I used to be in the business of writing custom software for businesses, and it was common to have an escrow set up so that if the software vendor went out of business or otherwise disappeared, the source code would be released to the company who hired the software to be written. I can't understand why something similar isn't required for these new "computer essential" cars.
@acx20353 ай бұрын
The issue with that could be the legality of who owns the software. Most auto makers don't make a lot of the computers and especially the code on them. So, when they buy the modules to produce the cars, one could assume they get a license to use the software but don't have the ownership to fully release it. You would most likely need the parent company like Bosch to authorize it, which won't happen.
@ThomasWilliams-ee6li3 ай бұрын
This is very dangerous because of malicious bugs that could be added. There really needs to be a reputable organization that maintains the code.
@ldnwholesale85523 ай бұрын
That will not happen. Bankrupt companies and their recievers have good money tied up in software. They may sell it. If they cannot they will not give it out free. Sorry you lose!

@nevco87743 ай бұрын
However, ever crownvic has old computer modules. Only cars built before 1988 are free of computer modules. Yes, those modules are not connected to internet. But they degrade needing replacement. At certain point when will be none of those modules, nobody will support them. Keeping up old devices, cars is not so easy, rosy as it seems, especially in the long run.
@gavriushka3 ай бұрын
@@nevco8774 one thing you’re not understanding, business works out of demand. If there is demand, there’s business, there’s money to be made. Same here, if enough people say duck this modern crap, keep buying these parts, there will be places that make them, whether that’s the manufacturer or aftermarket. Also, go buy a crap ton do them now while cheap and available, and put them in a box in your storage and you’re golden. One of those computers will cost you a tenth, if not less than a single sensor on most modern cars. I had a dead radio control module on my 22 Ram 1500 Laramie. It was replaced under warranty, but if I didn’t have it, the module was over 2K. A radio module for 2K. And the wait time to get it for the dealer was over a month. Good luck to you getting it yourself now. My radio died once in the crown Vic. Wanna guess how much it cost me to replace it? However much a new radio costs at any store. You can get a $20 one, or a thousand bucks one. Guess what, you can’t replace the radio in a Tesla. Nor a modern Ram 1500, or F150. So yeah.. your point isn’t exactly valid here.

Bit by bit, Big Business is trying to move us away from the concept of physical ownership of their product to a model where you're purchasing a _license_ to use the product, but the manufacturer maintains ownership of the physical product.
@clinttube3 ай бұрын
100%. Subscription businesses get higher valuations due to recurring revenue. Even if it's lower revenue, the fact it's recurring usually makes up for that. Worse product, less sales, still more money for the owners. The thing is, they kind of have best of both worlds because they have you by the balls despite you "owning" the car now, if anything does not run without talking to the cloud (even every X days), you MUST stay connected in some way. This is increasingly ubiquitous in software and can't imagine all automakers are far behind. But if tech/modules break because of a software update down the road, well, you are the owner so tough luck. Once the car is running well and bugs are fixed (hopefully under warranty), turn off updates so things won't get bricked over time like with iPhones. Problem is they'll surely make it so service becomes impossible because firmware doesn't match current spec and so artificially the diagnostics won't work. It's truly criminal how for a 7 year old car the identical module with identical software doesn't work because there is a fake gate created called "programming" where it's simply not doing anything proprietary. I understand why the traction control logic itself shouldn't be opened up necessarily - that's proprietary. But it's absolute BS that the identical module with identical software being replaced in a car can't be used solely because of proprietary methods of marrying it to a VIN. Seems very anti-trust-y to me.

Biggest gripe? Fuggin radio has to be booted up every god damned time you get in the car even if you just pop into a grocery store for 10 minutes. Once you FOB lock the car, its like the morning startup all over again. Why cant the stupid thing just go back to previous channel/playlist when you start up???😡 Oh, and TomTom sucks ass as a nav system. I have a W205 Mercedes AMG with the Active LED headlights. Well one of my headlights died because of a fatal flow in all LED headlights today and that is condensation buildup. This condensation eventually destroyed to main LED module. From Mercedes Dealership you can only purchase the full headlamp and in Canada that is $2850. If you have a Mercedes Service Center, you can purchase the module alone however only Mercedes can program the module, though you can find the module online for less that what Mercedes sells it for. The module cost $630, plus labour and programming, the total cost to get my headlights to work was $1500 which is I could have done it myself, would have cost $400.

I heard there was a company license-building Volvo 240s, but not sure where or if they're still around. April hit the nail on the head when she mentioned the government controlling our cars. A BIG roadblock to building new old cars IS the government. New cars have to meet tougher emissions standards. They have to meet updated safety regulations (like side impact airbags after 2010) so that would limit any attempt at making new old cars to 1500 units or less per year to satisfy the requirements for "low volume production" exemption. I wonder if the same company could make 1500 Crown Vics, 1500 Volvo 240s, 1500 Toyota pickups from the early 90s, 1500 Nissan Hardbodys, etc. I imagine the auto manufacturers would not willingly (or cheaply) issue a license for another company to build their obsolete cars. You'd almost have to do it with a defunct in the US brand, such as Isuzu or Suzuki. New 1991 Suzuki Sidekicks and Isuzu Troopers would probably be a hit.

American leasing is a taxi and limousine commission (TLC) specific car leasing company that leases to Uber and Lyft drivers. They will most likely be transitioning all of their fleet to these instead of Camry’s and Highlanders and Tesla’s. It’s actually a really good buy for them because normally they have to buy cars at full market value, with a slight discount obv, dr. so what they will have to spend to set up their own support network for these cars will still be a massive savings for them overtime.
