The Type R and the SI are both similar platforms that often come up neck and neck on debates amongst enthusiasts alike. These two get enough mentioning that we figured why not make a video all about these two and help you decide whether one is "better" than the other. Let's compare and contrast these two cars and see which one is ultimately worth it.

I jumped into my Type R last October. The wild styling, performance goodies, interior and after market support were all big selling points. The power and performance from factory were no brainers. Lastly, I also realized I was purchasing into a legacy car. The badge has a history and the time it set at the Burg was mind blowing. I love being an owner of the Honda heritage that is the Type R. I don't think I could buy anything less from Honda ever again.

Have a 2018 si. The mpg and price point are what sold me. If I had the dough and didn't have a long commute to work I would love a type r. Some people think 10th gen styling is gaudy but I love it. The rear is a bit busy but the front end is the best looking of any civic for me.

I'm a little bit late here but I had a 18' SI before I got my 21' R and yeah the difference is worth it. Ignoring power the type R handles way better and has a unique suspension setup that you can't (at least for now) affordably replicate on the SI like you could before, it's no longer as simple as bolting type r parts on your lower trim. Plus like someone else said the fact that you have a type r will always put a smile on your face. Only downside is people ALWAYS want to race.

Type R owner here, who has also spent considerable time in both 6mt 2.0t accords and 10th gen SIs. Yes, the type R is worth it. It's oddly more practical than a SI being a hatchback and all, you get plenty of room inside, its comfortable for long road trips (I've done 18+ hours each way in mine). Mine has been super reliable, unlike SIs can be when you start to modify them to make power, and my FBO tuned 450+ whp baby will even give me 33 mpg on the highway. If everyone were honest, the ONLY reason you wouldn't get one is because of the price, and MAYBE the hotwheel like styling *which everyone who sees it nesr me seems to love!*. Once you get to really drive a R, you can't go back. But if you haven't been able to, you can't imagine why someone would pay for one and you'll swear they aren't worth it, and what you have now is good enough.

Back in the day, I used to own a first-gen Honda CRX. Even though it was a base trim, I loved that car. It was a sad day when I had to let that car go because I did not have the money to fix it and bring out its full potential. Years later I now own an FK8 Honda Civic Type R and the car drives like a dream. I look for excuses to drive it and even with today's insane gas prices, the car gets incredible MPGs when you consider its performance. Every time I drive it I know it is something special. I absolutely love the aggressive styling and the car puts a smile on my face every time I look at it. I was able to get this car at MSRP and never plan on selling it but it does not hurt that the car is worth more money now than when I bought it. I truly believe the FK8 is a future collectible that will only be more sought after as time goes on.

@TdaKid
@TdaKid 2 жыл бұрын
Both cars are amazing for what they do. Both literally do everything you need for your everyday practicality. I chose the Si over the R mainly for 2 factors. 1. The mpg. We get up to 38mpg on the si considering I was doing a lot of highway driving. About 150 x 5 miles for work a week. 2. The price, I can never see myself overpaying for any car in general. When I was in the market all the R’s were 50k new in SoCal and used were around $42k. If I had looked a few month prior the spike then I probably would have gotten the R. Would I get one now?? That depends on the market. If the price is right then yes it is definitely worth it. If you don’t care for all the “track oriented” components from the R, then the si is a good choice too.

I was really close on getting a FK8 TYPE R, but rain and winter was a huge factor in the NW state I live in (note I came from a 350Z driving all winter hills). AWD and SUV was a huge upgrade demand for me when I tested out the Acura MDX, BMW X5 and Mercedes ML. Ultimately, I ditched everything midsize and smaller and went to the Mercedes GLS. But no doubt, when I tested the FK8, I can see it can be a perfect car that can carry things while having good power all around.

If i spent the money on the type r I wouldnt have the coupe that I wanted and wouldnt have money for extra mods. I went with a Coupe Si. The money i saved i was able to get a Built block, drop in turbo, down pipe and front pipe, intake, exhaust, intercooler and piping, turbo inlet, hks blow off valve, and injectors for performance, car currently makes about 300whp I also have the car slammed on coilovers, have 3 piece wheels, aftermarket wing, type R front bumper, Abs dynamics front splitter and side skirt extensions. a custom rear diffuser and tint, also got all my chrome painted black. I was able to make the car compete if not beat a type r in a race and was really able to make the car my own and have fun with the money I saved. Wont hold value like the type r but i built the car for me and dont plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. If money meant nothing I wouldve obviously gotten the type r though.

I’ve drove it throughout the winter and it wasn’t bad at all (as long as you have winter tires). I went to 3 fishing trips with it, the hatch is amazing for all my equipment and the gas is pretty good for the performance 6.7L/100km (35mpg) if I drive conservative on the hwy. I’ve driven over 40,000km (25,000mi) within the year, done all maintenance by myself, and it’s super easy to work on if your mechanical incline. As for the price, I paid 35k Canadian. Upgraded from a 2020 Si Coupe to a 2018 Type-R. 100% worth it, they feel like completely different cars. You'll know the moment you drive one. The Type-R feels stiffer in Comfort mode than the Si in Sport mode if that tells you anything. I will say the Si is a great car in it's own right, especially at it's MSRP. The Type-R is just better in every metric but gas mileage. The gap between the two cars is far greater than I expected.

8th gen owner here. I'm biased but this is my favorite SI. Bolt ons and a tuner are great, but to get real numbers from a forced induction kit you'll need some work put into the bottom end and internals. At least for my peace of mind. @@kekistani2373 Thats very true, but you're also talking extra money there on top of the close to $40k to buy the car. That's like saying, why buy a Toyota 86 and turbo it when instead you can buy a supra and turbo that instead. More money get more performance but there is a huge difference between buying a car for $25k and putting a few grand into modding, and buying a car for $38k+ and then modding it. A lot of people can't afford the more expensive one but of course more money give more potential and obviously the type R has higher potential than the SI with its upgraded components and larger engine. It damn well better have more potential lol, that's the entire reason it's more expensive.

As a current Si owner. The type R is easily worth it for me personally. That k20 motor being the biggest reason, the L series engines are too new, not that many super high mileage ones around yet. K series motors have a reputation for being one of Honda's "tank" engines. Another is the wider fenders that come on a type R allowing you to run a 255 tire and up on lowered suspension without rubbing. Which definitely comes in handy on the track when you want more aggressive and grippy tires/wheel set up. I'm also a pretty big Honda fan so just the idea of owning a "type r" is prestigious and privileged for me personally. But i mean if none of these things seem to affect you, definitely stick to the Si

The k20c family of motors are wildly different than the k series motors we've been dealing with for the past 20 years. They share little to no parts and the architecture isn't even that similar, so the "tank" reputation doesn't necessarily apply to the type r motor (yet)
