You can also find frozen versions of the steamed bao buns at most Asian grocery stores if you’re too lazy to make them from scratch! My family always has them in the freezer.

Another shortcut is frozen white bread dough. Thaw it. Roll it out and proceed. Just check the ingredients.

OMG!!! YOU R MAKING TAIWANESE GUA BAO!!!!! You rock it, Lauren!! We can also find many vegan version of gua bao in Taiwan too. And my favorite is filling the bao with braised dried tofu, some veggies, and ofc PEANUT POWDER and CORIANDER!!! You should really try it out, it's so simple but delicious too. Love from Taiwan

Hi Lauren, in case you don't know, a thin layer of oil on the dough can also prevent the bao to stick together. This is how we make "gua bao"

I've never pickled carrots, but in my experience red onions need to pickle for at least 12 hours. Well, I'm excited to experiment more with pickeling different veggies and I'll definetely try out whether I like the taste of pickled carrots already after one hour like you suggested.

If you can’t eat all the buns at once is it best to steam it all at once or just save the rest of the dough and steam it later?

Rivers Duggan I think steam then cool then freeze. Then defrost when ready. Just make sure it’s super airtight. Maybe take a straw and blow air out of bag. Or just do your best to get air out with hands (I’m a bit paranoid about freezer burn haha 😁).That’s what I do with challah (braided Christmas or Chanukah bread) and they sell Bao in the store frozen. Why not?
