Fitting a DCC Decoder to Older DC Trains

This video shows how it is possible to fit a DCC Decoder to an older, DC Train.
Most older style DC locos can be easily converted to run on your DCC layout. Just make sure that it already runs will on DC, as converting it to DCC won't make it run any better!
Disclaimer, the conversion shown in this video is just for this motor/chassis combination. Its important to ensure that the motor is isolated from the power. Some locos have a constant feed through the wheels and chassis that can't be interrupted without slight modifications. Not isolating the motor can result in damage (terminal) to your decoder.

Update time. I finally attempted this. There was a small issue, my 06 was wired up a little differently. There were wires from the pickups to the motor. After taking a deep breath, I cut the wires, unsoldered the capacitors and wires from the motor and went for it. For the results, see the attached video. Thanks for the video. I got one of these too, in blue BR livery, and was planning to fit it with a decoder. My suggestion to handle the wheelslipping: make the thing a lot heavier. I'll try it on mine and let you know how I solved the problem. Or maybe you already found a solution? And by the way, thanks also for the other vidéo, I really enjoyed the eBay rescue series !

Thank you. Let me know how the extra weight goes. I’m going to try Bullfrog Snot which it a paint on traction tyre sort of thing. I’ve seen it used a few times. I’ll post a video when I’ve tried it.

@@BuntersYard Hi there. I just took a look at my own Class06. I see there is a lot of free (lost) space in front of the motor, as well as above the motor in the elevated part (fuel tank?). I shall also consider putting some weight on the floor of the cabin, which is invisible anyway. I'll have to wait to start working, no decoders left but I'm about to order new ones. Best regards.
