Hi Marilyn. So many great books here! I recently bought Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered....as a gift for a dear friend. What a fun book. We really are in sync. I am reading that Agatha Christie story collection right now. I've been having such fun reading her lately. I also love Jess Kidd. She was a new find for me last year when my book group read The Night Ship. That got me started on her, and I love her. I think I read Mr. Flood's Last Resort next. She's just delightful. Loved your discussion of Frankenstein. It is looking like this will be the next book that I talk about in my "Books I Loved to Teach" series as it is getting the most votes of the four books that I've posted. This is an excellent video, Marilyn. I love "scary books for chickens." A few more suggestions for you: Dracula, by Bram Stoker, is another scary book for chickens. Not really scary. If you loved Frankenstein, I think you will also like Dracula. Also, my new horror find, thanks to MJ, was T. Kingfisher, A HOUSE WITH GOOD BONES. I really loved that book, and I think you would too. Hope you are feeling well, my friend. Sending love.

@@audreyh7892 hello Audrey, I found Frankenstein very sad and a sad commentary on human beings in general. But there were some beautiful parts too, and the writing was atmospheric and descriptive. Aloha friend.

Hi Marilyn, I enjoy Shirley Jackson stories.I, as a young Nurses Aide(Many years ago) can understand how Eleanor felt in "The Haunting". Taking care of an old, demanding individual can be trying (in her case it was her Mother). I like thriller stories as well as scary stories. I remember reading "In Cold Blood",and "The Boston Strangler" and being so frightened, because they were True stories ! I do like the old Classics such as "Dracula","The Turn Of The Screw", Frankenstein",and "The Picture Of Dorian Gray". Take care of yourself. Happiness, Cindy 🌻

@@cindyurban150 Hi Cindy, I haven’t read Shirley Jackson yet, but several people have recommended her stories. I read in cold blood, and it was wonderfully written and such a sad and terrifying true crime book. I vaguely remember reading the Boston strangler one as well. But if you enjoy true crime, the scariest book, and the one that most affected me was called serpentine by Thomas Thompson. It has been called hypnotic reads like fiction. Baffling. It was written in 79 and I recently bought a copy, but I’m too scared to reread it😀. Aloha friend.

Is the Barbara comyns book by the same publisher as Pym? The covers look like a familiar design. ...Not to be murdered... just went on my list. This was a fun post.

I read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein many, many years ago as a young girl and it was so different from what I expected. I don't remember too much about it other than the scenes of the monster running across the mountains. Her writing painted such a vivid picture in my mind that I can still call up those images. I also wanted to say that I suffer from chronic pain and there's absolutely NO WAY I could walk five miles, no matter how dear the cause would be. I am in awe. When walking, my legs start to hurt after about 25-30 minutes. I'm so proud of you for finishing, but do take care of yourself.

@@juliehughes1258Hello Julie, I was amazed at how The settings were in Frankenstein. The ocean, the mountains, the villages near Zürich Switzerland, where as memorable as the characters. If you do read it again, I do recommend the annotated edition where the author delves deeply into all kinds of interesting tidbits. I also can’t walk 5 miles an even as stubborn as I am, I finally realized Pushing myself through the pain was Doing me more harm than good. I can’t even describe the end of the walk because my whole body was screaming. Thank you so much for your comment. Chronic pain can be such a lonely experience because it’s hard to understand another persons pain. Aloha friend.

As a confirmed chicken, I loved the title of this video! I like suspense stories or thrillers but horror isn't really my genre either. I don't mind a bit of not too scary gothic horror, like Frankenstein or something by Daphne Du Maurier. The book by Maureen Johnson is just coming out here in Australia so I will definitely be treating myself to that one.

@@wendyryan1618 Hi Wendy, I read two books by Daphne DuMaurier, Rebecca and Jamaica Inn. Both were scary, but Jamaica in was scarier. Luckily I read it as a buddy read. I haven’t read my cousin Rachel. Have you read that one? I haven’t heard of Maureen Johnson, So thank you for giving me an Australian suggestion. Aloha friend.

I'm a big chicken too, but I love Frankenstein and Dracula!! Don't ever read Whispers by Koontz - I still have bad dreams about that one. I also just finished my first, and last, Steven King - Gunslinger. It was not scary really, but the writing was angry and filled with contempt towards society. Not my cup of tea at all!! I've heard that T Kingfisher's horror is not very scary, but I've only read A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by her. It was a lovely children's book!! Take care and enjoy your reads!!

Hi BJ, I don't read Steven King either. The only book I read was Dolores Claiborne. But I only read it because I watched the movie with the incomparable Kathy Bates. It's more of a psychological thriller. Aloha friend and fellow chicken.
