish from too much tension on the line

I was hopping that you would try a popper or a terrestrial atractor pattern to see a smallie explote on the surface , specially with those perfect conditions, low and clear water, I think they woud be as effective as those clousers, but , dude, It was awesome!! keep up the great job !!! When I was first getting into fly fishing, I bought a wind river combo from cabelas. It was a 9ft 5wt rod, I bought it in the fall during the salmon run in Michigan. Took it to river and landed multiple salmon on it, some pushing 25lbs. It was crazy, since I've upgraded my rod and now using a 10wt for the salmon.

A tip from experience is Win a fish gets interested in your fly Don’t very your strip keep doing the same stripping method that got him interested. if that doesn’t work, and he’s just slowly following it, kill the fly completely let it stop and sit there for a couple seconds then continue that strip

There's some really good fishing opportunities in New Brunswick while you're chasing atlantic sturgeon. Striped bass, muskie, smallmouth, atlantic salmon, shortnose sturgeon. You'll be able to chase all these on the SJR and it's tributaries since you're after atlantic sturgeon. Most of it is tidal so you don't need a fishing license either.
